Minor point on the slavery debate, but I do find it annoying that people say "the British did this" etc, as if farmers, factory workers and the general hoi polloi had any influence and involvement in the slave trade.

The vast majority of Britons of the era were being treated as badly as was legally permitted by the SAME people who were involved in the slave trade!

Very true - the Monarchy though were always on the side of the ruling class and establishment though so no change there. The delicious irony of King Charles having to cancel his first state visit to Republican France and would have had a state banquet in Versailles whilst more than a million French people are on the streets protesting at the retirement age going from 62-64.

It's no stretch to say the monarchy plays a key role in creating British servile pacifity and always has. The working class has had to take what is not given from the ruling classes' cold, greedy, blood-stained hands.

Vive La Republique !

Verse 2 of the French national anthem.

What does this horde of slaves
Of traitors and invented kings want?
For whom have these vile chains
These irons, been long prepared? (repeated)
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
What furious action it must arouse!
It is for us they dare plan
A return to the old slavery!

Great post

Coxspurplepippin · 24/03/2023 18:32

I dunno about great post - sounds more like an incitement to violence.

He's got quite a temper on him hasn't he that Willy he should see somebody for that.

Harry isn’t exactly an advert for therapy and, errrr “alternative” remedies (aka drugs) is he?

everyone has a temper. Harry has a temper, we all know that. That poor polo pony probably bears the scars.

A few posters on mn always glorify riots from safety of wherever

They could burn a city hall if so keen but usually just posts on parenting forum

vera99 · 24/03/2023 18:47

Lest we forget suffragettes put nail bombs in churches - now that is going too far and Poldark fought on the side of French revolutionaries ! (I do know he's fictional btw). Some of the women posters here may have taken their pension at age 60 whilst other women are now looking at 67. The French fight for their rights, literally so, and why not I admire their spirit. I think the BRF have no idea what's coming down the line and starting with a misjudged and hugely expensive Coronation whilst millions struggle to house, heat and feed their families.

If you had been in London for the 2011 riots would you have joined in, looted, lit a match?

How far do you personally go or is it just waxing lyrical for others

I was in London travelling from Streatham to East Dulwich on the bus where I then lived and saw with my own eyes the mayhem. Indeed, getting off the bus in East Dulwich I saw a group of youths attacking the security shutters of Tesco Express being cheered on by a group of folk swigging from cans and smoking spliffs. A couple gave me the evil eye and I rushed home to lock myself in whilst telling a couple in the street to get off the streets.

That was a mindless mob with no political aims nor was it part of a wider political movement and I condemn it without reservation. What is happening in France is part of a wider campaign supported by millions of people who are saying enough is enough - this far and no further. The violence is regrettable but understandable if push people too far then don't be surprised if they push back.

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2023 19:02

Ha I was in East Dulwich Sainsbury’s and had to get out with dc as they closed and boarded it up.

That’s made me laugh, fancy that.

Rioting wrecks communities. I do not condone

So funny there you go 😬

Plitvice · 24/03/2023 19:04

I wasn't aware that things like that happen in East Dulwich.

vera99 · 24/03/2023 19:08

East Dulwich for those that don't know if very yummy mummy but also quite radical in bent and a classic case of gentrification. I would imagine street parties for Royal events wouldn't have automatic buy in from many who would find a reason of why they wouldn't be taking part. We may have passed each other in the street I was there from 1983 to 2017 !

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2023 19:09

It was a moment. Quite surreal. I remember exactly as I went back to the right aisle to get marshmallows post having dc thinking my goodness is this it, me or the marshmallows

I think the Sainsbury’s was ok though. Unfortunately not Clapham or Carpet Right in Croydon? If I remember correctly without googling

It was much worse in Peckham a shop was burnt down and Khan's a big store had the owners out in the streets with baseball bats protecting their premises. I forget what sparked that off it was a madness with mostly teens and some young teens taking part and Boris who was mayor refused to come back from holiday - so the usual from him.

Peckham was bad, I remember. We got off lightly in Muswell Hill (hopefully due to bad transport connections).

Wealthy, pretentious people being awfully radical. It's so chic, isn't it?

A lot of republicans think that those who are OK with the status quo (admittedly, reviewed and tweaked regularly) are 'rabid royalists'. I don't know any rabid royalists - but I know lots of people who would identify as centre-left or centre-right who are old enough and wise enough to know that

a) if it's not broken ( constitutionally, which it does - our speculation about RF personal relationships aren't the point), don't mend it
b) it's naive to imagine that a presidential system would cost less - regular elections etc don't come cheap and on top of parliamentary ones would soon get very boring.
c) a monarch can be a uniting figure - a president is always going to be political, and therefore divide opinion. We might get at Trump rather than an Obama.
d) King Charles loves his privacy and I imagine he's been waiting for the chance to slim down the institution dramatically to be more in line with the bicycling, supermarket-going royals of Scandinavia and The Netherlands. Let him get the coronation over and then (I predict) watch him cut things back a lot.

Let's see how things go. With all the problems in the world at present it's really not a priority to start frothing at the mouth about mild-mannered KCIII, is it?

That is a fair point.

Intersectionality is important and we need to examine the role of class as well as race.

That said:

I come from a country which saw a lot of working class migration from Britain, with many taking over land that belonged to native populations. From the perspective of the people who were invaded, there were no class differences between and among the occupiers: there was only race, and ours was called inferior.
