Protests greeted Charles latest visit to a foodbank at Milton Keynes. At least he wasn't egged this time.

What are you going on about. Dumfries House's main focus is not dying arts. It's farming, horticulture, rural life and catering.

Derxa I am responding directly to a post defending Dumfries House saying it teaches old crafts. If it teaches catering and agriculture, then it is just like any other agricultural and catering college that are provided at a fraction of the cost of Dumfries House.

Everything is integrated on a beautiful site. It doesn't cost you a penny. It's providing employment for many people in a socially deprived area. You would take that away would you?

If that was a response to my post I didn't say anything about 'old crafts' being taught at Dunfermline House. My post was in response to a previous post suggesting there is no worth in 'old crafts' and the teaching thereof.

Learning these skills can provide a good career. The specific example of french polishing being a dying skill and people's tastes changing - undoubtedly. IKEA furniture doesn't need french polishing. But there is plenty of furniture around which does, and anyone with the skill is going to be in demand.

When I left school, the careers service offered office roles, teaching, nursing. If I'd been aware that there were jobs such as stained glass artist or repairing antique tapestries I'd have been in there. But no-one thought to tell a young, working class woman that these kinds of careers existed. Anything/anyone that signposts young people towards such careers is, imo, a very good thing.

I think some on this thread would, purely because of Charles's involvement.

I'd be entirely happy to see such an initiative succeed on its own charitable merits but I don't think I'm wrong to suspect the involvement of bulging plastic carrier bags of cold hard cash, £100k sleepovers and suggestions of the awarding of plastic gongs might preclude that.

A quick google of Dumfries House shows it has a Traditional Skills Centre which teaches Stone Masonry, Dry Stone Walling and Rural Woodcraft, as well as Plastering, Plumbing, Painting, Electrical and Brickwork.

This is a really good post OP that I agree 100%

I guess so but I just read that his legal fight against the Home Office is costing us the tax payer £300000 so far but hey ho why not, his life is so hard life…

Roussette · 20/02/2023 07:21

No, I didn't. You put words into my mouth and I couldn't be arsed to respond until now.
I asked if it was viable. I did not question old crafts, I live in the middle of nowhere and know how important they are. I know dry stone wallers, and woodworkers.... they learnt their craft at a particular college I won't name for privacy reasons. Dumfries House is lovely for the few hundred that manage to pass through their doors, but the rest of the population have to access this sort of learning elsewhere.

PatientZorro · 20/02/2023 09:31

Well done those protestors.

Why do people assume "we" (presumably tax-payers) pay for absolutely everything a royal spends?
They are multi-millionaires you know

I guess the £300,000 is what the home office has paid in legal fees to defend the action. Not what Harry's fees are.

Yes, you're right. And presumably if he loses (and it's likely he will lose) he will have to pay it back.
