Abolishing the Monarchy

tigger2022 · 19/06/2023 14:42

A few people on different sides of the debate have expressed an interest in discussing/debating this, so I thought we could give it a go…

Abolishing the monarchy?

My personal view: I used to be a staunch republican but have since completely changed my view. I think the constitutional monarchy is a slightly odd system, but seems to do the job, and I can’t think of another country’s system which is actually preferable. I also find myself less & less convinced by republican arguments…

Thoughts?

Ah yes, the Tooting popular front. I think you must be very old🙂

tigger2022 · 21/06/2023 21:47

Charles must be one of the most unpopular heirs to ascend the throne yet 55% people have a positive view of the monarchy 8 months in (net +19). And there are a pretty popular (so far) pair of heirs incoming in the not-too-distant-sorry-chaz-future. So I think the demise of the monarchy is greatly exaggerated!

I look forward to Queen Catherine.

Why?

She dicked about at the now bankrupt Party Pieces while waiting for Willy to propose and the trademark Early Years Initiative offers nothing new.

Well, she dicked about at Jigsaw too all along with citing her relationship with a a 'high profile man' as the reason:

You’ve accidentally shared an article which says she worked there part time and then had to stop due to press intrusion

From the article you shared:
Robinson said she was “so impressed” by Kate’s work ethic, adding that she was “very mature for a 26-year-old.”
I personally like to read articles before I share them.

If the press inftrusion got in the way of her work, why not go and work for the family firm. She wasn't working on your dime so why do you care?

mayorofcasterbridge · 21/06/2023 23:48

Monarchy all the way!!! Look at the republics around the world...!!

quantumbutterfly · 22/06/2023 08:55

Republic all the way, monarchy is a pyramid scheme.

The Robinson who loaned her Mustique villa to the workshy duo then handed over a bespoke job on a plate on the strength of a phone call?

Her opinion doesn't look biased at all.

I do not support the royal family but see them as a British icon and should stay as symbolic to Britain's history.
There are many here, preferring Republican system - who would prefer the filthy rich wannabees to laud it over like the US system with a horrendous medical system depending on persons wealth.

Jealousy, greed, pride, lust, wrath is being vented to take away the Royal from UK is clearly evident in some posts.

Novella4 · 22/06/2023 11:07

@Wiseflower

Take a breath.

The US system is erroneously cited here constantly . I suppose it’s an attempt to drum up fear .
It is an invalid comparison as the US combine PM and President into one role. We don’t and there are zero plans to do so .

The other diversion attempt is the ‘ ok set out every detail of the new system right now on mumsnet!’

And those billionaires you ( rightly ) object to ? Would those be same ones who hand Charles bags stuffed with cash ( which Charles took happily and it is currently under investigation but don’t ask too many questions ok??) or who partied with Andrew’s close friend Epstein ?

My ballot question is not a perfect solution but it would be almost free way of garnering some clarity as to real support . All we have at present are the paid for 500 respondent ‘surveys ‘ quoted here .
Royalists would have an advantage as the older and whiter you are the the more likely you are to vote - ans the more likely you are to be a royalist

Wiseflower · 22/06/2023 11:17

Sorry but that is codswallop! a huge majority of non-white people are supportes of the royals. There is racism everywhere that should be abolished ...tax avoiding millionaires, billionaires should not dictate or support politics financially like they do in Republican US.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 22/06/2023 11:18

with a horrendous medical system depending on persons wealth.

Well that happens in the Uk too because the NHS is not fit for purpose. Many treatments are a postcode lottery, take HRT for example. There a lot of women in the UK able to access proper menopause care privately, while others in the same area won;t be able to and struggle on without proper care and the care other women are able to buy. Same can be said for mental health care. The US health system isn't great, but neither is the NHS. I do not think having a monarchy has anything to do with what kind of health care system we have.

Barbadossunset · 22/06/2023 11:34

CathyorClaire
You get so much pleasure from saying how awful they all are. If the institution is abolished you’ll be denied this pleasure (though maybe you can find a few rich poshos to direct insults ar instead).

Wiseflower · 22/06/2023 11:54

the NHS has provide a great service and as a British person, we are very proud of. I and all my friends and family over the years of great service from cancer treatment, maternity care, check ups and everything else. We can all vouch for that.

Lucky you. Millions more do not have the same experience. Two in my family have been neglected and not given the care they should, simply because of where we live and stretched resources, and sadly really really poor GP care, if you can call it that. It's not uncommon, especially now, for people to complain about the poor care and service they get from the NHS. people are using private care for a reason.

SarahShorty · 22/06/2023 12:15

The US and UK healthcare systems are both deeply flawed.

Both systems make a sickening amount of money in different ways.

The US healthcare system goes out of its way to give you treatments, tests and drugs that you don't actually need and your insurance pays out or you do depending on your level of coverage. The one beautiful thing about it is that there are no waiting lists.

The NHS makes it as difficult as possible to get treatment, tests and drugs, especially if you genuinely need it all the while still expecting you to pay into it. There are also record waiting lists.

To sum up:
"Ouch, I'm going to need stitches!"

US system: "Sure! That'll be $58,000."
UK system: "I can help you in 38 months"

And Canada for the hell of it.

Canada: "Kill yourself."

No, why would you misconstrue my words like that? I made a point of saying that wealthy people can afford care that should be part of the NHS and that others without that kind of money cannot access the same care. I specifically said both the US and UK systems aren't good. I responded to you because you seem to think theres nothing wrong with the NHS and that if you can get access to proper care then everyone must. Its not true. How can you be unaware of the problems with accessing care in the NHS at the moment?
