The royal family

Part 2: The Press & The Royals a discussion

Following on from this thread: Part 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_royal_family/4786923-the-press-the-royals-a-discussion?page=1

As we know, the press often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. They have also hacked private communications, with cases ongoing. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch-although not always.

For discussion: do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media, and how can they achieve that? How will previous and current legal proceedings alter the relationship?
Please do not intentionally derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular family members or if they deserve it. I would really like to continue this discussion on how the royal family and the press interact, as above.

The Press & The Royals: a discussion | Mumsnet

As we were just having a great discussion on this topic I’m going to try again to continue it on a thread of its own. A previous thread highlighted tw...

That post doesn’t sound angry in the slightest.

@polkadotdalmation - you’re post reads perfectly fine

All PolkaDalmatiins posts this morning about Harry sound angry.

polkadotdalmation · 14/05/2023 10:58

@ancientgran You're not allowed to say that as it breaks talk guidelines. You and I will both get deleted, but we will both have seen and witnessed, that it is indeed what is happening.

Whaeanui · 14/05/2023 10:59

I think it would carry more weight here if the person complaining about a childish retort didn’t have 3 posts deleted from this thread in quick succession for personally attacking contributors here.

Harry’s barrister, David Sherborne, told the court that the prince understood why the royal family had agreed to a deal: “If it needs to be said – and apparently it does – this is no criticism of the Queen or his family, and he accepted it, because he had to.”

Thanks for including this quote, that was clearly deliberately left out by a erm 'legal expect' of the RF threads.

Well the sun has finally appeared so I'm off to do some gardening!

Whaeanui · 14/05/2023 11:00

@notanotheroneagain you’re welcome. Some media articles don’t include all of what was said or statements submitted, they can be a bit selective, I wonder why?

@Inkanta Do you not think 'you sound angry' is rather a childish retort to someone's valid points in an argument.

If your boss was giving you feedback on a job you didn't do particularly well, would you put your side or would you say 'you sound angry'?

Not arguing with you. Tone it down.

You said ‘Harry supporters’, which I clearly am regarding the press, which is what we are discussing. Perhaps you should be more specific if you aren’t talking about people here.

This may shock you but I don't follow your posts, for all I know you have defended William where appropriate or you are someone who is supportive of Harry but are quite prepared to see there are faults on both sides.

I'm not on the royal boards very often but I have said or agreed with positive and negative things about Harry and the RF. Some of us can do that, I have no idea if you can or if you are one of the more extreme followers.

Great idea! Gardening is an excellent way to work off pent up aggression. Enjoy!

It won’t. Because the day of reckoning was years ago. We have people like the departed Max Mosley and Sienna Miller to thank for that and Hugh Grant etc. the practices have changed. This seems to be wanting a pound of flesh which is fine but the practices have changed. And all those who told their stories and yes took settlements (like Harry’s brother) are to thank for that.

Harry is one of many - the day of reckoning is not over. Not when you didn’t have a Leveson 2 examining the press police link up and not when these cases are still happening. And although the people who took settlements received compensation for themselves all that has done is to embolden the media groups - most industries indeed have liability insurance - but the eye watering amounts that they are covered for now because this is now seen as the cost of doing business surely shouldn’t be seen as normal.

Whaeanui · 14/05/2023 11:02

@ancientgran you didn’t say extreme. You said Harry supporters while on a thread I’m on so I assumed you were reading what we have all contributed. Maybe a better phrase would be ‘some Harry supporters’ if you don’t want to include the ones you’re currently in discussion with.

Nice to have it cleared up.

I've just come in from gardening. The weeds are going mad here particularly the dandelions.

Whaeanui · 14/05/2023 09:26

@AuroraCake I don’t think you or I can speak to what he is capable of or what’s best for him. He’s got a legal team and therapists around him and I think he and his family will know what he’s capable of better than we can. People who have or have had mental health struggles are much more capable when they’ve had therapy and the right support. I wasn’t capable of leaving my house at one point, I would have hated anyone saying it’s best for me to stay home forever because I once struggled.

That mental health issue definitely gets inflated and weaponised against Harry specifically when it comes to the RF.

Maybe because he is one of the few in that family that has accepted it and made the effort to address it.

This is a shame.

I did start the post by talking about extremes and said lots of us can see both sides. If you can see both sides I don't know why it would have offended you.

Whaeanui · 14/05/2023 11:16

Yes you said both sides are extreme. We can leave it now it’s cleared up.

@MrsMaxDeWinter You say 'a memo'... do you mean you are in a group that receives memos? 🤔. You do know that breaks talk guidelines?

notanotheroneagain · 14/05/2023 11:23

How anyone can think the press morals and coverage has changed since these hacks and Levinson is beyond me.

Look at all the footballer racism, gaslighting about migration etc.

It's a good think cases like this can be made, so they don't rest on their laurels about lying and just getting away with it.

And people think they are not being influenced.

@ancientgran Well it's actually cleaning out the garage and trying to turf out all the mice that have been hibernating there! My favourite job!! Weeds are easy in comparison 🤣

I must read them up, I don't think I ever have but I don't say anything to deliberately upset anyone and thought it was OK if we are honest. Hey ho, maybe I will go away and read them.

That doesn't sound fun but I think you underestimate my dandelions. I think they are planning on taking over the world. At the start of lockdown, so over 3 years ago, I decided I was going to defeat them but honestly they are worse than ever. I think they have mutated and weedkiller is like nectar to them, I've taken to digging them out which isn't easy if the roots have gone deep. The lawn now looks like it has been attacked by moles. I am going out again to start another battle even if it looks like they are winning the war.

Whaeanui · 14/05/2023 11:39

@ancientgran may I interject to recommend the river cottage dandelion jelly? It’s not theirs it’s Pam the jam lady’s recipe, they have ann episode from long ago on it but it’s also online somewhere. My DH & I are foragers but you obviously don’t need to go far for dandelions.

Sympathy! , my weeds are like triffids , the more I remove the more I have!
But the real villain is the bloody passion flower, it's strangled all my climbers and despite being removed twice it's still coming back!!
