The royal family

Part 2: The Press & The Royals a discussion

Whaeanui · 27/04/2023 14:52

Following on from this thread: Part 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_royal_family/4786923-the-press-the-royals-a-discussion?page=1

As we know, the press often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. They have also hacked private communications, with cases ongoing. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch-although not always.

For discussion: do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media, and how can they achieve that? How will previous and current legal proceedings alter the relationship?
Please do not intentionally derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular family members or if they deserve it. I would really like to continue this discussion on how the royal family and the press interact, as above.

The Press & The Royals: a discussion | Mumsnet

@MrsMaxDeWinter You say 'a memo'... do you mean you are in a group that receives memos? 🤔. You do know that breaks talk guidelines?

No. I mean that you have spent a lot of time on various threads telling others you are ignoring me, and yet here you are, tagging me endlessly, so I am wondering if you sent a memo that I missed.

ancientgran · 14/05/2023 11:47

Whaeanui · 14/05/2023 11:39

@ancientgran may I interject to recommend the river cottage dandelion jelly? It’s not theirs it’s Pam the jam lady’s recipe, they have ann episode from long ago on it but it’s also online somewhere. My DH & I are foragers but you obviously don’t need to go far for dandelions.

I completely misunderstood the start of that, I thought you were giving me a surefire weed killer recipe. I suppose if sod's law applies if I find a use for them they might stop growing? I can't quite imagine dandelion jelly but I'll have a look at the recipe if I can find it.

I wish I could love dandelions, I have lots of lovely wild flowers in my garden and afterall that is what dandelions are. I love most of them but for some reason dandelions annoy me. I don't think I should have started the war really as I think they will win and it is a waste of time.

notanotheroneagain · 14/05/2023 11:49

ancientgran · 14/05/2023 11:34

That doesn't sound fun but I think you underestimate my dandelions. I think they are planning on taking over the world. At the start of lockdown, so over 3 years ago, I decided I was going to defeat them but honestly they are worse than ever. I think they have mutated and weedkiller is like nectar to them, I've taken to digging them out which isn't easy if the roots have gone deep. The lawn now looks like it has been attacked by moles. I am going out again to start another battle even if it looks like they are winning the war.

Not a big gardener here.
But a hack. If you can isolate your weeds from your proper plants you want to keep - say they are growing through your driveway or edges etc. You pour boiling water on them. Used it at my parents, and it works.

I feel for you. Good luck 🤗

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/05/2023 11:51

I do wonder ... if Harry wasn't involved in this ongoing case, whether posters on here would be applauding it?

Personally yes; I even applaud it with him involved, because I genuinely want to know what's happened, whether there's any truth in "practices have changed" and the rest

I just regret that so much reporting's about one claimant who's proved in other areas to be an unreliable (though that doesn't guarantee he's unreliable on this one too) and wish we could hear a bit more about all the others

I also agree with Whaeanui that the use of alleged MH issues to discredit people is a disgrace, but can't help noticing that it's also frequently used as an excuse when things don't go their way - as in online diagnosis of his trauma relating to Diana's death, etc, etc.

Sympathy! , my weeds are like triffids , the more I remove the more I have!
But the real villain is the bloody passion flower, it's strangled all my climbers and despite being removed twice it's still coming back!!

I'm not alone then. Do passion flowers grow fast? I have building going on behind my house and I've had a new 2 metre fence with lattice on top and I want to grow something quickly to help screen the horror that is going on. I'm not what you'd call a gardener so a fast growing climber is what I need.

Sorry off topic but I am desperate.

jeffgoldblum · 14/05/2023 11:57

@ancientgran , yes very fast!! , but don't go there! I've only had flowers once and the last few years have had passion fruit!
And it's not edible fruit, so you end up with it falling everywhere and having to pick it up because it can be toxic to pets and attracts wasps!
Honestly it's worse than the ivy that had to be removed from my brick work!

Doesn't sound like the answer then. I'm sick of looking at yellow diggers and cranes, so sad to see the fields disappear.

polkadotdalmation · 14/05/2023 12:14

@MrsMaxDeWinter So far this am I've had two boxes ticked. Been told I'm 'angry' (in a line with 'hater' I'd say), now your telling me I'm here all the time when I've posted about a dozen posts out of a total of 500. There are a few more to go so I'll wait for the big one.

However. Weeds! DH used to keep bees and says dandelions are the first food when they wake up/hatch/grow. Whatever. I never paid attention. So the huge crop this year are good (🤔). Boiling water trick. Yes. I do that on the patio for the weeds.

Having a cup of coffee and psyching myself up for the dead mice and mice dropping and my decided ick feeling ...

jeffgoldblum · 14/05/2023 12:21

@ancientgran , I'm sorry that sounds awful! , I'm not an experienced gardener either so don't know what to recommend?
I have found that anything that grows fast tends to grow out of control though!
Have you considered those planters with trellis attached at the back? , some are quite tall and would screen the area until the plants can establish?

