Protests greeted Charles latest visit to a foodbank at Milton Keynes. At least he wasn't egged this time.

myrtleWilson, an urban myth in the making, right before our eyes. Repeat often enough and it becomes true....

Serenster · 17/02/2023 20:17

The Duchess of Sussex did once make a public statement that she sponsored a kennel at the Mayhew dog shelter in Archie’s name, in the amount of £10 a month, if you want an example of royal transparency here. Mayhew was listed on the recent Archewell Impact Report, so she’s presumably still paying it.

Gingerkittykat · 17/02/2023 20:20

Charles, William and Kate visiting foodbanks seems really crass. They are the ultimate symbols of wealth and status and how unequal this country is and them turning up and chucking a few quid in the coffers is insulting to the clients of a foodbank who have absolutely nothing.

Good for her. It's a good advertisement fir the kennel.
But wait a minute, is she paying it? Or the charity?

How is donating £1,000,000 crazy and insulting? It's hardly a few quid!! It enables food to be kept longer and so more peoole can receive aid. Charles wouldn't have known they needed fridges and freezers so desperately if he hadn't visited. Plus, the volunteers were really excited and happy to meet the RF. Why can't they have a little joy in their day too?

LlynTegid · 17/02/2023 20:29

People are entitled to protest, peaceful and it seems in a dignified manner. Not disrupting others going about their day.

As I am able to disagree with them.

OutofEverything · 17/02/2023 16:18

@MarshaMelrose You do not know that. You are making assumptions.
I am assuming if it was large, the amount would have been disclosed.

Oh the irony…..criticising someone for “making assumptions” and the next breath “making assumptions” themselves.

pilates · 17/02/2023 20:34

£10 a month - that’s a bit embarrassing. Doesn’t even cover food for a dog for a month.

I’d have loved to see them at a local food bank. Think it’s great that they care and have either donated or fundraised £1m to help out. What’s Sunak done when he’s 100x richer than they are? Complain about the utility bill for his indoor heated Olympic sized swimming pool and tried to get us to pay for it as an MP “expense”.

Groups of protesters will be a frequent sight from now on

It doesn't matter how large the group is - just as 'crowds' for royal visits are much much thinner than in the past- it keeps the issue live.

And it is a real issue . And it will have to be addressed .

Novella4 · 17/02/2023 20:45

Oh and the group told the police well in advance so Charles would have been prepared - it was no shock .

Off topic but what the hell is going on with Charles's decorum ? He is walking about with his mouth open and his tongue hanging out ! It's bizzare and extremely off putting .
Is this part of the open mouth 'I'm laughing my head off' ( false grin) approach all the Windsors are doing .
It looks insane

I guess the people who need food from foodbanks will be very grateful to the Sheikh, then.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 17/02/2023 20:49

A peaceful protest making a valid point.

Novella4 · 17/02/2023 20:56

You wouldn't want to be around when Charles got back though !

Can you imagine the tantrum ?

You do realise they're not actually using them? They have harrods hampers supplied daily. They are just there to support the people working there and raise awareness that in such a rich country, we shouldn't need food banks. Quiet dig at the government as they are not allowed to actually speak out.

Bit unfortunate to bring utility bills into it perhaps - after all it was the late Queen who tried to dip into a fund for the disadvantaged to pay those of the palace

MargaritaRita · 17/02/2023 21:21

Sunak and the likes will not be PM forever, neither will their PM status pass automatically to their children or children's children. But the RF will and we have zero say in the matter either. That's a bit of a problem for a democracy IMV.

Well said

KnittedCardi · 17/02/2023 21:43

It's the usual damned if you damned if you don't. The world is unequal, every wealthy country has food banks, every third world country has starvation, death and disease. The Bill Gates interview was interesting. He has been accused of being a white saviour in Africa for spending millions on health and agriculture. Should he not bother either?

It’s not his first Rodeo, he’s had far worse than a few placards, he certainly won’t have broken into a sweat over events today.

pilates · 17/02/2023 22:06

A tantrum over a handful of protesters I doubt it

I assuming @Serenster is trying to ridicule MM but my take on this is that iit is a symbolic gesture in Archie's name - he is just a toddler fgs. This was to raise awareness for the kennel and encourage others to do the same a regular but affordable amount. So for her to donate a huge amount for this publicity shot would not have got others to do donate.

From the DF ...
The Duchess of Sussexex^ has revealed she has sponsored a dog's kennel at a rescue centre in her son Archie's name.
The Mayhew shelter in north Londonon^ asks members of the public to pay £10-a-month to sponsor a 'deluxe dog room'.

I said that in two sentences. But I'd like to think she's using her own money for the £10 donation and not Archewell funds.

There are lots of different sponsorships people can do. It doesn't seem too much when it's taken out monthly. I do my local RSPCA, Brookes, the donkey sanctuary, and a local hamster rescue. I really wish she had been able to advertise it more because it's a great cause. But good for her for getting involved and not stopping the payment when she moved abroad.

Comedycook · 18/02/2023 10:22

Why do we act surprised or grateful that they do charity work? They don't have a choice really. How else would they justify their existence? Apart from the odd ceremonial thing like the opening of parliament or hosting receptions for visiting heads of states, they would have nothing much to do. Of course they have to do charity work...it's literally their job.
