The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

MamoruHisaishi · 02/05/2023 12:53

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

I don’t think everyone needs to live in misery at all just because others are worse off. But displays like the coronation are a step too far. And then to hear that Charles is ‘bored’ because the poor little lamb has to wait a few minutes in his carriage.

How is deeming it a step too far though? Who is judging it? You?

Bollocks.

It’s not bollocks.

Its the logical conclusion from ‘Of course if we didn’t have pomp and ceremony there would be no social injustice at all.’

You’re saying that it’s okay because ‘what about that other social injustice over there’.

It a silly child like argument.

Why is debate about the Monarchy so feared on here?

Don't understand it. Everything should be questioned if we are able to. The Monarchy are part of the fabric of our society but we don't vote for them. They are foisted on us whether we like it or not. Why can't we question that?

It's a bloody poor show if we just have to accept everything

so how come you’re always getting a bee in your bonnet when anyone criticises Harry and Meghan? You’re always quickly trying to shut down the critique by insinuating you’re being bullied and that the other poster is racist

You search out a post from me from two days ago. Do you do this with other posters? To find something to criticise them about?

Do you?

I don't know you, but given you're a NCer, it's hardly surprising is it...

I don't call people racist. I have said Meghan has been subjected to racism.

We are on a discussion forum. I have not shut down discussion anywhere. If I break TG, report me.

I won't respond to you again whatever you say to me.

I've been on quite a few of the RF threads recently and have always found Roussette to be a massively patient and respectful poster, unlike many! She has strong views but we are all entitled to those. She is also quite brave not to name change I think as she does attract a lot of flak for it.

Whaeanui · 08/05/2023 19:58

Agree @Flappingtarps there are a lot of insults thrown at @Roussette who remains incredibly patient and respectful.

Inkanta · 08/05/2023 20:12

There seems to be a lot of name changing going on. I don't change my name either and don't really understand the need to on The Royal Family section. I can understand a name change if you go on Relationships and tell your story but why on here?

Thoroughly agree with this - and unlike some I honestly can't remember her ever having called anyone silly names

This. Roussette and I agree on just about everything except the monarchy. I’ve never known her to be disrespectful or rude to other posters. She also manages to be anti monarchy without sneering at or insulting the RF.

This gave me real goosebumps in a way that Charles never did.

Because it was on a much bigger and grander scale? Grin

Thank you. Yes, we agree on so much. And this isn't a sticking point, just a difference of opinion!

Yes and edited for the key moment, and she was young and beautiful and glided through the thing almost divinely. Plus knowing that my dear departed mum was outside the Abbey having camped out all night in a state no doubt of near ecstasy as the joy of it all.

We have got apparently Coronation lite with an old man and woman and it shows. In my cold dark heart I shed a tear for the late Queen and apart from Diana that's my tear ducts shut down for any more royal grief.

If we must have mythology and a shared communitarian national narrative they had better be good or what's the point of it all. Danny Boyle's opening to the Olympics had it all - that's who we are that’s the Great in Great Britain.

Charles is the oldest king ever crowned.

Who is the oldest king or queen to ever ascend to the throne?

Age is just a number.

It has just been announced that the Met has apologised and accepted there were no grounds for detaining the Republic leaders. That surely opens up a case for compensation and wrongful arrest and the penny must have dropped about what the right to peacefully protest in a democracy looks like. They had had 4 months of talks with senior commanders and assurances about what was allowed to take place so the police lying and betraying that trust is a very ugly look and one I hope they will reflect upon moving forward. A huge own goal.

Met Police admit 'regret' over six Republican protesters arrested ahead of Coronation

The police said after reviewing the case no charges will be brought against them

Roussette · 08/05/2023 22:17

I hope my NDN gets to hear about this, he was crowing about the arrests yesterday, I had to walk away

AskMeMore · 08/05/2023 22:54

I wonder of the MN posters justifying these arrests will not admit they were wrong to do so?

Flute56 · 08/05/2023 23:32

I am not keen on Charles but because his mother was queen until she was 94 thn that makes him an old king He cannot help that. Its just the way it turned out. If Charles goes the same way as his mother then William will be made king in his 60s and if Willam also goes the same way then his son will be made king in his 60s and the pattern will never be broken and Britian will have older kings and Queens. It was only because our late Queens father died of cancer that she became Queen so young

BishopRock · 08/05/2023 23:40

QEII was 96, and I doubt Charles will live to that age, he doesn't appear healthy enough to go another two decades. Early to mid eighties would be my guess. So William potentially would become King around age 50.

This thread reminds me of a Brian Bilston poem:

Frankenstein was the monster’s name.
There’s no such thing as climate change.
A solero is a type of hat.
The planet is not round but flat.
Six is the legal drinking age.
Women are paid an equal wage.
Elvis was influenced by Take That.
The planet is not round but flat.
Achilles had a dodgy knee.
Terror comes from refugees.
Insomnia affects most cats.
The planet is not round but flat.
There are no fascists on the rise.
A politician never lies.
It’s impossible to change a fact.
The planet is not round but flat.

A good way of saying that things on the internet are often stupid, misinformed and people rarely question what they believe.

Talking to the regular posters in this thread is like banging your head against a brick wall. I wonder why that is!

Username0987 · 09/05/2023 07:39

I remember my Granny telling me that they bought a TV to watch the 1953 coronation, and all their neighbours crammed in to watch it too as hardly anyone had a TV.

I think any 'mystique' the RF had has long gone, people broadly speaking aren't as religious so the 'anointed by God' part is meaningless for many. The RF just seem to be super wealthy celebs now.

Don't understand the tourism argument for keeping them - crazy to base a country's government structure on it. The arrests of the protesters was disgraceful and imo will have pushed people who were maybe indifferent to the Royals firmly towards Republicanism.

Now Elvis was the real King I would bow down before him without any hesitation and such a tragic early death and truly a voice from heaven.

Meaningless I'm afraid, though I also wonder if Republic will go for wrongful arrest

I'd say it's pretty clear the real aim was just to get them out of sight, but it's all to the good in signposting just what the state expects to get away with and opening the eyes of those who wish to enquire
