Abolishing the Monarchy

A few people on different sides of the debate have expressed an interest in discussing/debating this, so I thought we could give it a go…

Abolishing the monarchy?

My personal view: I used to be a staunch republican but have since completely changed my view. I think the constitutional monarchy is a slightly odd system, but seems to do the job, and I can’t think of another country’s system which is actually preferable. I also find myself less & less convinced by republican arguments…

Thoughts?

Nothing. Just squirrelling it away to add to the rest of the wealth.

Quite. No wonder they're hiding his will for 90 years.

Isn't the SG touted as covering the costs of the official duties? Why was he getting an allowance on top? And now we're supposed to be grateful because Camilla isn't.

They really do take us for mugs.

Questions for the republican members of the MN RF team:

  • Is there anything KC could do that would change your mind? Eg kicking out a few members, reducing the cost, becoming financially self-reliant, etc?
  • Is there a compromise option that would satisfy you? Or maybe an alternative monarchy in the world that if the UK adopted a similar system you could live with it?

For me on the other “side” I think I could be convinced, one day, maybe, when the Wales kids aren’t cute anymore, and the titans that are Anne and Camilla are no more, but there really isn’t a current republic system in the world I would prefer.

Good questions @tigger2022

Your first point is 'yes'. Because I am realistic and realise they are going nowhere.

Second point. 'Yes'. Don't know which because don't have time to research but the Nordic countries seem to do it better with lots of extended family having jobs and careers

An interesting article

Here's how much Europe's royal families really cost | CNN

Of the 10 main royal families in Europe, nine still receive public funding for carrying out their duties – the only exception being the Princely House of Liechtenstein, which doesn’t get any taxpayer money to cover its expenses.

@Roussette interesting that Spain’s monarchy is relatively so cheap… purely anecdotal but I think they’re the second most internationally well-known RF (I think the secret is being very photogenic!)

I think your suggestions are good, slim it down and become financially self reliant would be a compromise of sorts for me.

LolaSmiles · 22/07/2023 19:59

I'd like a slimmed down monarchy, with them being more self-reliant and with greater transparency on their affairs, especially financial affairs. I'd also like to see an end to laws being drawn that allow the crown estates and royal interests to be exempt from laws that affect the general public.

There's nothing Charles can do to change my mind but there are any number of things he could do to buff his image.
The problem is the events of the past year have proved both that he has no interest whatsoever in even minor changes and that he is hell bent on rooting in the trough as hard as he can.

No, But I wonder what would replace the UK in our national ID.
