The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

MamoruHisaishi · 02/05/2023 12:53

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

I see tons of support for the coronation in my area and on local FB. We've got celebrations on the green, garden parties, I'm going to an afternoon tea, there's lighting of beacons in the evening. It's going to be fab.

AskMeMore · 03/05/2023 11:38

@derxa I literally laughed out loud at your reply. You know it is deflection.
The Coronation is costing an absolute fortune, much more in real terms than Elizabeths. And the public response to the Coronation is meh.

The beacons is part of the paid Coronation weekend, it needs zero public support.

Where are the beacons in England?
In the UK, beacons will be located at landmarks including Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Windsor Great Park and Hillsborough Castle. They will also be illuminated at the Queen's estates of Sandringham and Balmoral, and on top of the UK's four highest peaks.

We're just in a little village in the north west so no special landmark. I don't think we'd be doing it here if the local organising committee hadn't supported and pushed for it. I doubt it's being pressed on us.

I remember these beacons before. Was it for the golden jubilee?

polkadotdalmation · 03/05/2023 11:48

Anti monarchists are welcome to protest, but they should do it peacefully. No giant signs that ruins other people's view or megaphones as recently, which interfere with other people.

wincarwoo · 03/05/2023 11:48

Kvetching · 02/05/2023 13:45

I doubt that’s true. I think there’s just a lack of interest and support in general. We don’t know a single person that has any interest in it. The one thing I’d like to see is the fly past, because we tend to see them looking slightly shabbier on their flight out of London.

if it was William and Kate, would people be interested? I doubt it. When it’s Williams turn, it’s likely they will be pretty old too.

It could easily be Williams turn in ten years.

AskMeMore · 03/05/2023 11:51

@PollyPeptide Lancashire are lighting the Platinum Jubilee beacons. Nothing to do with your village, it is across the whole county.
But I accept your village are unusually royalist about the Coronation. Most people are not.

@Roussette not really no, why would you watch something you object to? So you can moan about it in here!

It's history. Not all history is good. I watched the footage of 9/11 because its history not i don't object to terrorism.

PollyPeptide · 03/05/2023 12:04

Oh yes, because he's the Duke of Lancaster. I forget were the most royal county. Hehe.

Shall I tell you why @8roses?

I cannot come on a thread after the Coronation and talk about it, if I haven't watched any of it, can I?

It's like the H&M detractors going on and on about the book, picking 1% of it out from the DailyMail, todgers, dog bowls.. all without context because they haven't read it! I read it, I can talk about it. Those that haven't read it cannot talk about it being trashy, dishing the dirt, whatever. Because they haven't bothered to actually read it.

Ditto the Coronation, if I have watched some of it, I feel I can talk about it.

That is why
If I want to moan about the obscene amount of money it's costing I will. Sorry, it's a discussion forum, differing opinions and all of that...

That’s very good of you…

Meepledeep · 03/05/2023 12:52

Imagine wasting time watching something youre against and have no interest in just so you can then argue with strangers online about it. Some people need to get out more it seems!

Hehe, I don't think so!

But I won't be told I can't post or shouldn't watch the coronation because I'm not a true believer!

Ummm... the Monarchy is part of the fabric of our society and if people aren't happy with the way the country is being run they can vote tomorrow (don't forget everyone!), they can make their voice heard in a GE, or they can talk about the outdated Institution called the Monarchy.
I have a lot of interest in it! Maybe not the right kind for some folks...

Its history and the public paying for. Why would you not want debate it?

Meepledeep · 03/05/2023 12:59

Debating is good, sitting through it just to back up your arguments when in reality surely the bigger issue is the monarchy rather than just this event is sad. And a bit weird. Each to their own.

I can imagine it actually and I imagine quite a few Republicans will be watching because they are interested in the subject. Just as anyone who campaigns for cleaner air knows a lot about pollution! 😄

No one will be able to avoid it anyway, it will be on every newspaper site and featured on every news bulletin. There’s no escaping mention of it now if you are a person who’s fairly tuned in to the media and it’s only Wednesday fhs!

If I was to post on Tuesday something I read about it, posters would immediately ask if I watched it. How can I comment if I haven't seen any of it? I will not be watching all of it.... as I say the grouting on my floor tiles needs cleaning so it will be on in the background.

Meepledeep · 03/05/2023 13:11

Still weird, if someone said in a debate I didn't watch it as I hate them and what they stand for because of x, y, z I don't support them I dont see how that weakens the argument. Don't get me wrong if people waste their time on stuff like this I don't care, just didn't realise some people had so little going on in their lives they did stuff like this.

Do you think change ever comes about from ignoring and doing nothing?

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 03/05/2023 13:15

polkadotdalmation I entirely agree about the behaviour of protesters.

Equally, royalists should avoid waving flags which might obscure anyone's view, and not cheer so loudly that the protesters are drowned out.

It has to work both ways.

GarlicGrace · 03/05/2023 13:21

I'd feel more warmly toward the next monarch if it were Princess Anne, tbh. Not that I'm on kissing terms with either her or her pompous brother, but I've got more respect for Anne. I do know about Chas's good works, I just don't like him and think he's a bit of a twit.

The cost of this ultra "inclusive" performance is obscene, given widespread anxiety about costs of living atm. Still, the serfs & villeins are always up for a shindig so I imagine allegiance will be adequately demonstrated.

I just don't think people really care that much. I watched Kate and William get married and Harry and Meghan but it was always on in the background. I also watched the queens funeral and the jubilee stuff but again, in the background.

At least most of those events involve something we are familiar with - marriage and death. But this is just stuff you read about in fairy tales and meaningless to most people.
