Harry claiming that Meghan can make her own clothes...

"He asked, “How much could it possibly cost to house and feed Meg? I wanted to say, ‘She doesn’t eat much, you know! And I’ll ask her to make her own clothes, if you like’.”"

(Page 370)^
^
For me, this was one of the strangest passages in the whole book. How could a self-made millionaire (Meghan) be so poor she would either need to have her FIL buy her clothes or she'd have to make them herself?

I'm not slagging off Meghan here BTW, as these are Harry's words, not hers. Why didn't Harry take responsibility for buying Meghan what she needed? Any decent husband would get a job to support his wife rather than see her not eat much and make her own clothes!

Really? @Serenster ?

Just how many figure skaters are at your DC school? How many were at your own school?

If you tell me football/rugby/hockey/tennis etc. as mainstream I may well believe.

Serenster · 27/01/2023 20:28

We had the national champion ladies skater at my school actually! Truth! 🤣

Figure-skating is a hugely popular international sport. It’s very strong in the US, Europe and and in Japan and Korea. The tops skaters are big international stars. You may be ignorant of this, but it’s absolutely true.

I don’t think that PC’s slimmed down monarchy was necessarily going to include PH. It maybe seemed to appear to include him (balcony appearances) when he was single as that would have seemed harsh, but I think that the idea was that if he was married, he wouldn’t be a senior working royal. Indicated by the suggestions by PC and HMTQ that H&M have a smaller wedding and live somewhere else in the commonwealth? Or possibly because both PC and HMTQ could see that neither PH or MM would be happy working as senior royals?

I think it was probably pretty clear to the Queen and Charles that being working Royals was not the best role for either of them. They should have thought about alternatives from the beginning and then the whole shit show that had resulted e have happened . The trouble is I think the notion of palaces, free clothes and lots of attention was the attraction for M in the first piece. She didn’t want to continue to be an actress and be married to Harry.

I know! It doesn't matter. I just don't understand why he's complaining about (lack) of money. But then again he thought the bin was talking, so who knows what's going on.

www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/g23929574/meghan-markle-maternity-style-fashion-photos/ A link to 60 maternity outfits, none of them a £120,000 shapeless tent. Still eye-wateringly expensive but nothing wrong with the style.

It’s quite pathetic to be discussing whether a pregnant woman’s dress was tent-like.

karamazing · 27/01/2023 20:57

I think that if pregnancy didn't suit me then I would not spend that much money on outfits to look like that. I understand the need to look presentable in her role (at the time) and the odd special occasion splurge but chucking money at it was pointless.

No it won't. It's good that she made a living in a cut throat career. You have to hustle to get work in acting, it's tough. Harry did, however, complain about lack of money and Charles cutting him off in the Oprah interview.

SenecaFallsRedux · 27/01/2023 21:29

Meghan was and is quite stylish. She has a difficult figure to fit (short waist and long legs), but most of her choices, especially for casual clothes, are quite successful, I think. She is a more adventurous dresser, and therefore more interesting from a fashion standpoint to my mind than most of the other women in the British RF. Being a bit more fashion forward and adventurous, she sometimes made (and still makes) choices that are not as successful than others, but when she hits the mark no one looks better.

Have not seen any complaints either.

At some point Harry says something like:

He took no offence, felt nothing about it, any of it, he didn't mind nor care . Succession was like the weather, no one could bother.

Throughout the book I don't feel any admiration for the institution. Just a rush of emotions and longing for a proper normal family.

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 27/01/2023 21:44

Megan looked very beautiful in her pregnancy photos

BlackFriday · 27/01/2023 22:14

I am no Meghan fan (nor Harry) but I am not going to criticise her dress sense. I think she looks great - she's a beautiful woman, no debate.
For sure, there have been one or two outfits that I don't think worked so well but the same applies to most people in the public eye, even Kate.

Maireas · 27/01/2023 22:38

I agree with @SenecaFallsRedux and we've discussed Meghan's style regularly on another thread. I think she is stylish and I really like her choice of colours and how she wears different cuts and shapes. Her casual clothes always look great, but I think some of the formal wear looked fabulous. Early in her royal career she was pregnant, so obviously it got tricky, but for the most part she looked great. She can carry off bright strong colours.

Maireas · 27/01/2023 22:40

@IwasToldThereWouldBeCake
I agree

It was the beige Dior couture dress (photo number 9) that was reported to have cost over £100,000. It was widely reported at the time, and spectacularly expensive for a dress worn just once.

You could buy a house in my area for £100K. It would be modest but would fit two people and their children comfortably. Sadly, it is out of reach of many. But this woman spent that amount on some cloth to cover her nakedness for one day. And we are meant to think she is a philanthropist?

MarshaMelrose · 28/01/2023 00:40

No, my employer would pay my severance.

Harry said Charles supported him until end of June 2020. I think that is very generous since they all but checked out December 2019. That's a lot more than I ever got. My severance was holidays that I'd earned but hadn't managed to take. Who gets paid an extra six months wages?

This. They should come back from their own galaxy back down to earth. Daddy cut me off was what did it. After a year of doing what?

Yep. Totally agree. 100k is a lifetime savings for some lucky ones.

Looks pretty tent like to me. You may think that pathetic, and you are quite entitle to your opinion. As I am to mine.

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 28/01/2023 09:32

*entitled

LadyWithLapdog · 28/01/2023 09:36

I’m sure you can find a tent-like dress for KM as well. She was fucking pregnant. Give it a break. It’s bitchiness when you pile on a woman just because. Like the classic disparity in reporting between MM and KM cradling their bumps, eating avocado etc.

I agree about the disgust at the prices, and that’s for whoever wears couture. Though I’m glad high fashion is around, as I think we need art and experiment and clever design.

LadyWithLapdog · 28/01/2023 09:37

Oops, I found a tent. Just don’t look at the face.
