The royal family

The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

MamoruHisaishi · 02/05/2023 12:53

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

Yanbu and I wouldn't be surprised if he abdicated early and Will & Kate took over, to boost popularity.

TodayInahurry · 03/05/2023 08:14

The Royal Family are very popular, despite the moaning of a few people on MN. We are having a big village party on Saturday. I would have liked to get to London to watch but I really hate huge crowds.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/05/2023 08:19

I've done my bit. We have a small coronation party in the office tomorrow and I've just dusted the icing sugar onto a Victoria sponge cake and put it in its box

Done your bit? Why even bother? I worked in an office full of republicans. We’d have pissed ourselves if you bought in a coronation cake.

I do think you will find that it is more than a few moaning posters on MN!

I think he'll abdicate too and it will be another mistake

The cost of this magic hat party won't be forgotten
So it's a popularity contest is it , not a life time commitment ?

Ok we are bored with Wills- next !

It will weaken them further if he does - so I hope you are right

Arginalia · 03/05/2023 08:40

Charles ain't gonna abdicate - the extent of the coronation should tell you that - waited all his life to be king and is going to make the most of it - so you'd better get used to him.

8roses · 03/05/2023 09:04

And yet there most of you will be - watching like hawks for something to moan about. Why don’t you refuse the bank holiday and go to work if everyone is so poor - give your own wages away. Or do some volunteering. Too busy defrosting your freezers and listening to 80s tunes - that says it all. What a bunch of miseries.

I e been a volunteer for 16 years now, that good enough for you?
And for 10 of those years it was many many hours a week, almost as much as a part time kob

We can do all these things and still not agree with this massive expensive party

Roussette · 03/05/2023 09:08

Job!

8roses · 03/05/2023 09:08

You won’t be watching then will you rousette?

8roses · 03/05/2023 09:09

Better things to do no doubt - why would you want to watch something you object to so much? That would be kind of hypocritical- adding to the viewing figures.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 03/05/2023 09:14

The coronation merch in supermarkets I've been to over a roughly 15 mile radius doesn't seem to be selling very well. I remember last year's jubilee stuff was sold out a good couple of months before. So that's my marker for thinking people aren't very interested - and the polls of course. As a committed republican I'll be rubbernecking at the ceremony and inviting the whole family round to eat cakes because DD decided late that she wants to join in the 'fun' and it's cake, I won't complain. Like I said, plenty of merch to be able to do that - I hope Aldi still have coronation carrot toys available though 😱

IsGoodIsDon · 03/05/2023 09:18

I think Charles would have gained a lot of respect and favour if he offered to pay for his own party.

I will watch part of it, that ok with you?

My grouting on my floor tiles desperately needs doing so will tackle that while it's on 😅

The concert line up is uninspiring. They could have had a concert that people really wanted to watch on TV

I can’t think of one decent band that would support the royals. Not one. Dd 16 said to me that Katy Perry was a ‘has been’ and who were ‘Take That’ and ‘Lionel Ritchie?’

Love how the headliners aren’t even British😂 except Take That. Christ, Lionel Ritchie.😂. His heyday was 40 years ago.

Aw, I do like Lionel though. I watch him on American Idol as a judge and he seems nice. He can still sing so he’ll probably save the concert. 😬

I’m not really arsed with the Royals, I don’t know anyone that particular wants them, they’re just a bit irrelevant to real life. We are going away on Friday with friends so will avoid most things Coronation related.

I did have to smile as one of my kids friends were told they had to make bunting for the coronation at school. He’s managed to get a couple of pieces of bunting put up right by reception that say ’not my king’ without the teachers noticing. Or maybe they know and agree! Loads of the kids have had their photos taken next to it and are all finding it very funny.

Despite lots of them not being the best looking people, I don’t think interest, or lack of, in the Royals, has anything to do with how they look.

Why should l refuse the bank holiday?

Ive paid in enough to support the parasites. I deserve it.

What a silly comment, from start to finish.

polkadotdalmation · 03/05/2023 10:33

What a lot of miseries! Bunting going up where I live and surrounding villages. Lots of village events planned.

derxa · 03/05/2023 10:35

I'm in Scotland :) Nobody gives a shit except maybe a few Royal Deesiders and some Rangers fans. Really? You don't speak for me. We don't have the same attitude to royalty up here but I'll be watching it on the telly like many other Scots.
Like the Queen, Charle likes Scotland and the countryside unlike most of our elected politicians.

derxa · 03/05/2023 10:39

Roussette · 03/05/2023 07:57

I honestly don't understand what point you are trying to make.

The Coronation is happening. The security cost alone is over £150million. There has to be security. Nowhere have I said wages should be cut. Such a strange thing to take from my posts.

I have however explained who I think should be paying for this in my longer post.

That security money is going into the pockets of ordinary men and women.

Well there was no interest in having a street party here and two of my siblings have found that to be the case on their streets too. And they both live in areas of the uk where the RF is usually very popular (think sizeable military bases). Everyone who can is trying to save for a holiday or to do essential repairs on their house.

8roses · 03/05/2023 11:22

@Roussette not really no, why would you watch something you object to? So you can moan about it in here!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2023 11:26

Interesting link about the rushed-through anti-protest legislation, Flappingtarps, and perhaps another indication of just how many issues Charles faces as a result of his own behaviour (does anyone seriously imagine this would have been necessary for the late Queen?)

In many ways I hope they do target peaceful protesters. Not pleasant for them of course, but once again it would show what Charles is prepared to enable for the sake of his own interests ... all grist to the mill as they say

AskMeMore · 03/05/2023 11:28

@derxa You could justify anything on that basis!
Government spending millions on a mega birthday bash for the Prime Minster. But the money is being spent on wages going into the pockets of ordinary people.
I know you are really stretching to justify this expensive charade when you start arguing that.

It's a State occasion not a birthday bash