This is one of the places I’m watching for the court proceedings @notanotheroneagain which appears to include a bit more than others. I was also reading the itv correspondent I already posted and read daily articles on the Guardian, BBC etc

jeffgoldblum · 14/05/2023 12:26

@polkadotdalmation , my old shed had to be emptied and pulled down last week !
10 years of me putting old kitchen gadgets and crap in! , it was falling down!
Dh took 10 trips to the recycling centre for the contents alone, apparently it was full of mice droppings and they had eaten things, he did it as it was also full of giant spiders ( and I'm deathly afraid 😱 ) , oddly he didn't see a single mouse though!

Will definitely look at this. Did follow Guardian and BBC summaries. Been a bit behind with the news lately.

That is good to hear. There is a lot about other claimants out there, but of course Harry and his claim gathers more attention on here. I read about Sadie Frost and Nikki Sanderson in particular.

I would like to know from other posts whether they would be applauding the claimants in this case if Harry wasn't involved? Because quite a few think it is a waste of time, and I wonder if that's because Harry is one of them.

You're the only one who's answered!

@Whaeanui

I am reading a lot about the phenomenon of "shared hatred" of a common object. I am seeing it this on thread, with people more angry at Harry taking on an unscrupulous press than they are about the unscrupulous press.

If he cured cancer tomorrow he would be blamed for all the previous cancer deaths because why didn't he do it sooner.😆

more angry at Harry taking on an unscrupulous press than they are about the unscrupulous press.

Mind blowing to see. I do not understand how people cannot seperate the two.

4plusthehound · 14/05/2023 16:00

polkadotdalmation · 14/05/2023 10:52

@MrsMaxDeWinter No.

No one here has any support whatsoever for phone hacking or any unscrupulous behaviour by the press. No one has said anything remotely supporting it.

By the same token many people dislike Harry's behaviour. His hypocrisy, his lack of concern for other people, his utter disregard for other people's privacy and so on.

Do not conflate the two.

By the same token many people dislike Harry's behaviour. His hypocrisy, his lack of concern for other people, his utter disregard for other people's privacy and so on.

I see this debate for the exact opposite side to you.

I do not see him as a hypocrite. In fact I see him as being an activist and a concerned citzen who has the courage to put his money where his mouth is (injured war veterans, mental health and this issue). Same as Hugh Grant actually.

And I am very surprised by that as a few years ago I was on "your side".

He is bloody impressive. A soldier by nature it would seem.

Roussette · 14/05/2023 16:03

@4plusthehound

Totally agree. I was quite the Royalist at one point a long time ago. But times have changed, too much has happened, too much opaqueness, the RF not moving forward, Andrew, H&M and how that all happened etc.

Totally agree on Harry. I think he's brave too. Foolish at times, yes. But on the whole brave.

If you want to understand why the Royal Family is so keen for accommodation with the press, look no further than this projectile malice from Camilla Long in Rupert Murdoch's Times newspaper.

As a photo, it was extraordinary. A lightly powdered, slightly greying collection of dusty, crusting royals, like the frozen figures on an ashen wedding cake

Never mind whether the group was “too white” or not; it was certainly too old. I do wonder if this collection of aged and remote, unfamiliar relics in their panto robes (average age: 60) is what Charles had in mind when he imperiously let it be known he favoured a “slimmed-down monarchy”.

Did it at any point occur to him, when he was running a fat, bejewelled finger down the family tree, that, far from having the luxury of slimming things down himself, he would find that it had, by the time he got to it, drastically self-slimmed to the point of extinction?

Few people who watched last weekend can have been in any doubt: this was truly a bizarre, once-in-a-lifetime circus of swords and royal girdles. Not many people had ever seen a coronation: what, exactly, is it? Is it a wedding, a celebration, a funeral? It defied classification. My feeling was: funeral

It won’t do, this uninspiring, threadbare, wheezing collection of corpses.

One week on, I’m wondering if they shouldn’t be pushing for his abdication, before his vision for the monarchy, if there is one, becomes too gnarly, too tired, too moany, too dull.

Wowzah, this is harsh beyond belief. @Whaeanui @Roussette @Inkanta @Maireas

Separately, Sarah Vine has now directed her special venom away from Harry and Meghan towards the Wales.

And also in the Times, William is reported as already plotting his coronation, with reports that he plans to do it better. So horribly tacky from the media.

What a horrible life. They build you up only to bring you crashing down.

Not sure why my post was hidden, but will try again.

This article by Camilla Long in The Times goes a long way to explaining why the Royal Family tries so hard to have an accommodation with the press. It is utterly malicious and brutally harsh, featuring such bon mots as:

It won’t do, this uninspiring, threadbare, wheezing collection of corpses.
