Abolishing the Monarchy

tigger2022 · 19/06/2023 14:42

A few people on different sides of the debate have expressed an interest in discussing/debating this, so I thought we could give it a go…

Abolishing the monarchy?

My personal view: I used to be a staunch republican but have since completely changed my view. I think the constitutional monarchy is a slightly odd system, but seems to do the job, and I can’t think of another country’s system which is actually preferable. I also find myself less & less convinced by republican arguments…

Thoughts?

OK. It's propoganda material so you won't even glance at it.

That tells me all I need to know.

It is actually very interesting if you spent the time reading it. And it's facts and figures actually.

You don't need to worry. The Monarchy are going nowhere. Not in my lifetime or my kids' lifetimes. However, that doesn't stop people wanting to discuss them. I want to.

Can I ask you to read this. An interesting read about exactly what royal patronages do for Charities.

You might just change your mind after looking at this research which involved a database with 3 million entries.

Caroline Fiennes says one thing.
David Haigh says the opposite.

You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Yes he does. He hasn't researched to that degree.

Do you have to drill through 3m bits of evidence, though! Don't you get the same info from 1m bits? Or even ½m bits?
It's two people with different experience of working with brands, one with data, one with hands on experience, that have got different feedback from companies/ /charities.
Even Fiennes says that there are benefits to organisations associated with the royals separate to finance.

Roussette · 22/06/2023 15:50

Yes of course there are benefits to orgs seperate to Finance. That's been covered in the Report I linked.
The feelgood factor for starters. The excitement of a Royal visiting the charity. And so on.

I just read it. That's all. And I linked it as an interesting read.

I get more staunchly Republican by the say. We’ve had HMQ funeral, the Coronation, Trooping the Colour, Garter Ceremony and Royal Ascot this week and C3 first State Opening on the horizon. Enough!

Did you have to attend them all, how did this affect you?

There are absolutely zero arguments for retaining a monarchy.

it affects everyone because we paid for them. Not to mention that protestors were wrongly arrested at the coronation. The right to protest is important and the kings party's shouldn't stop people exercising their right to protest.

Out of interest, what was the cost for royal ascot that you paid towards? 🤔

SarahShorty · 22/06/2023 16:13

The bloody heck has Brexit got to do with anything? I'll add my thoughts to this digression anyway:

You hate Brexit because you love the EU.
I hate Brexit because it was deliberately sabotaged and not done properly.
We are not the same.

@Roussette @Iwantcakeeveryday

Thanks for your support 😃

I agree there are attempts at diversion going on. Unfortunate in what's always an interesting debate.

CathyorClaire · 22/06/2023 16:25

If you don;t like it, switch off!

Commercial channels can choose the extent of their coverage but telling people to switch off of they don't like it is hardly fair to those paying extortionate sums for a BBC licence when they too are showing blanket coverage of royal events on every channel they run.

How many freeview channels are there? How much on demand shows and films are there? There's plenty of choice if you didn't want to watch the funeral, the first in 70 years! 🙄

The funeral was watched by millions. More than interminable football matches that are shown and droned on about by boring old commentators. Why don't we ban those every blinking week? Why don't we ban the world and European cups that take up all the daytime and evening viewing, with the pre-commentary, the match, the post-commentary, the pre-commentary, the highlights, the post commentary. Or why don't you do as I do, don't moan and detract from someone else's enjoyment, but find something alternative to watch or, shocking suggestion, go for a walk.

As for the coronation, it replaced a morning cooking show. Oh my god. Will we ever get over the deprivation!

CathyorClaire · 22/06/2023 16:41

David Haigh says the opposite.

David Haigh's firm has links to the royals and publishes invariably favourable reports on their financial value to the country while offering no indication as to who commissioned them or why.

Barbadossunset · 22/06/2023 16:45

Why was my comment deleted?
Rousette said posters are never ever rude to each other on politics threads and I gave a few examples out of many to show this was not so. I wasn’t being rude to anyone.

CathyorClaire · 22/06/2023 16:49

The licence fee is compulsory.

Why should those who pay it have blanket royal coverage imposed on them or be exhorted to watch re-runs of auction shows somewhere else.

Even those who don't want to watch the football get an alternative.

SarahShorty · 22/06/2023 16:53

Why was my comment deleted?

Because this is Mumsnet. I mostly stick to the conception boards here. I scroll through AIBU? and get close to having an aneurysm.

The licence fee is compulsory.

Only if you watch any live broadcast television which includes things like Sky News on YouTube or if you watch BBC iPlayer. You can watch non-live content like 4OD or ITV On Demand without a licence.

Maybe do something else like read a book - or is a few hours without television unimaginable to you?

sorry this isn't really the topic but I didn't;t realise that about live YouTube news?

SarahShorty · 22/06/2023 17:00

Anything streaming that is also being broadcast on television requires a licence. Even though Sky News streams 24/7 on YouTube, you still need a licence. And let's face it, it's probably not even enforceable anyway. It used to be that you didn't need a licence to watch TV on a portable battery powered device, but the moment you plugged it into power, then the property you were in needed a TV licence. Whether that is true today I'm not sure. The TV licensing laws have always been very flawed and mostly unenforceable.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 22/06/2023 17:04

David Haigh works in the commercial sector. He advises national and international companies. They're not going to stay with him if he's telling them to do things that are proving to be not in their interest.

Are you suggesting that Charles is commissioning and paying for these reports? 🙄 Charles who moaned about paying for his sons wife? Oh. OK then. 😂

They showed different things on BBC2 during the day and on BBC 1 in the evening. Or you could have watched the iPlayer or listened to the radio, or watched tv with the kids. Or how using about the sports app. Or maybe do some online learning.

One funeral in 70 years that drew millions of viewers versus football comps every 2 years. Now we have women's football comps, I'm guessing those will be the other 2 years. Football on Saturdays, Sundays, mid-week.

And that's just football. That doesn't include the tennis. Wimbledon is on BBC 1 and BBC 2. For two weeks.

For those of us not interested in sport, we lose loads of hours viewing. But, I confess, I'm pretty radical in my ideas. I switch to another channel.
