If King Charles asked people not to boo the couple and did a deal with newspapers and TV to not print pictures of them or comment on their appearance, do you think they would come.

If there was a total news blackout where they were concerned (which I would just love!) so we didn't have to even see them, (apart from a passing glimpse), i think I could bear them coming. Daddy clearly want them there. Fatted calf and all that.

Would this get around the problem of them taking the spotlight away from the actual ceremony?

The BBC text snippet suggests to me that BP has sent out e-mails to several people, forewarning that a formal invitation will follow.
If H and M do come I don't see how they would steal any show. For the papers and the TV there will be a lot more than them to look at and comment on.

This is my understanding. They want to get a sense of who will be accepting before the formal invitations go out. There is a poster in Style and Beauty who has received an email "pre-invitation" and wants advice on what to wear.

SirChenjins · 06/03/2023 13:49

I imagine H&M expected to be treated differently from a MNetter though.

@IcedPurple

Nice try at deflection . I listed the other countries with coronations as I expected that would be the first deflection attempt .
I'll leave it to people to draw their own conclusions

People can also ask themselves why the UK is the only country in Europe to continue with the coronation nonsense . All the other 'constitutional monarchies ' have long abandoned them .
Why would that be ?

How about you address the issues I raise about here in the uk and the fact that we are forking out for this religious / PR magic hat nonsense ?

jeffgoldblum · 06/03/2023 14:02

A crown is not a magic hat! , this is not Harry Potter.

Deflection? What am I meant to be 'deflecting' from?

"UK Tonga and Thailand Japan have coronations . And yes people do laugh at them ."

Recognise those words? You should, as it's a quote from you. Just a few posts up thread.

You specifically said that people laugh at other nations' coronations. A few of us are curious as to who these people are who find Thailand's or Japan's traditions so hilarious. Since you made the claim, you can surely back it up, given how much more intelligent you are than the easily conned masses. Or do you prefer to deflect?

MrSheepy · 06/03/2023 14:19

Does the crown talk to the monarch when it’s popped in their head? Is that how they decide which of their titles is going to be their new surname? Or which palace they are going to move into?

DaphneduM · 06/03/2023 14:20

The Coronation is turning into a bit of a fiasco really. In my opinion it is so inappropriate to have an expensive Coronation at this time. I actually used to like Charles, but now find him petty and cold. His strategic thinking seems all over the place too - one minute evicting Harry and Meghan, then saying they can stay at Frogmore Cottage if they do agree to come to the Coronation.

William had better watch his back too, with Camilla on manoevres for the trappings to be given to her family.

Regarding the excuse that it's a bad look to have Frogmore Cottage empty, at least Meghan and Harry paid for their own renovations, unlike the taxpayer funded Apartment 1a for William and Kate, which is now empty. If they do take over Royal Lodge I hope us as taxpayers will baulk at that being renovated by our funds. There's got to be a limit, surely?

I used to be in favour of the Monarchy, but it's not looking good since Charles took over - and that's before you think of the amount of inheritance tax he has been able to be exempted from. One rule for them, etc..........................

AliceOlive · 06/03/2023 14:26

Money, when spent does not disappear into the ether. It does into the economy.

Charles seems more human to me now, thanks to Harry. I suspect many with problems in their own families will feel that way. Particularly for those of us with family members who attempt to normalize and glorify drug use. And also for anyone with entitled family members.

sydneysunset · 06/03/2023 14:37

@AliceOlive

Totally agree, H&M have unwittingly rehabilitated the images of several royals - especially King Charles, Camilla, Kate and William.

Talk about own goals!

entirelyesspresso · 06/03/2023 14:40

They were asked to vacate after the coronation all along. It was a given that they would stay there during the coronation and then pack up their personal belongings.

There are dozens of royal residences they can use when visiting the UK, it is very wasteful to have a newly refurbished and modernised property, with staff on standby standing empty while they have a permanent residence in another country (as it has been for 3 years). Harry has stated they don't like being here and don't want to return. Why shouldn't the lovely Frogmore be put to better use.

It really isn't as dramatic and retaliatory as the media make it sound.

