Sussex's snubbed on both sides of the Atlantic

Harry and Meghan will be invited to the coronation - by necessity - but this toxic pair will be kept at a careful arm's length by all and sundry, excluded from the balcony or carriage procession, and probably positioned somewhere suitably inconspicuous. Most of the family will be wary of them, most will wherever possible avoid them and the crowds will likely boo them. There will be no lucrative photo ops with William or Kate. The Wales children will be in the limelight, but Harry and Meghan's children will be excluded, due to age.

Meanwhile, over in the States, where they no doubt expected to be feted when they planned their dramatic departure from the UK, opinion polls reveal them to be less popular now than even Prince Andrew. South Park mocked them to general acclaim and The Cut published a contemptuous piece about the possible relaunch of the Tig last week.

They've been snubbed and excluded from every big social event, from the Met Gala to Obama's birthday party and Elton John's Oscar's bash. The only parties they have attended have been those hosted by social pariahs like Ellen de Generes.

They are coming across as increasingly desperate and embarrassing. It's hard to to see any possible comeback from here.

You are muddling me up with someone else. Nowhere on MN have I mentioned the NHS.
Why do you say I said stuff I didn't?! Ad infinitum? Nope, not typed the words NHS anywhere.

I am talking about the Coronation when we've just had a State funeral (nothing wrong with that) but also a Jubliee pageant thing.

No you didn't mention the NHS but it's a well worn argument against the Coronation.

Howsimplywonderful · 20/03/2023 13:41

@Roussette

those costs of £100m that you love to quote would include the staffing costs for police and troops at the coronation and other events. What did you think the costs were for ? 🤣🤣🤣 a bit of gold leaf.

Thank you. It wasn't me. And I don't conflate the two.

Show me it will cost less and I'll be interested (you won't be able to). I have actually seen reports saying more but as you will only take note of something that Charles actually says out loud or comes from the .gov site, I won't bother! (p.s. we'll never properly know anyway, there is not transparency about this sort of thing. )

Your post has proved my point exactly.

A massive extravaganza

derxa · 20/03/2023 13:52

A massive extravaganza But people love massive extravaganzas. Next someone will pipe up 'Bread and circuses' or 'Panem et circenses' if they're being particularly annoying.

Howsimplywonderful · 20/03/2023 13:53

The government will have drafted a budget based on staffing requirements for police, troops, ushers etc, putting up barriers, cancelling holidays, overtime etc

i’m sure the police and troops are happy to have the wages in their pockets.

Sorry to burst your illusions that someone is making millions from the day.

God alive. What is it with posters this afternoon? Making up absolute bullshit !!!

Please point out where I have said or even hinted at this scenario "Sorry to burst your illusions that someone is making millions from the day."

I'll wait.

That is not my point at all as can be seen from my posts.

Are you intimating she was drunk? And no she didn't snarl.

milti · 20/03/2023 14:05

How would I know why she was staggering about ? And yes she did !

Interestingly debates over Coronation budgets have been going on for centuries!
^^
The coronation of George IV in 1821 was an expensive and lavish affair with a vast amount of money being spent on it.[20]
^^
George's brother and successor William IV had to be persuaded to be crowned at all; his coronation at a time of economic depression in 1831 cost only one sixth of that spent on the previous event.

Traditionalists threatened to boycott what they called a "Half Crown-nation".[21] The king merely wore his robes over his uniform as Admiral of the Fleet.[22]

For this coronation, a number of economising measures were made which would set a precedent followed by future monarchs.

The assembly of peers and ceremonial at Westminster Hall involving the presentation of the regalia to the monarch was eliminated.

The procession from Westminster Hall to the Abbey on foot was likewise eliminated and in its place, a state procession by coach from St James's Palace to the abbey was instituted, and this pageantry is an important feature of the modern event.[21] The coronation banquet after the service proper was also terminated.[23]

You think what you want. I'll just think that is an unpleasant and not true thing to post.

There you go. End of.

milti · 20/03/2023 14:07

I will

Howsimplywonderful · 20/03/2023 14:08

The police security costs of the queen’s funeral were 7.5m alone so his gives a good
idea of the costs of an event.

michaelmacrae · 20/03/2023 14:17

There was no snarl.

