Using t*mpongate as an insult

Ok I’m probably going to get piled on but whatever…

Does anyone feel a bit uncomfortable about the way some people casually drop in references from Camilla/Charles’s leaked telephone conversation as a drive-by insult? Or casually use it as a cruel nickname for them or something?

Having that leaked was such a violation, and when it’s referenced so callously to try and humiliate them it feels as ick to me as if people were quoting from leaked revenge porn or something.

It’s more insulting that you think the word ‘tampon’ is something to be afraid of.

Grow up!

tigger2022 · 05/05/2023 14:56

Not really the point of the thread but to explain my reasoning: it’s used as an insulting nickname for Camilla as a way of referencing something humiliating from her past, and I thought it was the best way of discussing it without contributing to any cruelty.

That was for @CountryCousin by the way

Uncomfortable?! Not in the slightest.

Yep!

LlynTegid · 05/05/2023 15:11

I've not heard it myself, but agree that women's sanpro should not be an insult.

Simianwalk · 05/05/2023 15:13

It was pretty vile though. I still can't believe he actually said it! So deeply unsexy.

Mars27 · 05/05/2023 15:13

I love calling him King Tampax.

No respect at all from me. If he hadn't been so spineless, a lot of suffering would've been prevented. Should have taken a leaf out of his great uncle book, really.

DanceMonster · 05/05/2023 15:15

I actually agree. They were the victims of a crime and I think it’s pretty tasteless to refer to it as a joke. It’s not the fact that it’s about tampons, joking about anything that was illegally leaked from a private conversation is a shitty thing to do. And I’m a massive republican who thinks the monarchy is a revolting institution, so my opinions on it have nothing to do with the people themselves.

Oh behave. The OP didn’t intimate they’re scared of the word tampon whatsoever.

wildinthecountry · 05/05/2023 15:21

I feel it's more the younger people who talk about tampon-gate really , for those of us who were around then it's ancient history . Most of us don't really care , except it was a huge invasion of privacy .

Lurkingandlearning · 05/05/2023 15:23

I thought he wrote that in a love letter 🙄 the leaking was a violation of privacy- it was a private letter, phone call whichever. But it’s out there now and people haven’t forgotten.

I f she found it humiliating perhaps she could’ve… oh I don’t know… stopped shagging someone else’s husband, stopped shagging a man that thought that was sexy.

she didn’t so probably found it sexy too. So why would she feel humiliated?

Isn’t that victim blaming though? Leaking their personal correspondence was a crime. Are you saying she deserved it because of her behaviour?
I have absolutely no time for the royals at all; they’re a ridiculous bunch. But they’re as entitled to privacy as anyone else, and I don’t think jokes should be made off the back of a crime they were a victim of.

Yellowdays · 05/05/2023 15:48

I don't like it, and I would get rid of the royal family in a heartbeat. There are plenty of better criticisms of them.

Exactly. There are so many legitimate things to criticise them for, I don’t think we need to be using info that we only know about because of someone else’s criminal activity.

Samcro · 05/05/2023 15:52

YES
thank you op . I think using something taken illegally from a private conversation is awful.

DanceMonster · 05/05/2023 15:53

drpet49 · 05/05/2023 15:49

This.

It’s also quite widely misrepresented… everyone believes that he said ‘I wish I could come back as a tampon’ whereas what he actually said was ‘it would be just my luck to come back as a tampon’ (paraphrasing slightly). Still rank, but not what people say he says.

Seconded.

We can't support Harry and other celebs holding tabloids to account for hacking voice messages & phones, then joke about a personal phone call being illegally hacked.

And please, if you're going to use it as an insult, then at least get it fecking right.
He didn't say he wanted to be a tampon, he said with his luck he'd get reincarnated as a tampon and just get flushed.

But no one seems to care about facts nowadays.

caringcarer · 05/05/2023 16:38

I think it is despicable of Harry to have dragged this up again just before the coronation. He has no class at all.

CoronationWombleSandwiches · 05/05/2023 16:45

I think people refer to Tampongate because, here Charles is, asking people to swear allegiance to him, being anointed with holy oil etc. as if he is some kind of divine being but the reality is, he's just a human like the rest of us who has silly conversations with his mistress. People are using it to take him down a peg.

What an idiot. He is behaving like a tampon these days prioritizing his step-family over his real one when at least one of his son's is clearly crying out for his attention.

CathyorClaire · 05/05/2023 16:48

Has Harry referred to it?

Even as a republican I find the glee it's repeatedly thrown about with distasteful and the constant misquoting of what was said tedious.

It was part of a private conversation hacked way before anyone was aware phone hacking was even a thing. There's plenty of stuff legally in the public domain that's open to criticism with far more legitimacy.
