The royal family

Part 2: The Press & The Royals a discussion

Following on from this thread: Part 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_royal_family/4786923-the-press-the-royals-a-discussion?page=1

As we know, the press often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. They have also hacked private communications, with cases ongoing. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch-although not always.

For discussion: do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media, and how can they achieve that? How will previous and current legal proceedings alter the relationship?
Please do not intentionally derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular family members or if they deserve it. I would really like to continue this discussion on how the royal family and the press interact, as above.

I don't know about that. But I am sure he'll be cheered by that poll.

Poor Camilla bottoming out.

Did you ever hear the story of Steve Nott? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14431473

What an amazing story!

DuchessOfPort · 11/05/2023 16:23

that Steve Nott story is amazing.

I can’t get my head round how any of these journalists got Harry / William / Kate’s mobile numbers in the first place in order to be able to get to their voicemail. Why would they give them to anyone like that? Or to people who are so disloyal as to pass them on.

Yes it is! I agree with you about the phone numbers, I am so careful with mine and I’m nobody! I wonder why it is. Very strange. But that story is just something else, they’re just so devious.

Royal Protection police officers were involved, they were providing the tabloids with the royal family (and household staff) phone numbers for cash, if I recall correctly.

I'm just surprised they didn't wear their Crowns, that would've got the Americans in a right tailspin.

I am going to remember this when other Royals in and out the family, start appearing here there and everywhere. Mike Tindall on I'm a Celebrity, Charles has done Antiques Roadshow and Repair shop... what else is in the pipeline? Somehow I don't think it'll be Mastermind... 😁

Some of these royal attempts to connect with popular culture are a bit naff like Charles and Camilla being in Eastenders and the Queen visiting Coronation Street. But did you actually watch the Repair Shop episode? Jay Blades and Charles struck up a friendship over their love of crafts. Jay Blades was invited to the Coronation and seemed delighted. No doubt he should have thrown the invitation in the bin according to some on here. 😂

Roussette · 11/05/2023 17:02

@derxa I didn't actually watch it but given that Jay Blades had an awful start in life, it's good to hear they bonded. Incredible story about Jay.

I am now thinking that you will think I am saying about Charles and his start in life... I'm not!

Serenster · 11/05/2023 17:07

I still can't believe it hasn't been reported ? Did the BBC?

I'd imagine that's news?
I know the Windsors can censor material the BBC have - maybe not showing Charles and Camilla on American idol is part of that

I also found the American idol appearance rather cringeworthy too, but the idea that was wasn’t reported on was a bit silly as it was very widely covered, including by the BBC.

Charles and Camilla also made a brief appearance in the first semifinal of Eurovision on Tuesday night. In marketing terms I think that’s called reinforcing your brand, given they are already very much in the news for the Coronation.

Iwasafool · 11/05/2023 17:09

If they show their faces is cringe, if they don't they are lazy and waste of money. They can't win can they?

Novella4 · 11/05/2023 17:10

I don't think anyone commented on repair shop .
It would be like them appearing on countryfile

Doing a cringeworthy skit on American idol broadcast hours after their anointing at great tax payer expense is rather different !

Tacky

And no doubt part of the deal - how any singers had refused by that point ?

Serenster · 11/05/2023 17:14

Guess what, fast forward a few weeks, the York sisters are invited to a small informal gathering with friends. Most likely not told that Piers and his wife will be there. But, 'gotcha!', because here is Piers and wife waiting outside the restaurant to greet them (pap in hanging around). You have to bear in mind there was no story/court case about PM nor York sisters back then, no need for paps to be around. Nothing was happening . A random restaurant. None of them are ever a story, in general . Anyway, he is there hugging Bea, though it seems Eug was quick to spot the set up.

Sorry to spoil your fiction with the facts, but the photos taken of Beatrice hugging Piers Morgan were taken at the end of their meal when they were leaving the restaurant together. Eugenie had also been there, but was photographed leaving on her own shortly before the rest of the party came out Which included James Blunt and his wife who are longstanding friends of the York sisters too. And rather than being a set up, they were larking around and joking as they said their goodbyes on the street. (Not only was that how it was reported, but the photos show the timeline).

Rousette did at 15.17 *Charles has done Antiques Roadshow and Repair shop"

If you know for sure who was actually asked and turned the opportunity down, do let us know. Ed Sheeran specifically responded to being name dropped in this kind of allegation to say no-one ever approached him about it.

As for the singers who did, Katy Perry has been for a few years now an Ambassador for the British Asian Trust, a role which she was invited to take up by Prince Charles after they spoke about her commitment to campaigning against child labour in India (one of the aims of the Trust) And, because someone will definitely ask ( 😀 ), the Trust has other ambassadors, including Azhar Mahmood, Nihal Arthanayake, Dr Zaf Iqbal, Gurinder Chadha, Konnie Huq and James Caan. I don’t think it out of turn to say that Katy Perry has a much higher profile internationally, however. Plus probably a better back catalogue…

As for Lionel Richie, he was as a Global Ambassador and First Chairman of the Global Ambassador Group for The Prince's Trust in 2019. So headline performers and Prince Charles have a personal relationship going back a few years.

So who knows what the deals were done with them, but given both have transparent past links to Prince Charles, it’s hard to see that they needed to be robbed to take part.

And what does any of that have to do the fact that the pair of them , newly anointed Charles and Camilla appeared in American Idol ????

The day was so important that innocent protesters ( and a royalist!) were detained and denied their right to protest

Yet only hours later charles and Camilla are doing a skit on American Idol ?

Ridiculous and cheap

I can't see the connection. I haven't seen it but apparently it was prerecorded so didn't affect anything they did on the day.

Maybe it was suggested and they thought it would be fun? I mean the producers of American Idol obviously had to be happy with the idea in order for it to happen (and will doubtless have had one eye to its viral promotional potential). Could quite easily be seen as a win win.

(You sound terribly snobby, Novella! Clutching your pearls at the very thought of British Royals appearing on an American Talent Show! 🤣)

What's your objection to singing contests? I actually have a beef with the Countryfile episode because he met with Adam Henson on it. This man is not a typical farmer. He's vastly wealthy and a complete self publicist.

Iwasafool · 11/05/2023 17:34

Maybe we can agree the old saying was right, "You can't please all the people all of the time."

I think it was just naff. That's it really. And I can imagine if others in the RF but mentioning no names did this. They'd be annihilated.

Go on... I'm snobby 🤣

Novella4 · 11/05/2023 17:36

Downplay away

If the tax payer wasn't paying for it and if innocent citizens hadn't been detained lest they ruin such a precious day - you might have a point

But we were paying for it all and civil liberties were affected in case this most special of days be ruined

Bring on the pomp as you royalists say !

There's your pomp . A cringeworthy attempt at god knows what on American Idol
