The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

I'm just glad that no one I know seems to care.

Although one of my neighbours has put a massive (like, the size of person) poster of Harry Styles' face in her window with a little union jack in one corner, which makes me smile.

Cadburysucks · 02/05/2023 17:09

Many aren’t in the mood for this. The country is on its knees after covid/Brexit roads full of potholes, not putting heating on, lack of money to buy basic food which has gone up. Strikes, not many people have spare money for any celebration.

Arginalia · 02/05/2023 17:12

It's just not value for money. It's costing at least £100 million and we're getting at most 8 hours of actual events one can watch.

@Roussette

I hadn't even thought of that !

I wish I could find the article that set out the humungous costs of this.

No, I think it's because it's such a huge display of wealth in the middle of a cost of living crisis.

The queen's funeral was such a huge event as it had a sense of the end of an era which can never be reclaimed - and also because she was a figure from an age that promoted certain values that have far less currency now - the Empire/Commonwealth, duty, class hierarchies etc.

Charles - with tampongate, the nastiness over Diana, the mess of Harry and William etc. - just hasn't ever shown the same stoicism and sense of duty as the queen did - and yet he wants this massive show of magnificence as if he's something special.

Arginalia · 02/05/2023 17:24

Having it not on the Bank Holiday is also stupid. I know several people who work Saturdays so won't see it, but won't be working on the Bank Holiday. They should have had Friday 12th May as the Coronation and a Bank Holiday.

As we know only the Uk 'royals' insist on a coronation.
Literally involving god and saying he's given them the nod . The arrogance of it

I know. Arrogance, grandiosity, and superiority isn't a good look anymore. In fact it's associated with narcissism and we are wised up to narcissism and we know it's not something we value and aspire to. Equality - the sharing of power and open honest communication is the future.

great points and I hope you are right @Inkanta !

bunnyrabbitsandbutterflies · 02/05/2023 17:41

I don't care how gorgeous they may look. That Camilla woman will always be the trollop that slept with a married man and Charles will always be the one without enough backbone to stand up to his mother.

Don't get me started on the finances whilst people near me are queuing up outside a food bank.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 02/05/2023 17:41

ditalina your dad is so right. It's a dreadful anthem, lyrics only about the Christian god, saving the current monarch, and if you care to go beyond the first couple of verses, mentioning crushing the rebellious Scots or some such.

The tune is dire, a miserable dirge.

We need a new anthem with lyrics about the country and no mention of the monarch or any sort of god.

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 17:44

In real terms Charles Coronation costs more than Elizabeths. And yet he claims he is slimming down the Monarchy. It is a total lie.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/05/2023 17:46

In my east midlands city the council created a list of where the street parties are happening and there are precisely two on it
Admittedly this works for me as a republican, but even I thought there'd be more people planning events and such

Hardly any bunting to be seen either ...

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 17:51

I have been surprised at the lack of bunting. I drove through one small village full of flags and bunting, but I have seen very little anywhere else.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 02/05/2023 17:53

One street in our town has lots of bunting. Made by underpaid factory workers in China, no doubt.

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 17:55

None of this bodes well for Charles. The Coronation should be his peak of popularity. Instead the national mood is meh.

BebbanburgIsMine · 02/05/2023 17:55

I'm in NE Scotland and I'm looking forward to it!
I'm not a Rangers fan (or of any football teams)!

Also I don't live in Royal Deeside, I've used food banks in the past, sat in a house without heating or hot water many a time, had to cut up things like chicken nuggets to make sure my DDs had something to eat.

I like all the pomp and pageantry involved in events like these, it's escapism, and beautiful to watch.

DD2 and I are going to Asda to get party/buffet type food (DDs idea) and I've invited a friend to join us. We're going to enjoy it.

Arginalia · 02/05/2023 17:56

There's a fair amount of bunting down my way. We canny northerners saved it from the Platinum Jubilee😃

hotpotlover · 02/05/2023 17:57

In the unfortunate case of Charles dying next year (bad things can happen at that age unfortunately), we will probably have another coronation for 250 million Euros next year

yawn

I personally don’t give a fuck what any of them look like. I don’t give a fuck about any of the royal family apart from how much they cost the British public.

That’s the main thing l give a fuck about.

adarkbarking · 02/05/2023 18:07

Some people (me) just don't care, and wouldn't care any more if they were 30 and attractive.

I haven't noticed any interest at all where I live.

AskMeMore · 02/05/2023 18:07

The Queen did not look like Angelina Jolie but attracted a great deal of public affection.

Kvetching · 02/05/2023 18:11

No bunting in my little village. Quite surprising as the committee are trying to force a naff village green celebration (where you are required to bring your own chairs/food/drinks and crown) on us.

defi · 02/05/2023 18:16

I just can't get excited about a 70 odd year old billionaire being paraded around like a prize turkey. They're human but have been born into privilege. I don't get the need to celebrate this.

Topseyt123 · 02/05/2023 18:22

I agree with the criticism of the national anthem. It is an utter dirge as well as being very self congratulatory too, which is why monarchs themselves don't sing it. The Queen was never seen to, and I don't think Charles has since becoming King (unless I have missed it, which is possible). It's quite jingoistic and bloodthirsty too in its original historical form, which is why most of its verses bar the first couple are no longer in use.

Charles might go up slightly in my estimation if he would agree to change it (although what to then becomes the question). He won't though. But we can dream.

stillavid · 02/05/2023 18:32

I agree with @Roussette that the monarchs should basically retire at pension age.

I think controversially that a lot of the issues now with errant spares is due to the Queen not being on top of this stuff for the last 20-30 years.

I will watch though - just to see the fashion and jewels and awkward body language.

Maybe people don’t care because they simply don’t give a fuck?

It's certainly this for me.

It's grotesque pomp and ceremony while people can't feed/heat themselves and their families. More food banks than McDonald's (I think it was, could be mistaken for Starbucks or whatever).

It's in very bad taste.
