Weren't there over a hundred heads of state/presidents/prime ministers/ whatever you call them there, including Macron, Von Leyden and a whole host of others? Plenty of " soft diplomacy " on show.

I agree not having POTUS there shows how irrelevant the monarchy is now.

Surely he just would have been unable to withstand the length of the service and thats without the wait before it even started, on possibly uncomfy seats. He seems so frail.

Biden is elected. That is where his power comes from.
He does not need to argue about soft power as a hereditary Royal.

Agreed.

An inauguration happens every 4yrs, so not a once in a lifetime event that would require other countries to attend.

It's also telling that POTUS did infact come to HMQE funeral. Infact, I think pretty much all of G7 was there. Possibly most of g20?
The same with Mandela funeral.

There is no 'power' nor respect here.

@notanotheroneagain but no US president has ever attended a coronation. And the Queen wasn’t there for Biden’s inauguration (and nor was Charles).
There are plenty of reasonable ways to argue that Britain’s clout vis a vis the US has decreased.

This is not one of them!

CurlewKate · 14/05/2023 08:28

The US President has never attended a Coronation.

FLOTUS is attending this year.

Which she never did before.
Both attended HMQE funeral. I outlined the point. You don't get it.

Oh well, never mind.

You said no one powerful attended.

I'm sure Macron, Albanese, Steinmeier, Mrs Zelensky, Trudeau, Mattarella, Higgins, Sharif, Buhari, Duda, Hipkins, Van der Belen, et al will be delighted to be put in their place.

FYI Jill Biden was there to represent her husband.

But this is typical of a certain kind of Little Englander snobbery that no other country is of particular interest or power.

Yes, he came over for Queen's funeral and thus had an understanding of the whole rigmarole about getting everyone in and out of the Abbey.

I wouldn't like to have to jet over from America and not have close access to a cup of tea or a toilet for several hours at a high profile event.

No idea about C&C and W&C arrival timings. I'd read C&C were ahead of time. Hopefully Charles not too stroppy about it :)
