William being rude during public visit

William visited an Ipswich hospital. A staff member had made cakes for his visit and decorated them with union jacks.
William then took part in a video call with some children, including the sin if the woman who made the cakes, William said to the young boy: ‘Your mother’s feeding me her cakes.’ He then held up a cupcake to the camera, and said: ‘They’re not very good!’ The children then burst into laughter as the prince adds: ‘I’ve told her she wouldn’t win Bake Off.’

I can understand the children laughing, but this is just so rude. The NHS staff member made cakes with her own money for his visit and all he can do is insult them.

Did he say it seriously? Or in a jokey voice meaning that really he thought they were delicious?

Grimchmas · 15/02/2023 23:34

Jokes made at other people’s expense aren’t funny, especially when they punch down

This. I get that it was an attempt at humour, I just don't think it's funny. I think it's a twatty thing to say, and that he should know better.

VirtualRealitee · 15/02/2023 23:35

Christ the misery. How do you get through a normal day OP?

Haffiana · 15/02/2023 23:37

Ooh, I agree, how very awful & dreadful.

I never pass up an opportunity to be offended on behalf of people who don't need or want me to be offended for them. I LOVE being offended and thinking the worst, and I make up or misunderstand whole situations to do it about!!

I imagine it was that thing called humour Hmm

Not allowed anymore

punch down🙄

God, this over-used term.

Maybe if, I dunno, Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver made fun of the cakes and was nasty about it, you could call it punching down.

Prince William isn't exactly known for his cooking skills and it was just light-hearted banter.

So you don’t think the future king is perceived as more powerful or more privileged than an NHS worker.

I want to live in a world where that is true, and until that time I will keep pointing out when people punch down.

impossible · 15/02/2023 23:42

It was a joke between him and the nurse, who asked William to facetime the boy, which he did, repeating the joke.

I'm not a royalist but I think it's a stretch to be offended by this.

Octopusmittens · 15/02/2023 23:43

ODFOD

Thedogscollar · 15/02/2023 23:46

The world's gone mad. Seriously, this has upset you. Open your eyes OP there are so many worthier things to be upset about.

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/02/2023 23:48

OldTinHat · 15/02/2023 23:30

It was apparently a joke and the woman asked William if he'd talk to her son on Facetime. He did, hence the laughter because her son was with his friends.

Having watched it again, the immediate burst of laughter from all the kids when he's says he's eating Mum's cakes speaks of a well-known back story or in-joke he's been let it on.

She makes awful cakes, or especially good ones, or she always applies for Bake Off, or she's been on Bake Off. Something the kids would know about and immediately get the joke.

Pinky1011 · 15/02/2023 23:48

I agree it is probably just a joke. But if Meghan or Harry said the same thing would everyone be so quick to defend?🤔

Coxspurplepippin · 15/02/2023 23:48

YouAndMeVsTheWorld, have you watched the video? It's so obviously a nice moment between Kerry, her son and William. There is nothing to be offended by. Unless of course you're out to find fault with anything a member of the RF does. People used to comment that the Queen's 'have you come far' was boring, but tbh, seeing the way any attempt at chat is pounced on, I'm not surprised it's the chat the Queen used.

BillLius · 15/02/2023 23:48

Hi Harry 👋

I believe he thinks he was being funny. Like men who jokingly criticise their wives cooking at a family gathering. But they are just twats.

Whatever you're doing I am right behind you DOWN WITH THE MONARCHY

semideponent · 15/02/2023 23:57

A joke that was flat and not very funny from the beginning. I find cake culture annoying, frustrating and difficult to navigate. I haven't followed this story though.

It’s the term ‘punch down’. When you use it most people switch off as it’s mostly used online by totally insufferable people. Just FYI. Obliterates your point even if it is reasonable

’Cake culture’ 🤯 do you mean home baking? Flip me.

No it is the kind of thing kids would find hilarious - a Prince saying what they know should not be said.

You like laughing at people and putting them down. That’s your choice.

I think it rude, I think it can be hurtful, I don’t want a society where the rich and powerful abuse others.

when you joke at others peoples expense you are not “funny” and those laughing just feel awkward around you

Daffodilsandtuplips · 16/02/2023 00:03

Are you Meghan?

The kids all laughed. They thought it was funny. Jeez he was trying to(and did) make kids laugh, it was hardly a high brow audience.

DorritLittle · 16/02/2023 00:08

Good grief.

What term do you want to use if such a term will stop you reading or “turn you off”

I am very very turned off by ghastly men abusing their power and privilege, and watching a bunch of sycophants thinking that this waste of money is so hilarious.

what eloquent turn of phrase would you have me use to titillate you?

QueSyrahSyrah · 16/02/2023 00:10

But they unanimously laughed before he said they weren't good, and the sentence 'Your Mum is feeding me cakes' isn't funny on it's own, unless there's some background reason that it's funny, that everyone is already in on, and can anticipate the punchline.

Tbh all your posts on this thread are riven with hysterical language. I’m just pointing out to you that most people in real life cringe at the term ‘punch down’. You can take that knowledge or continue to have people disregard what you say. I’m anti monarchy btw. I also have a sense of humour. Maybe you could try developing one and save your ire for actual displays of inequality.
