What next for the Sussexes?

Casuaala · 07/05/2023 14:49

I thought yesterday couldn't have gone better, all things considered; there was the least amount of drama or negative coverage possible regarding the Sussexes.

I'd like to hope that this marks a fresh start. Harry's got all the recriminations off his chest. The Royal Family have maintained a dignified silence and hopefully the future is rosy. The Sussexes can have the life they want in the US, with a small presence in family events back here when appropriate. (I wouldn't be surprised however if Megan never makes it back on UK soil).

What on earth do you mean “the fashion houses don’t use the royals?” The explicit meaning of alllllll of the coverage of royal fashion is advertising. What is Kate wearing, who made it, how she influences fashion, how you can achieve the look? That is advertising and benefits the brand. Its only more or less tacit because…well..I don’t know why the royals shilling for one designer is seen as virtuous while another royal wearing another designer is seen as embarrassing.

I never said the Fashion Houses don't use the Royals.

I said they've never blatantly used them to advertise for them.

Dior had 3 separate Instagram posts detailing Harry wearing them yesterday- while the Coronation was happening.

Making it known who dressed who, is one thing. Doing a blatant advert is new. It's all advertising, this is just far more obvious.

Sudeko · 07/05/2023 16:54

The market for actresses over 40 playing mum roles is saturated by talented actresses who have already enjoyed considerable success. You have to be supremely good because it is all about your acting ability and less about simply looking good.

LlynTegid · 07/05/2023 16:56

I hope you are correct OP and it does bring some small amount of healing.

I do still wish that things had turned out differently and the Duke of Sussex had been able to continue his support for veterans and the military more widely. This is something a member of the Royal Family can do which no politician can.

MrsFinkelstein · 07/05/2023 14:53

Joking aside, I hope they find work that is worthwhile and meaningful for them, that doesn't involve reliving trauma and (un?)intentionally hurting others.

They may rebuild family relationships, but whatever I hope they are happy and enjoy their life.

I agree, @MrsFinkelstein, I hope he finds some meaningful employment and carries on with his life. Publishing more books probably means more barbs towards the RF, though, which is a shame, because I don’t think it does him any good, aside from the $$$. I live in the US and I don’t feel that “Spare” did his image any good over here-yes, it brought in mega-bucks and garnered publicity for a week, but my sense is that people think less of him now, tbh.

DuchessOfPort · 07/05/2023 17:17

I think Harry was probably very relieved that a) he got a free suit and b) the DM hadn’t picked up on the Spectator’s tidbit of gossip which was the Queen referring to Meghan as “evil” at Balmoral!

The paperback version of Spare will be released at some point this year and there's talk that Harry will add a chapter to address what's happened since the hardback came out. I wonder if Meghan won't surface properly until that's out of the way and that her new agent – he was the inspiration for the Entourage character Ari Gold! – is in the meantime plotting her next career move. I'd be amazed if she went back into acting, I think producing is more likely, like what Reese Witherspoon has done. Maybe she'll produce a Crown-style drama for Netflix adapted from Spare!

That's simply not true, they've done it for years already. Alexander McQueen tweeted the hell of Kate's wedding dress and Pippa's bridesmaid's outfit and Versace regularly put out press releases to the papers every time they dressed Diana. The only difference is that Instagram is available now, whereas it didn't exist then.

I thought the royal family etiquette was that the outfit is paid for rather than being a freebie? And for major occasions uses a British designer, who leaves it to the royal to decide how much they (the designer) gets name checked.

So if it was a freebie, publicised by the designer (brand), and the brand isn't British, it isn't quite business as usual.

I am sure fashion houses do like to have a cosy relationship with the royals (as with other good customers with money to spend and a public profile), and the royals like to get to the front of the queue and preferential treatment. But there isn't outright sponsorship

I'm guessing Harry can accept freebies now as a non-working Royal?

REP22 · 07/05/2023 18:13

Harry's book deal was for three books, so there are another couple of Spares to look forward to.

Harry's next appearance will be walking the runway for Dior.

He did it yesterday for them in the Abbey.

Er?

TheTERFnextDoor · 07/05/2023 18:43

I'm surprised Dior are bragging about that suit. It was creased and too big for him! Confused

Yes, of course - wasn't that one of the major reasons for leaving?

Just as Zara Tindall is free to pursue various commercial opportunities, and Mike Tindall to go on I'm a Celeb.

Of course, it would have saved a lot of hassle if H&M had decided that's what they wanted at the start, rather than deciding to become working royals and then finding it wasn't for them.

But they are now free to get these sorts of sponsorship.

Yes I wonder why...

carolinestowcrat · 07/05/2023 19:42

The Sussex's relationship with Dior isn't anything new, Meghan wore Dior to the Queen's Jubilee service last summer.

Whaeanui · 07/05/2023 19:46

I’m choosing to blame Dior for the highly tacky PR’ing of his suit

You can find the social media posts of all the designers dressing lots of other royals, I put a bunch of them on another thread earlier. The designers for Sophie, and other European royals. It’s not uncommon and I don’t see the problem.

That is an interesting article.

polkadotdalmation · 07/05/2023 19:55

I don't care what they do provided it isn't making money out of slagging off your family.
I think charles forgives harry anything so one day he may come for a visit, bring the kids and his wife, low key and just cordial. Personally I would cut them all loose, but it's different if it is your son. William will never forgive him though. He loves his dad, and the last couple of years have aged him massively.

newfriend05 · 07/05/2023 19:59

I actually think Megan is definitely thinking she played it all wrong .. she would of had a front row seat in front of millions and millions of people .. and with all the run up to it .. all the attention.. she now divorce him within 5 years I think and play the victim

Surely at some point he has to get a job? Even if just to bring some meaning and self respect to his life? He work for a charity full time, or as pp suggested go into conservation work. His wanted a “normal” life, time to start setting one up.

Agree

Semantics. These threads are amusing, people can always find a way to suit their point of view

CathyorClaire · 07/05/2023 20:38

Harry's got all the recriminations off his chest.

He hasn't.

It's a three book deal and he's already said there's a lot more he could have put in the first but didn't.

More revelations are what's next and he's going to have to up the shock factor to garner interest.

After that brief trip round the publicity block : busted flush.