Incorrect, they were always allowed to stay at Frogmore until after the coronation and even if not I’m pretty sure they would be able to stay in one of the many many royal residences, they won’t be forced to stay at the local premier inn.

We were told they paid for the renovations, however if they actually had I’m amazed there hasn’t been a statement from Montecito demanding their money back, there is no way they would have stayed silent on that front, which leads me to believe either Charles has quietly refunded them, or Charles paid it in the first place but put into the public domain that H&M paid, I’m leaning towards the latter.

The only one deflecting is you, we have asked for proof that Thailand, Japan etc. are laughing stocks around the globe, we are still waiting……..

AliceOlive · 06/03/2023 15:08

@LadyVictoriaSponge Futile conversation. It’s hard to believe the criticism is sincere when it comes from someone who is a strong proponent of a Prince and his wife.

Without the Royal Family, we would never have known Harry’s name. Unless he married Meghan but then he’d just be Meghan Markle’s husband. Do you know the names of any husbands of actresses on any successful tv series? I can’t name any unless they are also in the entertainment industry. (Even then I can’t think of any good comparison actually.)

True and it was reported at the time of the payment it was for 18 months lease. That expired no later than Jan 23 (payment being around June 21)

So they've got a 6-month extension to original term (that's a whole third longer) apparently with no additional payment required. Jolly good deal from their pov

AliceOlive · 06/03/2023 15:25

I hope they do give them the cost of renovations back, minus market rent for the time they have had it. That seems fair.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 06/03/2023 15:40

@AliceOlive yes agree it is futile, I have far more respect for true republicans rather than pseudo ones who are staunch supporters of a Duke and Duchess.

Depends what the renovations were, if it was structural or fixing the electrics or something then fair enough with a reduction as the renovations are now 3 or 4 years old. If it is for designers wallpaper or deluxe kitchen cupboards hand carved by pixies at a cost of £100,000 then no I think that was their choice.

VixenTodd · 06/03/2023 15:46

I wonder if the Royal Family would have paid for a £33m wedding if they had realised that they were being used for their wealth and status? Oprah was already in talks with her before the wedding. It wasn't an unexpected or shock departure when it came around. The groundwork was at least 75% done to flee the scene and start trying to call the shots. Of course, it is denied.

Reckless, ignorant, self-serving... Prince Harry's words will cause huge harm, says psychiatrist DR MAX PEMBERTON

It’s absolutely appalling that a public figure has made these comments about drugs. What a terrible message it sends to young people. H must think he’s pretty fucking untouchable to discuss drug taking publicly.

Totally agree. He is so, so inappropriate in so many ways. Indiscreet, juvenile, clueless, narcissistic, spiteful.

I really think there is something seriously "off" about him that the RF heretofore were able to cover up.

His professional victimhood is getting old. Diana has been gone for 2/3 of his life; get on with it, already. My dad died in horrible circumstances too, and I don't parlay that into monetary gain and sympathy bids from everyone I encounter, or use as an excuse not to do anything productive with my life.

I had a postcard of M&H in a little frame in my living room from their engagement photos, till long after the wedding. (tongue in cheek but I generally wished them well and was excited for them). That's been binned.

Zero respect.

Anyone who think royalty is real has been conned .

Really?! Are they hologram projections? We should have been told....!

mixedrecycling · 06/03/2023 16:37

Given how few people are believers in C of E ceremonies, I doubt anyone sees the coronation as making Charles a 'quasi-God' 🙄so they are not being conned.

A hundred years ago, yes. But then Church-going and belief were a lot higher. What proportion of people in the UK today are C of E believers? And what proportion of those genuine believers would say that being consecrated with oil makes a spiritual difference instead of being a symbolic act? I suspect very few. Let's face it, Charles - why do you call him Chuck and feel the need to personally belittle him? - has said that he wants to be the defenders of all faiths. He recognises that other faiths are valid, but approaches the issue from the perspective of his own specific faith.

People aren't being conned. Most are quite intelligent enough to see that there are aspects of the ceremony that are traditional and not meant to be taken literally.
