If King Charles asked people not to boo the couple and did a deal with newspapers and TV to not print pictures of them or comment on their appearance, do you think they would come.

If there was a total news blackout where they were concerned (which I would just love!) so we didn't have to even see them, (apart from a passing glimpse), i think I could bear them coming. Daddy clearly want them there. Fatted calf and all that.

Would this get around the problem of them taking the spotlight away from the actual ceremony?

And I don’t believe people want publicity for shootings. The modus operandi now is to stifle any “fame” for the perpetrator as it “inspires” others.

pilates · 16/02/2023 13:01

Ignore my post - wrong thread

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/02/2023 13:02

You were correct, ThighMistress; it was Veterans Day, the US version of our Remembrance Day, except I believe it was reported that H&M went on 8th November rather than the 11th

How lucky that some paps happened along, just as they were there.

No, wait. They arranged for them to be there. Why, I wonder?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/02/2023 12:40

In US, MM is a private citizen. She has no role here. One can’t even claim she’s confused about that after a lifetime of being a UK Royal who needed to represent the family at times. It’s solely for her own publicity

Exactly, AliceOlive, except that I'm not sure she ever fully understood that she was there to represent the institution rather than herself

To be clear there's nothing wrong with a private citizen laying a tribute - I'd do it myself (and have) if I'm in the area - but most of are capable of leaving it at that rather than making sure our photogs have got the right picture

Exactly. I’m sure she had some genuine feelings, but so did the entire country. The visit and timing was narcissistic, even if unintentionally so.

The playground, too. A way to get credit for something that is not particularly helpful. You think a child that lost a sibling or lived through that horror is going to be helped by an extra playground? Then make it happen quietly, anonymously.

I am sure plenty were there already and would have been regardless of her presence. I also believe, as usual, that her people alerted press she was coming and that she posed to give the best angles.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/02/2023 12:20

She did (Uvalde) to raise her own profile

In fairness the rest of the RF do the same when visiting disaster areas, but at least they try not to make it quite so obvious

I was surprised not to see it included in the Netflix six parter though; maybe it's being saved for some future "look at us" production

The Monarch is our Head of State. Anyone from the working RF visiting these types of situations is representing the HoS and presenting the State's reaction to it and support for its victims. As Meghan was doing when she represented the HoS WRT Grenfell Tower.

Meghan in Uvalde was representing nobody other than herself.

This isn't aimed at you @Puzzledandpissedoff , but can people stop portraying the working RF as akin to a Hollywood sideshow. They are representatives of the UK State, not minor celebs trying to bandwagon a cause to raise their own profile.

Just watched a trailer. Hysterical and this says it all. South Park is genius and typically right on the mark.

jeffgoldblum · 16/02/2023 13:37

@AliceOlive , can I just say how much I liked your posts as an American.
I'm British and have wondered for sometime why no one has mentioned before why they think they need to turn up at public places and events in the U.S .
They are not ( as you say) elected officials and certainly royals (ex or not) have any role to play in the U.S , who have no monarchy.
But I've not seen this mentioned so succinctly before.

AliceOlive · 16/02/2023 13:45

@jeffgoldblum Thank you. I’ve both defended them and criticized them. I have tons of empathy for MM and her family situation. I know the media has been really cruel at times. I also understand they wanted to leave and need to earn a living.

I just think both have gone so way off the mark now, in a way that only happens when one refuses all advice from others. It’s as baffling as Trump’s hair.

jeffgoldblum · 16/02/2023 13:56

@AliceOlive , I'm not sure anything is as baffling as trumps hair! 🤣 .
I don't really like to criticise Meghan as I'm white and from the U.K. , it's a mind field of accusations, however Harry's behaviour of late is beyond words , I really believed the carefully crafted narrative about him , most popular, happy chappy royal .
It seems he's shown all this to be rubbish now .

purpledalmation · 16/02/2023 14:12

It's nice to have @AliceOlive's take in this. The couple rating in the Uk is extremely low, but at first everyone loved Meghan and Harry, me included. Zero idea why it had to become a competition or why it all fell down so quickly. I suspect Mm really had no idea what the job entailed and no understanding of the place the RF has in the country. She seems to have thought it was a celebrity package with bells on. Harry clearly didn't want to give her time (not on her side re child bearing) to see how it all worked as it would have scared her off. I feel quite sorry for MM as she was way out of her depth from the beginning. She did Harry a big favour by encouraging him to leave, because it's what he always wanted.

@AliceOlive "I am sure plenty were there already and would have been regardless of her presence."
Sorry, I wasn't clear - I was talking about the Remembrance Day trip to the cemetery.

AliceOlive · 16/02/2023 14:20

I truly think Harry didn’t understand how things worked.

A friend of mine moved to the UK from another country. He said it would take years to really grasp some of the differences.

He felt people in shops were really unfriendly. One day, he was with a friend in the shops and mentioned it. The friend say “Well you never say thank you that’s really rude here.”

He was really happy to learn this, and changed his approach right away. But he said in his culture, it would be very odd to go around thanking everyone constantly.

I think Harry probably had no way to know what Meghan would or wouldn’t know about Royal life. And she also didn’t know what she needed to learn.

notanotheroneagain · 16/02/2023 14:26

I'm not too sure the US tanking ratings narrative is even true.

Residents of Montecito have definitely posted their support recently, and so do a lot of Americans on SM in general.

As for the name changers who keep coming on here and telling us about an 'American view', well, they kind of remind me of that one who was writing essays and was in the UK when they H&M were here. In Canada when they were there. Later in the US when they were in the US.

Guess next they will have mixed race dc, just like MM.

Seriously now.........😂😂😂

H&M are being compared to sociopaths and murderers now?
The H&M hate universe is quite bizarre.

But not as bizarre as those (few) who, whatever H&M do, can't see them for the tone-deaf grifters they are.

I was not trying to "get" you. You posted 2 corrections and I thought you might actually care.

AliceOlive · 16/02/2023 14:47

I wrote a paper in college about people using humor to attempt to discredit others, specifically women. Your cartoon reminds me of that. Ditto for your constant use of emojis. It's hard to take anything you write seriously when you use the communication tools of a child rather than an adult.

As you are a person who volunteers with women and poc of color, your posts here show some gaps in your thinking and attitudes about others. Skullbabe already pointed out your very inappropriate reference to the "one drop rule". You've disparaged the looks and character of a private woman shoved into the limelight by Harry (Sasha Walpole). You've also referred to "plebs". I am sure you are different in person than you seem to be online, but that cartoon feels much more representative of you than me.

...waiting for the "stalker" comments next. Because remembering what someone posts over 48 hours and pointing out the obvious hypocrisy is called stalking here now.
