The royal family

The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

@Boudicasbeard
Weak

A different view on 1000 laws which apply to rest of us but not them?
Their employees who experience discrimination can't take a case because they excluded themselves from equality legislation

'Why is debate about the Monarchy so feared on here?'

Nothing to fear about 'debate', but the sheer volume of derisive insults aimed at those who don't perceive getting rid of the monarchy as the panacea of all things doesn't lead to debate, it leads to entrenchment.

There have been an avalanche of derogatory comments today about anyone even remotely enthusiastic about the coronation. Forelock tugging peasants, embarrassingly dim, prejudiced bigots, the coronation was a 'sub par, banal performance' etc etc etc

All that's going to happen is yet another polarisation of society a la Brexit/Scottish Independence.

Good job I haven't used any of those terms then!

I've read them twice in your post and can confirm not one was used by me.

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:34

@Boudicasbeard so first you argue they have no power and then accept they have power.
There is no other organisation in the UK apart from the Monarchy exempt from so many laws. From the equality act for staff to wildlife protections that do not apply to land they own. It is purely about protecting their interests.

Boudicasbeard · 06/05/2023 21:35

I have no problem with it. Works well generally as a system. I have yet to see a system of government that doesn’t have flaws. So I don’t think the upheaval of abolishing it and making a change would be worth it in the long run.

But that is my opinion.

I also think that I wouldn’t trust politicians to hold in trust everything the royal family looks after for us - estates, art collections etc. It would be sold off in dribs and drabs to the Uber wealthy and we’d never see a penny. Anyone who think that we could kick them out and house single parent families in Buckingham Palace lives in cloud cuckoo land. It would be a 5 star hotel- sold to a developer (obviously a good mate of the government like Michelle Moane).

I didn't say they were. But then it's not all about you, is it. Or maybe it is........

@AskMeMore I never said that they don’t have power. I just pointed out that they can’t make changes to a bill that has been passed by Parliament. Obviously they might lobby on issues- but we all have that right.

Boudicasbeard · 06/05/2023 21:38

I wish that would work.

My Tory MP doesn't reply to emails. The one I wrote in the last year I sent twice. I then reported him to CCHQ to get a reply.

Yes, I know I can vote.

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:39

@Coxspurplepippin you said that earlier and were only able to provide a link to one comment when asked. It is your standard thing to say at the moment when you can't answer the facts.
So the Royal Family have exemptions from hundreds of law. Do you really think the equality act should not apply to their staff? That the Royals should be able to decide not to have black people in any senior positions if that is their wish?
Or that when rare birds have been shot and the shot came from the Royals estate it could not be properly investigated because permission had not been given to enter the estate - anyone else authorities can simply enter.
Or that tenants of the Royal Family do not have the same legal protections as other tenants as the Royal Family are exempt from many relevant laws?

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:41

@Boudicasbeard Not true. I can not have a private meeting every week with the Prime Minister so I can lobby for my interests.

Boudicasbeard · 06/05/2023 21:42

@Roussette Join your local branch and flyer. I have and it helps to feel that you are doing something. My MP (an odious career Tory) is immovable. But leafleting against him
makes me feel better.

I’ve also written to other MPs in the past and also the PM and also Keir Starmer. It does take persistence. You can book to see them in surgery too- which is more difficult for them to avoid.

But the monarch has no control over this. They can’t even vote. They work with the government of the day as best they can. Blaming the king for austerity and the economy is like blaming a passenger for the driver’s bad driving.

Boudicasbeard · 06/05/2023 21:43

@AskMeMore But you can write to them. You can write to your MP- any MP really. You have a whole raft of choices to make your voice heard.

My MP has not had a constituency office ever and has been in post for 30 fucking years.

He has no social media.

He was voted 650th out of 650 for lack of engagement and transparency with his constituency in 2019.

No hope.

@Novella4 Why resort to insults?

Can you show where she has posted insults? I have scrolled back 4 pages and novella has not posted any insults.
If you do not reply I will report your comment for harassment of Novella.

AskMeMore · 06/05/2023 21:48

@Boudicasbeard Please do not pretend that writing a letter to your MP that gets a standard reply, is in the same league as a private weekly meeting with the Prime Minister where you can lobby for your families interests.

Coxspurplepippin · 06/05/2023 21:48

AskMeMore, I don't have the time or the subscription to search for stuff to satisfy your demands. It's there. I know. I've been on the receiving end of some of it

There is a 'new' poster who has been particularly vociferous over the last few hours - I'm not sure if it's ok to state the posters name but a few examples

Post at 19.59 and 20.59 on the William should have made more of an effort thread. Just for starters.

I don't think it's anything to do with their looks or age.
I mean, the Queen was popular and visibly old.
I think Charles and Camilla aren't popular because people still remember what they did to Diana

@Coxspurplepippin Ah! You mean posters being critical of the Royal Family. Maybe they should be arrested?

Coxspurplepippin · 06/05/2023 21:53

No, I mean posters being derogatory towards people who have a different view/opinion.

I know all about that. In spades.
