Lighthearted but Not My King? Yay or nay?

It's apparent on the coronation threads today that this is an emotive subject on both sides. So for a snapshot of opinions please comment simply yay or nay as to whether you feel Charles is your king!

Yay 💯

vera99 · 06/05/2023 22:52

No.

dinkytoon · 06/05/2023 22:53

No thankyou.

Fansandblankets · 06/05/2023 23:27

Yay

quantumbutterfly · 06/05/2023 23:43

nay

tatteddear · 07/05/2023 06:15

@Mia85 Jane grey had no children, but she had two sisters, who Elizabeth the 1st could have named as heir and who were Therefore constantly suspected of plotting against her (or were the focus of plots).

Yay. I can't remotely get worked up about the Monarchy in comparison to all the other serious problems the UK faces. I'm not religious either so his place as head of the church of England affects me not a jot. I feel unswayed either away about having a Monarchy, it is what it is for now.

Having a monarchy does reinforce the idea that inequality for the sake of it is acceptable though. In 2023 I don't think it should be.

CiderRefresher · 07/05/2023 07:58

This makes me laugh, it's not a choice! He is the King whether anyone wants him to be or not 😂

Dungaree · 07/05/2023 17:26

He is a figure head that you can choose to recognise as your king 😄 or not.

roarfeckingroarr · 07/05/2023 17:28

I mean he demonstrably is your king if you're a British or commonwealth citizen. Your protests mean nothing.

Should’ve AIBU voted this post to make it easier to gauge

Yes I realised afterwards! I think it's about 60:40 Nay.
Of course I understand saying nay (as I am) doesn't change anything legally. But it's an interesting position in time to be able to say it - before I think people would say they weren't a royalist, or weren't interested in the royal family. I really do think they've only got a generation left of pomp and circumstance before it becomes much more of a token royalty.

Nay.

TheOccupier · 07/05/2023 22:17

YAY.

The whole "Not My King" thing is childish and pathetic. Feel free to boycott cash, stamps, and having a British passport if you really feel that way.

This is very illustrative of the totalitarian tendencies of some royalists.

I don’t think that fact is wasted on anyone.

I don’t think that anyone thinks, when they declare ‘Not My King’ that Charles ceases to be their king, they are simply expressing that they don’t support the Monarchy.

Taking the statement literally is a bit stupid.

MonsterFiesta · 07/05/2023 23:00

For anyone who is struggling with the point:

’Not My President’ or ‘Not My Prime minister’ is, and has for sometime been, a common statement made by people in various English-speaking to express that they don’t support their elected President/PM (though it’s probably most widely used in the US).

The people making that statement do not (generally…) believe it to be a literal one, it is just a shorthand way of expressing their dissatisfaction.

’NotMyKing’ is the same, and simply means that the speaker, or placard-holder, does not support the monarchy.

I suspect this is obvious to most people but there do seem to be a few struggling.

May

You want Theresa May as your King? Bold move.

Maireas · 08/05/2023 06:29

I want Penny Mordaunt to rule jointly with Princess Anne, Floella Benjamin and Bryn Terfel.

Whichnumbers · 08/05/2023 06:30

I find it all a bit odd in modern times, to have all the hocus pocus like back in the day with kissing rings, wearing fur clocks etc. I’m not into religion though for similar reasons.

if that’s what floats other boats fine, but I find it weird

WaitingfortheTardis · 08/05/2023 06:31

Yes, he is my king.

Maireas · 08/05/2023 06:32

Kissing rings?
Fur clocks?
Blimey I missed those bits 🤭🤭🤭

milveycrohn · 08/05/2023 06:35

It doesn't really matter whether you want him to be or not. He is the King. It doesn't really affect my life very much.

Roselilly36 · 08/05/2023 06:43

NAY for many reasons.

echt · 08/05/2023 06:46

How can you have an opinion on a fact? If you're a British subject, he is your king, like it or not.

Notagardener · 08/05/2023 06:47

Nay