Finestripes202 · 20/03/2023 14:25

Roussette · 20/03/2023 13:12

It was deffo going to be low key. Then suddenly it all changed. 3 days, yet another concert, and all the razzamatazz.

And it was put to us as something we want? Well.... not everybody does! The publicity and endless news on it is going to increase all the time. News on what children do what. What will be worn. Who will sit where. Who will walk where. Who will wear what crown. Which tiara. So superficial. Blah blah...

I do applaud the Big Help Out app... anything to encourage volunteering is good in my book. If Charles had concentrated on that alongside a short ceremony, I would've been impressed.

But I am happy to link it endlessly... I've been a volunteer for yonks. Here it is...

I totally agree with you Roussette!

It’s interesting how the tone changed isn’t it? Knowing what we know now about the BBC and its Chairman and how the government has too much power over what should be an independent institution, perhaps they gave the Palace a nudge? We’ll probably never find out though.

Derxa
Let's get rid of all big national events in the UK. The Olympics, the Commonwealth Games the FA cups in England and Scotland in fact all football matches, Eurovision Song Contest. Trooping of the Colour, jubilees everything.
They all cost money to organise. We could give it all to the NHS. Then we could make Gary Lineker prime minister since he would be out of a job as a pundit.

I think the point is that, aside from the funeral service of Diana, we have just had probably one of the most memorable public events that’s ever taken place in modern times in the late Queen’s funeral, and it’s not necessary to have another of the same magnitude quite so soon, it really isn’t. Modern European monarchies manage perfectly well with a straightforward pared down ceremony. One that would demonstrate that the Monarchy is in tune with its people, rather than spending all that money when there’s a cost of living crisis.

If the financial institutions can’t shore up the downward spiral caused by the imminent collapse of Credit Suisse - something they have been attempting during emergency meetings over the past two weekends - then the decision to have an extravagant ceremony, with public services on strike and the NHS on its knees, might prove to be very damaging indeed.

Where is the money going from the tv licences though? In to the coffers of the BBC, or back to the RF, or what?

They haven’t t really been given a choice as to whether they should love it or not have they?

wordler · 20/03/2023 14:31

The TV money isn’t a lot compared to the security costs - it generated about 200,000 pounds for the weddings which they released figures for.

If I got to vote I’d have the BBC keep it but dedicate it to keeping the local BBC radio services going which are facing huge cut backs and do actually provide a decent local community service especially now that local newspapers have all been decimated.

Gosh I am surprised the total of income generated from licence fees is so small given that it is broadcast around the world?

I would put the money towards re-employing the BBC chorus who have all, very sadly, just been “let go”.

I think that’s the profit after operational costs are taken out - it’s very very very expensive to stage that kind of live broadcast operation - both equipment and staffing costs.

Interesting facts about previous Coronations wordler. Thank you!

Novella4 · 20/03/2023 14:44

The coronation is a massive waste of money . If you know what it actually represents and look beyond the gilt , it's embarrassing in 2023 .

  • It is completely unnecessary. He was 'king' when Elizabeth breathed her last . The coronation is a PR event for Windsor inc .
  • how many people are active members of the C of E ? I believe the UK is no longer a majority Christian country . I suppose it's therefore no wonder the COE top brass can swallow their disquiet as they anoint the two who made a mockery of Charles' first marriage .
Charles can quack on about multi faith all he likes - the coronation ensconces the state religion . A minority religion at that .

Pre Cromwell kings got away with saying it was god's will that they be 'king' and to defy the king was to defy God. The coronation in the UK skates as close as they can to this idea - borrowing all the trappings of religion and calling on the holy spirit, placing Charles as head of their church .
Laughable .

I guarantee if asked most people won't know the difference between a coronation and an inauguration. And yes it does matter . And there is reason that other European monarchies have long abandoned them - they wouldn't dare .

I believe the Winsdors are badly out of touch .
Who these days is impressed by gilt and feathers ?
The same types who hanker for their long lost empire I suppose

They are admitting to £100 000 000 in costs for the magic hat day . So in truth it will be more

And they didn’t have Mumsnet to moan about it all either!

Boring old days when you just had to see people in person down the pub instead of telling strangers on the internet how wrong they are! 😂
