Camilla's grandchildren to take star role in the coronation

The DM is reporting this (who else). Apprently Camilla's grandchildren are to play a prominent role in the coronation alongside the other heirs. Not sure I agree with this. Although I quite like Camila now although I didn't used to.

Now I can't wait to read the royalists on here tie themselves in knots praising the 'protocol' when Charles's step grandchildren are involved and his other grandchildren aren't

I think this is more likely a matter of practicalities than protocol. Charles’ grandchildren range in ages from 9-1. There’s very little in the way of roles they could all be given other than being part of a procession, I imagine? It’s likely they will all be invited, though likely the youngest won’t attend, again for practical reasons (as was the case for many of the Queen’s great grandchildren at her funeral).

Camilla’s grandchildren on the other hand are all older teenagers, and so capable of taking on an actual responsibility like holding her canopy.

As for other Queen consorts with children, there’s been a couple of near-misses. Queen Victoria’s mother had a daughter from her first marriage before she married Victoria’s father the Duke of Kent. He would have been King had he not died shortly after his daughter was born, meaning Victoria became the heir.

I don’t it’s that close to the tube station.

More of a gentle background rumble.

@serenster

Really ?

'Practicality' you say ...How strange .

Why involve the Parker Bowles step grandchildren at all when your beloved (nonsense ) protocol states it should be duchesses holding the canopy??

I really really hope it's true . The 'royals ' really are that stupid so it
could be

It will speed the end of the monarchy

It will speed the end of the monarchy

Genuinely laughing at the idea that Joe and Jane public will choke on their lunch when they discover that several Duchesses of the UK whom they couldn’t remotely pick out of a lineup have been replaced by the grandchildren of the woman who’s the centre of that part of the ceremony. I rather think the majority of viewers will think it is a lovely and personal touch.

Royal ceremony evolves all the time. Did you know that QEII’s coffin was drawn by sailors from the Royal Navy only because at Victoria’s funeral the horses that were supposed to be doing it got spooked and wouldn’t be harnesses, and there just happened to be a group of sailors there who were hastily substituted? They’ve done that ever since. They used to have a huge banquet in Westminster Hall after the coronation too, but that got ditched. Queen Victoria thought hers had finished and left Westminster Abbey only to have to be called back…

If you want to see Charles as an iconoclast, I would have thought the fact he’s going to invite other monarchs to his coronation is a far bigger breach of past protocol. Again, I can’t see the public being overly bothered.

Binfluencer · 26/02/2023 12:10

We shouldn't even be having a Coronation when nurses are resorting to food backs. Completely tone deaf, hateful, evil thing to do.

Who cares which spoilt rich ppl attend?

This

Novella4 · 26/02/2023 19:34

Yes

Novella4 · 26/02/2023 19:36

@Serenster

Oh we all know the 'protocol' evolves.
Evolves to suit whatever the Windsors want .

You are wrong if you think even royalists are fine with this .
I mean the daily Mail is royalist central isn't it ?

I'd def like to see the King's Champion ride into the banquet and challenge anyone who doubted the king's title.

I'm surprised at you, reading the Mail. Let alone the comments. I thought reading that paper - let alone admitting to it - was absolutely taboo on here.

Well, who the else should it suit?, after all? Every CEO I’ve ever worked with has changed things to suit themselves.

bobbytorq · 26/02/2023 20:09

MrsFinkelstein · 26/02/2023 12:18

Nurse here. I'm looking forward to the Coronation, we could do with some pomp and bling to sparkle things up a bit.

If you want to complain about foodbanks then aim your ire at the Tories who have been in Government for a decade now.

Who do you think supports the pomp and bling? And it is totally offensive to have such a display of wealth.

Novella4 · 26/02/2023 20:13

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain

You are right . But I took a bullet for the team .
You are welcome .

Novella4 · 26/02/2023 20:16

@Serenster
Who should it suit ???
Isn't the whole point of your ( nonsense) protocol that is all about the unchanging rite and ritual ?

They actually try to convince people that the con- a-nation is a 1000 year told unchanging rite and royalists are now saying 'Meh' Camilla - sorry ! - Charles can do what he wants !
Keep your story straight

Dzogchen · 26/02/2023 20:16

MrsFinkelstein · 26/02/2023 12:24

I'm not a peasant, I'm a highly educated Professional.

I'm sorry if you feel the need to denigrate other people who hold different views to you.

It's actually comments like that that make me more stubborn to the thought of Republicanism.

With respect, forelock-tugging bread and circuses are hardly the hallmark of a ‘highly-educated’ mind.

Novella4 · 26/02/2023 20:18

My sources at the palace are now saying it has not been confirmed that the Parker Bowles will be taking part .
So
Either William is twirling incandescent with rage at the prospect of protocol being ignored
OR
They've also read the comments in the daily fail

Serenster · 26/02/2023 20:20

Or it was all rubbish to start with. Remember when the Mail assured us that the Queen’s grandchildren would all take place in a carriage ride at the Windsor Horse show? That never happened either.

(And I don’t know what you’d imagine that there’s a hive mind among the many many people who aren’t up in arms about the prospect of the coronation. What a ludicrous idea!)

derxa · 26/02/2023 20:23

Dzogchen · 26/02/2023 20:16

Nor the use of clicheed phrases.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 26/02/2023 20:28

They can’t have Duchesses holding the canopy and then cut the Dukes out of the other bits.

So a way of changing the canopy ceremony bit was needed and the grandkids are the obvious ones

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/02/2023 20:29

Isn't the whole point of your ( nonsense) protocol that is all about the unchanging rite and ritual ?

It isn't unchanging and that's the point. The last coronation was televised, whihc was a huge change. This coronation is being devised to take account of the changed society in which it takes place. That's the whole point of protocol. It changes and adapts.

the con- a-nation

You're pathetic. You used actually to make some grown up points, what happened?

StClare101 · 26/02/2023 20:30

Caviarandgelatine · 26/02/2023 12:29

I didn't say you were a peasant. If you're a highly educated professional then you're probably not waiting in line for the food bank, are you?

You said nurses need food banks. Do you not see nurses as highly educated?

Livelovebehappy · 26/02/2023 20:50

I’m totally over the Camilla thing tbh. I really didn’t want her by the side of Charles once upon a time, but when I read the ongoing shit show starring Harry and Meghan, Charles and Camilla’s past misdemeanours pale into insignificance. Let them have their pomp and ceremony.

Tezza1 · 26/02/2023 21:24

Viviennemary · 26/02/2023 15:12

I think Camilla might be the first Queen to be crowned who already had children by a previous marriage. There is Elinor of Aquitaine but her first marriage was annulled. Can't think of anybody else.

Elizabeth Woodville was a widow with two sons when she married Edward IV, and was crowned Queen. Reference: the ever reliable Jean Plaidy's "The Old Grey Mare" (I think, but it's decades since I read it).

SpringIntoChaos · 26/02/2023 22:20

Would you want your own grandchildren to play a role at an important life event of yours OP? I know I would!

Tezza1 · 26/02/2023 23:31

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/02/2023 15:19

And Eleanor was reputed to have been the mistress of Henry II's father, although that was probably the standard misogyny directed at any woman near the seat of male power.

I love the scene in 'The Lion in Winter' when Eleanor taunts Henry with the affair with his father. And yes I know most of the play is fictitious, but it was astonishingly good drama.
