Lillibet's christening

Lillibet was christened in California last Friday by the Archbishop. Meghan's mother was there. Charles, Camilla, William and Kate were invited, but neither Harry's father or brother attended.

They're still not great anything.

They're Charles that is the Kings, niece and nephew.

People don't understand family history

Maireas · 10/03/2023 12:51

To answer pp's question, I think Lilibet is older than usual for a C of E baptism. I realise now people will come on with examples of older baptisms, but the usual practice is young babies. I think Archie was a few months old.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 10/03/2023 12:52

Your brothers children are your niece and nephew!!!

Archbishop is just a Bishop of a Metropolitan area. Los Angeles is a Metropolitan area so the official would normally be known as an Archbishop.

William said Charles has little to do with his children, so not surprising he would not fly to Los Angeles for a grandchild's christening.

And @Housewife2010 Ah, I see. That makes perfect sense now that you've pointed it out to me!

I think the King referred to here is George VI. They are his great-grandchildren.

OutOfChocolate · 10/03/2023 13:14

@jeffgoldblum Why the question marks? It is true.

Jose' Gomez is the archbishop of L.A

And, as women, B&E can't pass on any titles.

E.g. Edward's children - grandchildren of a monarch through the male line, so could style themselves HRH Prince/ss James/Louise of Wessex.

James would eventually become HRH the Earl of Wessex after his father, his children won't be HRH Prince/ss, but would be Lord/Lady Name Mountbatten-Windsor.

Louise's children wouldn't have titles (unless their father has a title that gets passed on).

James is already the Earl of Wessex

www.royal.uk/succession

The eldest son of a duke uses the next most senior title of his father. So when Edward was an earl, his son James used his next-most-senior title of viscount. Now Edward's moved up to the dukedom, James has also moved up to the new next-most-senior.

jeffgoldblum · 10/03/2023 13:28

John h Taylor is the bishop who did the christening, the church calls him a bishop , his own twitter calls him a bishop .
He is not an archbishop.
It doesn't matter in the scheme of things but it is important to get people's titles correct !

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/03/2023 13:55

There are no archbishops in the US Episcopal Church. Even the primate is not an archbishop. He or she is the Presiding Bishop. It was an error on the part of someone that the announcement referred to the "Archbishop of Los Angeles."

There is an actual Archbishop of Los Angeles (Jose Gomez). He is Roman Catholic.

OutOfChocolate · 10/03/2023 14:11

It was an error on the part of someone who does not understand the difference between the US and the UK. In the UK he would be an Archbishop.

My post was before the announcement that Edward is now DofE - so at that point James was not the Earl of Wessex.

jeffgoldblum · 10/03/2023 14:24

How?

jeffgoldblum · 10/03/2023 14:28

It was a mistake full stop!
Probably unintentional, however a mistake, I don't know why your saying these things to defend a unimportant mistake.
He is a bishop in the US and would remain a bishop in the U.K. .

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 14:35

It is nothing to do with being a 'metropolitan area'. London has two bishops, Leeds has one, Newcastle has one etc etc In the CofE there are two Provinces, each of which is headed by an Archbishop.

The Episcopal Church in the US, which is part of the Anglican Communion, doesn't seem to be structured in that way, there are only bishops.

sydneysunset · 10/03/2023 14:49

When it comes to H&M and those around them, the ignorance really has no bounds.

If I’d gone to the trouble of inviting a Bishop to perform a private christening for me, damn straight I’d make sure I knew his proper title when telling he world about it. It’s not like they have the excuse of never having met people of different ranks before, whether in the clergy or otherwise, and not knowing that titles matter, after all…..

OutOfChocolate · 10/03/2023 14:56

Except Harry and Meghan did not write the article. A reporter will have made a misatke.

OP posts:
sydneysunset · 10/03/2023 15:02

The announcement came from them - perhaps in calligraphic script on paper with an heraldic letterhead? Didn’t they dispense with their staff & declare that they would be writing all their own press releases henceforth?

The statement certainly showcases Meghan’s distinctive flair for pomposity and ignorance, so my money’s on her.

Serenster · 10/03/2023 15:04

People magazine publish celebrity press releases though. They don’t have journalists in the way you suggest. Or do you imagine they have a religious correspondent?

Howsimplywonderful · 10/03/2023 15:05

@OutOfChocolate

It says a spokesman and provided a direct quote from said spokesman using the title Archbishop
. It it’s not people’s fault, it’s Harry and Meghan’s spokesman’s fault

I hope they weren’t calling him Archbishop all day 🤣

mixedrecycling · 10/03/2023 15:07

Maybe H has never attended a family ceremony where someone lower than an archbishop officiated - so he didn't realise that it was possible to have a mere bishop!

Howsimplywonderful · 10/03/2023 15:07

@OutOfChocolate

Here is the link, it is quite clear that the spokesperson was at fault
