The royal family

Part 2: The Press & The Royals a discussion

Whaeanui · 27/04/2023 14:52

Following on from this thread: Part 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_royal_family/4786923-the-press-the-royals-a-discussion?page=1

As we know, the press often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. They have also hacked private communications, with cases ongoing. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch-although not always.

For discussion: do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media, and how can they achieve that? How will previous and current legal proceedings alter the relationship?
Please do not intentionally derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular family members or if they deserve it. I would really like to continue this discussion on how the royal family and the press interact, as above.

The Press & The Royals: a discussion | Mumsnet

As we were just having a great discussion on this topic I’m going to try again to continue it on a thread of its own. A previous thread highlighted tw...

Whatever the outcome of this courtcase I just like how everything is coming out in the open

You and me both, Inkanta, except I wouldn't quite say "everything"

If they're all prepared to let the whole lot come out I'll be most surprised, which is why I honestly don't see Harry entering a witness box (and I'm fully prepared to be wrong on that)

Roussette · 12/05/2023 10:09

Thanks notanotheroneagain I have just retweeted that about Morgan. I hope this brings him down.

No career in US for him if so. They didn't want him either.

Whaeanui · 12/05/2023 10:09

Yes thanks @notanotheroneagain but it doesn’t say briefed, it says came from and in one instance they claim, yet to see all details, that it came from a statement about him from the palace. So they could mean they got it from the palace statements, or the royals interviews. We will see what they mean in due course.

Thank you, I've had some bad news yesterday (an old friend died) and some worrying news about a close family member this morning so I'm feeling more vulnerable than I normally would but it does feel like bullying.

I recommend a short break from MN royal boards.💐

Iwasafool · 12/05/2023 10:12

notanotheroneagain · 12/05/2023 10:08

No, no, no.

It's the press themselves saying they were getting briefings from the palace itself. They said that in court.
I'm surprised you didn't see this. It's all over the coverage and news !

That could be referring to what was in The Telegraph. Harry gave the information about his 18th so that came from a member of the family. His mother said he was taking the break up of his parents marriage badly, again a member of the family. Royal press office saying he had broken his thumb.

If that's what they meant it isn't very damning. If it's someone in the office taking a backhander from PM then that is damning but I don't think it is clear yet. Maybe it will be clarified today.

You are probably right, I don't look at them very often but I've been getting over a nasty virus (might be covid but I don't have any tests) so I'm a bit bored. I think I might download a book onto my kindle and have a read. Do you think it is too early for a slice of cake with a cup of tea while I read?

Mumsnut · 12/05/2023 10:17

Never too early!

You are so right, book bought, tea made and a nice (large) slice of red velvet.

Mumsnut · 12/05/2023 10:35

Damn

Which Morgan thing, the video posted? Does he have a career in the US? I know he had a show at some point. Murdoch will have him somewhere.

Yes. He was host of CNNs flagship show to replace Larry King. And was on America's Got Talent. Ratings tanked and they got rid of him.

Whaeanui · 12/05/2023 11:14

@Roussette thanks for the reminder. I’m just watching a tik tok about all the connections!

People like Piers Morgan have been able to carry on unabated with hate talk in all sorts of ways, particularly about H&M.

There needs to come a day of reckoning.
It happened with Katie Hopkins, his turn now.

She was the worst and I once got over 4,000 likes and retweets for something I said to her, my finest moment, sad git I am !

Whaeanui · 12/05/2023 11:19

Well Katie Hipkins got herself in a lot of trouble and seems to have rapidly declined with her media/tv career, or maybe I just haven’t seen her. Thank goodness.

Not much from this morning but the defence has started,

— We’re back from the morning break, and Andrew Green KC has begun his opening speech.
He is starting off with the generic case and then will move onto the limitation argument – this is what most of MGN’s defense rests on: that the claims have been brought too late.
The Limitation Act of 1980 means that there is a statutory limit of six years on bringing claims like this, however, there are exceptions to this rule.
If the claimants can prove that MGN tried to conceal wrongdoing, they still have a case.Written arguments submitted to the court have called the claimant’s pleading “repetitive and confusing”.

Which claimant, Whaeanui? There are after all more people than just Harry involved in the claim and I'd hope we're not going to hear only about his

@MrsMaxDeWinter

The problem with that article is that it doesn’t put the tweets in context.

For example is it 50% or .5% of his total tweets. If somethings lacks something so fundamental it makes me think adding it would contradict the authors stance. That’s my suspicious mind perhaps though

I dislike Piers Morgan, but I never read anything he writes or watch anything he’s done. he seems a rather pompous arsehole, but that’s more formed from reading these threads

Whaeanui · 12/05/2023 13:14

@Puzzledandpissedoff I don’t know who they were referring to sorry, it’s from a news update. Sorry I’ve been running around catching someone else’s lambs holding up traffic! Some mean person cut the fence! So I will go see if I can grab more shortly

@Howsimplywonderful

You clearly have not been following the story. There is nothing normal, or journalistic, about the way Piers talks about her.

If every person that was ghosted reacted this way, we would be living in the most hostile society imaginable. This isn’t investigative journalism or holding someone to account, its nastiness disguised as freedom of speech.

Lambs or updates?! 😂

As far as Morgan, he was totally obsessed with Meghan, like the biggest superfan ever, when she was in Suits. I wish I'd kept the montage of his tweets about her. It was embarrassing. Literally daily saying how wonderful she was, what a talented actress she was, how beautiful she looked in this scene, in that scene, how he was hoping to come over and watch a screening of Suits. It was endless. At that point it was very stalkery but in a fan way.
Then it went tits up. He deleted all of those tweets praising her and turned on the hate.

Roussette · 12/05/2023 13:28

As far as proportion of his tweets, he does tweet a lot about football. Then of course there's his tweets knocking Emma Radecanu and Simone Byles and Morhad Andouni, the runner.
I can't imagine what all these people have in common can you?

derxa · 12/05/2023 13:28

Lambs? 😀
