The royal family

Part 2: The Press & The Royals a discussion

Following on from this thread: Part 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_royal_family/4786923-the-press-the-royals-a-discussion?page=1

As we know, the press often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. They have also hacked private communications, with cases ongoing. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch-although not always.

For discussion: do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media, and how can they achieve that? How will previous and current legal proceedings alter the relationship?
Please do not intentionally derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular family members or if they deserve it. I would really like to continue this discussion on how the royal family and the press interact, as above.

The Press & The Royals: a discussion | Mumsnet

As we were just having a great discussion on this topic I’m going to try again to continue it on a thread of its own. A previous thread highlighted tw...

As far as proportion of his tweets, he does tweet a lot about football. Then of course there's his tweets knocking Emma Radecanu and Simone Byles and Morhad Andouni, the runner.
I can't imagine what all these people have in common can you?

I think he's reserving his bile for Harry atm. He hasn't mentioned those other women for months and years.

Whaeanui · 12/05/2023 13:37

Cheers @MrsMaxDeWinter I’ll have a read now!

Course he is! Harry along with other very high profile people are holding his feet to the fire as far as phone hacking and underhand practices, of which he is part!

Whaeanui · 12/05/2023 13:44

Sorry everyone for not making sense or responding! I was both catching lambs and trying to find the updates again! There’s one part of the farmers fence that’s by busy traffic and the farmer doesn’t live near this land so we get all the people driving by coming to our house! Then I had to find my cats who love to make friends with all the animals in the fields- there’s horses too!

Ok back to the thread! I find Morgan genuinely creepy and yes he was a mega fan and then turned. I don’t think he acts in a professional way at all, to put it mildly, but I can imagine it’s scary to have lots of old men obsessed with you in this way. Do we really need journalists like him? I used to read The Independent when I got to this country and it was so good back then, proper news and journalism. I understand they should cover the royals, and yes really dig into things that affect us like the money side and if they interfere with politics etc but I think he epitomises when it goes too far.

And here is a great article featuring his clear issues with women.

The JK stuff still makes me laugh.

Enjoyable to read MrsDeWinter. Piers unsuccessfully trying to control what these women do and say. They all checked him brilliantly. God he’s horrible.

No, no, no.

It's the press themselves saying they were getting briefings from the palace itself. They said that in court.
I'm surprised you didn't see this. It's all over the coverage and news !

Some of the briefings also came from Harry himself, according to the Mirror.

polkadotdalmation · 13/05/2023 23:53

Define 'briefings'.

How absurd.

An interview is not briefing.

Exactly, and the Mirror stated in their defence that some of the stories that Harry claims were illegally obtained actually came from himself or his own PR who were trying to rehabilitate his image due to his controversies. So it seems the idiot prince really can’t even remember the stories he'd been telling the media in the past.

Calling him an 'idiot prince' doesn't make your post any better.
His legal team scored a bit of an own goal with a tiny part of the case. The rest of the allegations about what he went through are totally true. However, it is only a couple of days into a 7 week trial so we will have to see won't we?

I am full of admiration for him and all the others involved in this case, what some of the have been put through by the media with underhand practices from burglary to phone hacking... is absolutely horrendous. Well done them all for holding the MNG's feet to the fire. It will benefit everyone in the long run.

It won’t. Because the day of reckoning was years ago. We have people like the departed Max Mosley and Sienna Miller to thank for that and Hugh Grant etc. the practices have changed. This seems to be wanting a pound of flesh which is fine but the practices have changed. And all those who told their stories and yes took settlements (like Harry’s brother) are to thank for that.

So Baronness Lawrence is just after a pound of flesh?? Ditto very many others who went through hell?

Unlawful information gathering was widespread and authorised by those at the highest levels of Mirror Group Newspapers, a court has heard

Is that really necessary? To call him names? He has a legal team costing millions who really ought to have checked all of that for him because who could expect any of them to remember every interview ever done. Also, that’s what the defence claimed, we have yet to finish the trial so we will see what exactly happened as time goes on. MGN have also said as part of their defence that the claimants, not just Harry, should have suspected them anyway and realised much sooner they were engaging in unlawful activity. What kind of idiot defence is that?
Bizarre people are defending the press in all this, but I guess as long as it’s Harry who cares if they’ve done something hideous for decades huh.

Oh... and, Hugh Grant is still involved in the case. He didn't settle.

Whaeanui · 14/05/2023 08:15

t won’t. Because the day of reckoning was years ago.

It wasn’t because these particular cases haven’t been heard before. Why should only a few victims get to sue? Siena Miller actually said afterwards she would have liked to take it to trial but she couldn’t afford to. Why would you want organisations like this to get away with it? It’s unlawful phone hacking. Including of thousands of ordinary citizens who can’t afford to take them to trial. Hugh Grant has current cases of his own. The day of reckoning never really came actually. Some of the claims are for crimes alleged since Leveson 1. There are people including Hugh Grant who want a Leveson 2.

I find it sad that the case is rubbished because Harry is just one of many involved.
It will benefit everyone if underhand practices are highlighted and stopped.

Yes to this. I think of the poor guy whose wife went missing. He openly criticised more than once what the media had put him through and the lengths they went to, to write a story.

Hugh Grant did settle with a different paper in 2018

Hugh has current claims against The Sun and ANL. He is a director of Hacked Off and actively and consistently campaigns on this issue. He’s never stopped fighting for justice.

I don’t want people to get away with it but the comment was: it will benefit everyone. It won’t because the practices, apparently, no longer happen. The case is about getting compensation or getting your voice heard.

There is no one to fire and the Mirror group won’t fold.

people are entitled to compensation over what has happened to them but there is no legacy here.

AuroraCake · 14/05/2023 08:26

The media in all its forms have always been exploitative. And indeed Harry has played into that as well.

We will see won't we? Newspapers fold when they have to pay out so much they are not viable anymore.

I presume you are pleased this case is going ahead? Or not.

I think it's premature to talk of a legacy 2 days into 7 weeks of a case.
