William being rude during public visit

William visited an Ipswich hospital. A staff member had made cakes for his visit and decorated them with union jacks.
William then took part in a video call with some children, including the sin if the woman who made the cakes, William said to the young boy: ‘Your mother’s feeding me her cakes.’ He then held up a cupcake to the camera, and said: ‘They’re not very good!’ The children then burst into laughter as the prince adds: ‘I’ve told her she wouldn’t win Bake Off.’

I can understand the children laughing, but this is just so rude. The NHS staff member made cakes with her own money for his visit and all he can do is insult them.

It’s not rude. It’s a joke.

QueenOfHiraeth · 15/02/2023 22:51

I imagine it was that thing called humour Hmm

GyozaGuiting · 15/02/2023 22:52

Jesus Christ, it’s a joke.

Btjdkfnn · 15/02/2023 22:53

It was a joke. He was clearly not being mean. I expect he had a laugh with the baker.

Justcallmebebes · 15/02/2023 22:54

Sense of humour bypass OP?

OutofEverything · 15/02/2023 22:54

I wonder if the woman thought it was a joke to have someone visiting saying her home baked cakes tasted awful. Jokes are supposed to be funny.

Good grief.

OutofEverything · 15/02/2023 22:55

So if you go and visit someone and they give you home made cake, do you joke it tastes terrible?

OP posts:
Figgygal · 15/02/2023 22:56

Did you bake the cakes op?

I agree I wouldn’t find that funny unless maybe it was a sibling ie. Someone super close to me who cracked that “joke”.

There’s usually a grain of truth in jokes so it does sound like deep down he wasn’t keen on them which is fine but you shouldn’t really voice that through a joke but who knows, maybe the woman found it funny.

Redglitter · 15/02/2023 22:57

Oh ffs he was clearly joking with her son & his friends. It's not like he took a bite spat it out & said jeez these are awful

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/02/2023 22:58

Were you there OP? Because I got the impression from what I read that this was a joke the baker was fully in on. Perhaps she'd just shared that her children don't like her cakes, or perhaps she does have a lighthearted family reputation for being a bad baker.

Without full context we'll never know, so there's zero point in speculating.

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/02/2023 22:58

It’s a joke. My guess is he’d already had a chat with the woman and said oh they are lovely cakes!’ and she said something like ‘they won’t be, I’m shit at baking’, so he’s continuing the banter.

Do you really think it likely OP he would be being rude about someone’s baking? If you do I think an early night is called for.

YouAndMeVsTheWorld · 15/02/2023 22:59

Jokes made at other people’s expense aren’t funny, especially when they punch down

OutofEverything · 15/02/2023 23:00

You prefer to make up things the woman said to justify his rudeness rather than accept he was rude?

OP posts:
lollipoprainbow · 15/02/2023 23:01

It was a cringeworthy attempt at him trying to show his humorous side and failing badly.

LadyWithLapdog · 15/02/2023 23:04

I think it’s funny.

VirtualRealitee · 15/02/2023 23:04

Oh for goodness sake, I expect she had to sweep the crumbs up off the counter afterwards so that her family might eat again the next day 🙄

He clearly felt comfortable enough to joke about it because you know...he probably knows the woman has a sense of humour.

If he'd visited your home, there's no way on God's green earth he'd attempt so much as a smile, clearly.

Coxspurplepippin · 15/02/2023 23:05

It was a bit of light hearted banter. The lady who baked the cakes thought it was funny, the kids thought it was funny. But, heyho, it was Prince William so it was insulting, bad, rude etc etc etc.

They'd obviously had some sort of giggle about the cakes, that much is obvious.

OutofEverything · 15/02/2023 23:07

How do you know what the woman who baked the cakes thought? She can hardly complain and chuck him out. She has no choice but to smile at work and say nothing.

I don’t know why but I always thought the royal family members wouldn’t eat anything that hadn’t been okayed by ‘their people’ incase of poisoning.

Surely you can't be for real?

Pegsmum · 15/02/2023 23:10

It was a joke. The lady who baked the cakes was on the news earlier and she said William had told her that her cakes were lovely.
