Part 2: The Press & The Royals a discussion

Following on from this thread: Part 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_royal_family/4786923-the-press-the-royals-a-discussion?page=1

As we know, the press often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. They have also hacked private communications, with cases ongoing. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch-although not always.

For discussion: do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media, and how can they achieve that? How will previous and current legal proceedings alter the relationship?
Please do not intentionally derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular family members or if they deserve it. I would really like to continue this discussion on how the royal family and the press interact, as above.

The Press & The Royals: a discussion | Mumsnet

As we were just having a great discussion on this topic I’m going to try again to continue it on a thread of its own. A previous thread highlighted tw...

You’re the one keeping on! I didn’t raise it! Take it up with the person who did.

You were the one who raised racism and you are keeping it on, don't attack me and expect me to just take it. You responded to someone who mentioned Ghandi, you said he was racist, I responded to you. That's how discussion works, you don't automatically get the last word on everything. Why would I take up the allegations of racism with someone who didn't mention racism?

You have repeatedly called me out on a thread I started and seem to be intent on causing an argument. He was raised by another poster as an example of kindness when he made racist comments himself. I merely replied to that poster. I’m not attacking you at all. Now I’m going to politely ask you to stop this. I didn’t berate you over tk maxx comments so kindly back away from constantly policing me.

Racism is a relevant issue here, obviously. If a racist person is mentioned, I’ll point out their own racism on whatever thread I wish to.

And I will point out if their stance changed. People change.

What comments did I make about TKMaxx that I needed to be "berated" for? I thought I asked what the story was, must go back and have a look.

polkadotdalmation · 12/05/2023 09:48

My comment had nothing to do with racism so OP had no reason to mention it. My point was people in power or who want power and control feel the need to belittle others in a less powerful position than themselves in order feel power. So harry and his matron comments were an example of this. Basically it's what bullies do. And harry admitted bullying her. Disablism is as important as racism.

Iwasafool · 12/05/2023 09:50

So the sum total of my TKMaxx posts.

TKMaxx story mentioned and I asked about it, acknowledged I was being lazy and went to google it.
"Sorry I don't know about the TKMaxx story? Was Harry saying he couldn't afford clothes or PM saying he couldn't or am I missing something. Thanks if you can enlighten me.

Actually I'm being lazy. I'll go and have a google."

I go and google it, find out some details and ask if that's what it was about.
"So from what I can see Harry likes shopping in the sales at TKMaxx, TKMaxx say they don't have sales and the ghostwriter says TKMaxx are lying because of links to the then Prince Charles. Is that it?"

I think it was Rousette who confirmed that was the story and we had an exchange which was basically about me not shopping there and her loving it.

"I think I've only been in there twice, not the London one I mean our local one. It is too chaotic for me but I do know people who love it."

"The £12 dress sounds a bargain. I just can't see past the chaos, well it is chaos to me. I'm the same with carboots, DH loves them, finds some amazing bargains and I just see rubbish."

"Maybe our branch is particularly bad? Maybe I should visit a different branch when I'm in a city, our is quite small so a big city one might be better."

Not sure why you would have berated me for that.

Exactly, there was no reason for me to come back to you about racism.

I'm actually feeling bullied out of here.

They shouldn’t take his word for it. It’s not hard to check things like this these days.

No, they would't have.
They are a strong, thorough team. That law firm.

Don't rely on the press narrative.
What this means is that Harry said some things in the interview, but did not mention other minor details - which the press could have only got from hacking.

That is how Harry knew that the press could have only got that exit story from one source, because they only mentioned the surrendering of titles on only one correspondence.

Like Harry? Oh wait, he changed apparently. Like Gandhi apparently did too. 😀

Whaeanui · 12/05/2023 09:55

That was point @Serenster you know I wasn’t the one that mentioned Ghandi right? He was raised to make a dig at Harry, but he is also flawed and I pointed that out.

I won’t be engaging with anyone whose intention is to just come here to annoy or provoke me. It’s enough.

You used the wrong person to quote from a position of kindness or moral superiority. Harry is flawed. So is Ghandi. Ok.

Whatever the outcome of this courtcase I just like how everything is coming out in the open. Everything is being pulled out. That in itself is a justice of sorts. The underhand corrupt way papers operate to do a story AND the role of palace press office AND actual royal family leaking stories. Not very nice or very kind. All out there to see.

It is all coming out !

People have been dining out on calling Harry a liar. Now the papers are admitting that the palace has been briefing against him.

Some of us could see it. Now it's confirmed.

Well I guess we’ll see how each claim develops as we hear them address each others claims and defence to claims. It may be the MGN position is flawed on that one, or that it somehow wasn’t checked properly which would be a major failing on their part.

I don’t think they said briefing though. It could be they mean it came indirectly from friends they spoke to, or that their staff did. If it’s rumours from friends it’s less damning, but if from palace staff then yes you’d be inclined to think he was right.

Briefing against him is very different from letting it be known that he had glandular fever, or broke his thumb. The glandular fever thing (it was in the Telegraph a couple of days ago ) was said to have come from the Royal Family / office, but could have been as simple as a reporter ringing a Press Secretary to ask why Harry’s name had been dropped from an engagement. Or Bea mentioning it in Mahiki co e to that

Mumsnut · 12/05/2023 10:05

I do love the fact that PM is putting his own neck in the noose with all the on record blather !

Thank you, I've had some bad news yesterday (an old friend died) and some worrying news about a close family member this morning so I'm feeling more vulnerable than I normally would but it does feel like bullying.

No, no, no.

It's the press themselves saying they were getting briefings from the palace itself. They said that in court.
I'm surprised you didn't see this. It's all over the coverage and news !

Maybe we should start a thread about actually discussing it not just getting a lecture from one perspective.
