(sorry, this is long..I wrote at 3am when I couldn't sleep - but then fell asleep!! So it worked to get me to sleep at least!! Now not wanting to waste the words I wrote so posting!!!)
If you were Harry .....I mean literally .... Like in the film 'Big'... If you suddenly found yourself waking up as Harry, but with your own personality, what would you do?
This is what I'd do...
Release a statement that says something along the lines of ...
"... Firstly I want to thank the USA and UK. USA for welcoming me, providing me a home for myself and family etc... Also, I owe an enormous debt to the UK. Thank you to every single person living in the UK today for funding my hugely privileged lifestyle, from my schooling at Eton, to my different homes and residence over the years, my holidays and my fame. Without you I would not have had the privileges I have. Thank you from the bottom of my heart...
Myself and Meghan decided to do something a few years ago which we couldn't have known was the right or wrong thing to do. We left the UK, my family, my friends, and the institution of the monarchy itself, in search of a new life. This doesn't mean I no longer love my country. I acknowledge and will forever be indebted to the great people of the UK. I continue to love my country and always will. I also still deeply love my family and respect whole heartedly the institution of the monarchy.
When we left the UK, Meghan and I made many mistakes and continue to do so. I am sorry we haven't always got things right. I'm sorry for those I have hurt. I wish to say sorry to my family and friends for anything I may have said that caused you harm. I also wish to say sorry to others I have hurt, not least friends and partners from my teenage years, the wonderful matron who cared for me at Eton, but about whom i wrote unfair things in my recent book. I'm sorry for my ill thought out words about the Taliban and my kill.count in my recent book, and I am sorry to have let many people down over the last 3 or 4 years, not least my own brother.
As you know, I have a strained relationship with the press. I also remain a deeply traumatised man, in whom many scars form the past still rage on. However, I am learning that my own actions over the last few months/years have been no better than those of the media I despise so much. I also understand that while I have significant parts of my mental health I need to work on, there are many others experiencing far worse.
My wife and I, and our children, have decided to take a step back from the media and public life for the foreseeable future. We have recently sold our Montecito home and have arranged to move to a smaller property, in another part of the USA where we feel we will be happier and out of the line light. Megan and I will not be making any public appearances for the next 5 years. We need to work on ourselves, our relationship, and spend some quality time with our children. You may see my name attached to some of the invictus games work.or other charitable work I will be continuing to be involved in, but I ask please that you don't detract from these causes by drawing attention to myself. I will not be appearing publically.or making any public statements or media appearances as part of this work. Megan intends to return to acting so may be recognisable in the media via her appearance in these series. However, again, we will not otherwise be appearing in the media and Megan will not be making any public appearances to promote her work or for any other reason.
We will, as we have said before, not be working in any royal capacity. This is not because we don't value the family and the institution, but we have decided, essentially, to remove ourselves from the public eye for the next 5 years, and therefore are not going to front or be part of any publicised royal event.
This is the last statement I will make publically for, as I stated, at least 5 years. Thank you for your patience, your support and all the love and support you have shown to me over the years and I apologise again, wholeheartedly, that I have let many down in recent years.
