What next for the Sussexes?

Casuaala · 07/05/2023 14:49

I thought yesterday couldn't have gone better, all things considered; there was the least amount of drama or negative coverage possible regarding the Sussexes.

I'd like to hope that this marks a fresh start. Harry's got all the recriminations off his chest. The Royal Family have maintained a dignified silence and hopefully the future is rosy. The Sussexes can have the life they want in the US, with a small presence in family events back here when appropriate. (I wouldn't be surprised however if Megan never makes it back on UK soil).

Has anyone here gone public suggesting that drinking is a positive thing for one's mental health
I don't know. What's that to do with liking a drink on an evening.

Harry went on a program and described recreational drug use as a positive thing in his life. You brought up alcohol. People glorifying and promoting the medical benefits of using alcohol would be the parallel. No one here has done that, whether they drink or not.

Inkanta · 15/05/2023 20:12

So long as people practice what they preach. Harry has been open and honest and I respect him for that.

AliceOlive · 15/05/2023 20:16

I figured.

Take it up with St Paul ...

Hard core drinkers and drug takers are usually secretive about it.

Secretive? Not round here, only last week some chap stumbles in our local pharmacy and says to puzzled member of staff 'of course I'm drunk, I'm an alcoholic'

Yes I hear you Samcro. Rational and logical post. Harry is not exactly the hard core drug taker. Some of the evening posters on here probably do worse with alcohol.

Alcohol causes more problems than any other drug. And kids are getting the message that it’s okay to drink because it’s in their homes & freely advertised. It’s not okay, but it’s socially acceptable. In my country, the drug and alcohol authorities are most voluble about what causes the greater problems. It’s alcohol. But people who like a drink/s just want to ignore this and pretend it’s not a problem.

AliceOlive · 16/05/2023 01:22

You obviously don’t live in the United States though. I remember when alcohol was our worst problem.

More people over age 12 in the United States have used alcohol in the past year than any other drug or tobacco product, and alcohol use disorder is the most common type of substance use disorder in the United States.

A Colorado children's hospital reports visits by teens to its emergency department and satellite urgent care centers more than quadrupled after the state legalized marijuana, a new study finds. Researchers examined the hospital's records for 13- to 21-year-olds between 2005 and 2015.

What are you even arguing? Alcohol is worse so drugs are just fine?

Inkanta · 16/05/2023 05:06

*I would say it is one of the fundamental parts of my life that changed me and helped me deal with the traumas and the pains of the past. They’re unlocking so much of what we’ve suppressed.”

This is what Harry said (as the Tatler reports). I don't read it as glorifying or that it's even a part of his life now. He describes how he coped. It's not for me to judge how he coped. I've been fortunate not to lose a parent as a child or to suffer with high anxiety or PTSD in my life. I appreciate his openness and honesty and I empathise - its very personal stuff. It's not black and white or a glorification of weed or psychedelics. Its a description of his lived experience.

It worries me that so many people don’t focus on the damage done to health, but also to family members of alcoholics -in so many ways, foetal alcohol syndrome, poverty, abuse, violence. The damage done to other road users. The damage done to society as a whole. I believe this the reason for this is that the alcohol industry is very powerful - lobbyists will lobby (think the tobacco industry in western countries up until the last few decades), governments make a lot of money out of it via taxes, and many many people like a drink, so less willing to admit to, or even think about, the damage it causes

Anyone who has seen someone’s life be eaten up by a weed habit knows how pernicious it is. It doesn’t need to be a gateway drug, it’s damaging enough in its own right. Minimising the dangers of weed smoking is downright irresponsible.

H shows signs of someone who leans on drugs, and his own testimony, eg that he used up his wife’s gas and air during her labour, and that he found benefits to his mental health from mind altering substances confirms that. His attitude to drug use is unhealthy, and the fact that he wants to share it with millions is quite troubling.

queenofarles · 16/05/2023 08:42

some of the responses here are just so bizarre ,

And people glorifying Harry for taking Drugs need to have a quiet word with themselves as this is really a step too far ,

, Taking hallucinating drugs or weed has nothing to do with dealing with grief ,

And there is a serious drug problem in the US ,
California is not even in the top ten states with drug problems!
