The royal family’s popularity has continued to bounce back in the UK, following the release of Prince Harry’s bombshell book, with Prince William and Kate Middleton receiving the most support.

The royals’ positive ratings spiked in a new survey conducted by YouGov. The poll, conducted between 18 March and 20 March, asked the British public if they had a positive or negative opinion for each member of the royal family. Answers ranged from “very positive” to “very negative” to “don’t know”.The Prince of Wales had the highest rating, with 72 per cent of respondents saying that they had a “very” or “fairly” positive opinion of the royal. He was then followed by his spouse, with 70 per cent of respondents having positive opinions of the Princess of Wales.Kate Middleton’s approval rating was also tied with Queen Elizabeth II’s only daughter, Princess Anne, with 70 per cent of participants citing their positive opinions of her. King Charles trailed Anne by only a few percentage points, as 63 per cent of respondents had a positive opinion of him.Forty-eight per cent of respondents had a positive view of the King’s wife, Camilla, Queen Consort.

However, these royal family members have still seen a rise in popularity, when compared to a survey conducted by YouGuv in January, following Harry’s memoir release. Camilla, Kate, and William’s positive ratings have gone up by two percentage points, while the King’s has gone up by one point.

Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, still appear to be somewhat unpopular amongst the British public. In YouGov’s January and March poll, only 22 per cent of surveyors said they had a “very” or “fairly” positive opinion of Meghan. For Harry, 25 per cent of respondents said they had a positive opinion of him, which is a one per cent increase from the January survey.

In January, YouGov also looked at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s popularity amongst Americans, following the release of Spare. The survey found that 47 per cent of Americans have a “very or somewhat favourable” opinion of Harry, while 34 per cent have a “very or somewhat unfavourable” opinion of him.Meghan had similar results, at the time, as 44 per cent of Americans admitted to having a “very or somewhat favourable” opinion of her and 36 per cent had a “very or somewhat unfavourable” opinion of her.

YouGov’s data also found that William and Kate were the most popular British royals amongst Americans.

Do you work for Kate and William by any chance? All your posts read like their PR.

Doesn’t surprise me either.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 23/03/2023 08:48

Do they also conduct these polls across the Commonwealth, and in the overseas realms, particularly in those Caribbean nations that are on the brink of ditching Charles as Head of State?

it seems a bit odd to poll American voters about members of a Royal Family that have nothing to do with Americans while not polling those who actually have a link to it.

Why could that be, I wonder?

VixenTodd · 23/03/2023 09:14

😀 You mean the ones who are fed lies by Sussex PR and believe it 😀

MrsFinkelstein · 23/03/2023 09:24

Not really surprising tbh. The RF are still popular and supported by a majority of the GBP. Looking at trends over the years, it does fluctuate but usually stabilises.

I don't think non-Brits realise how ingrained in the national psyche the RF are. We may complain about them, but we don't really want them to go away.

They are most popular when they just keep their heads down and get on with the job - which they have been overall.

Wealthy privileged people whinging about how unfair their life has been is never really viewed well. Harry misunderstood his popularity with the GBP.

Teatime55 · 23/03/2023 09:25

The queen was correct about not reacting, it’s exactly what people want out of the royal family.

Harry is trying to cross over to being a ‘celebrity’ but he has nothing to offer but negative stories.

Do people not realise commonwealth countries can ditch the monarchy at any time in the last 50 + years? Do people not realise the commonwealth is a massive cooperative based mainly on trade? Do people not realise the commonwealth countries do not pay a penny in tax to the crown or the Uk government?

Until 2021 the Uk gave aid to commonwealth countries to the tune of £1 billion. In 2021 it was cut by half to £500 million.

So why are they still part of the commonwealth? Financial benefits. No more and no less.

I suspect that the polls would be poor across the board for the entire RF in the Carribean. I think the polling might reflect the premise that H&M went to the US for celebrity hence this is measuring how they might perform against that metric.

Regardless - the RF should be pleased that things are looking positive in terms of public opinion which is the thing they need to maintain the longevity of the institution.

Samcro · 23/03/2023 09:35

who do they poll? I always wonder as I have never known anyone who has been "polled"

YouGov is a based on volunteers who participate in surveys as little or often as they want. I am a volunteer and do a survey about once a month - though they have all sorts daily 😀

thanks so its not unbiased really, can't explain what i mean, but if you have to sign up for it, its not.like an election, only certain people were asked.

blitheringblackberries · 23/03/2023 09:46

YouGov polls are very accurate, they've been right about most of the recent leadership and election results, Brexit etc

We can't just dump the monarchy, it takes a referendum to do so. I'm pretty confident that Australia will become a republic in the next few years.

Becoming a republic doesn't mean leaving the commonwealth, a country can stay and not have the monarch as head of state.

I understand what you mean - yes people surveyed are self selected people who are interested in being surveyed.

It is an interesting take that the wealth made in the colonies found its way back to Britain is in fact covered by the amount supplied to these nations that were stripped of their resorces in current day aid - in fact Caribbean sugar (using the Carribean as an example) contributed signficantly to British national wealth and power and the amounts that are given to them in aid in no way comes near to the actual amount that the British government would need to give.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/03/2023 10:38

I'm a little unsure about YouGov....

'In July 2022, it was reported that despite being one of the two key founders of YouGov, Nadhim Zahawi was issued no founder shares in the company. Instead, he arranged for the founder shares that would have gone to him to go to a Gibraltar company owned by an offshore trust controlled by his parents.

Why would he do that..?

blitheringblackberries · 23/03/2023 10:43

Which countries have left the Commonwealth? The only one I can think of is Zimbabwe - not exactly a resounding success...

MrsMaxDeWinter · 23/03/2023 11:10

Well given that for centuries Britain ran a slave trade that emptied swathes of Africa, and colonised a good chunk of the brown world for decades, while convicting us that the UK was superior because of race, all while extracting wealth, I would the UK for off pretty damn lightly.

I will thank the UK for aid the day that Charles issues a full and sincere apology for the role that successive members of the Royal Family and UK governments played in my continent's devastation. In any event I would rather change the terms of trade and see equity in multilateral institutions than continued hand outs,

Al that said, I still don't understand why Americans are polled, and not Caribbean nations that are part of the overseas realms.

Why do the views of Americans matter more than the views of the actual subjects of His Majesty?

Why do Caribbean nations matter only as the exotic background to royal tours?

Everyday. Political views from organizations we can name. Political groups should not be allowed to post on Mumsnet in disguise even if they do it politely.
