Harry claiming that Meghan can make her own clothes...

"He asked, “How much could it possibly cost to house and feed Meg? I wanted to say, ‘She doesn’t eat much, you know! And I’ll ask her to make her own clothes, if you like’.”"

(Page 370)^
^
For me, this was one of the strangest passages in the whole book. How could a self-made millionaire (Meghan) be so poor she would either need to have her FIL buy her clothes or she'd have to make them herself?

I'm not slagging off Meghan here BTW, as these are Harry's words, not hers. Why didn't Harry take responsibility for buying Meghan what she needed? Any decent husband would get a job to support his wife rather than see her not eat much and make her own clothes!

People keep saying this but how? She earned a couple of million from suits fair enough, but over I think it’s nine years. That’s very nice salary money, not self made millions. She had to live on it. She has very expensive tastes. She didn’t own a house.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/01/2023 01:07

How is she a self made millionaire? (Other than by marrying him)

People add up her salary per episode of Suits by the x number of years she was in it.

Which adds up to a few million.

However, they never subtract tax, agent/PR fees, rent, food, stylist fees, money spent on clothes, holidays, food, living costs etc.

I think she had a contract for a couple of years to be the face of a clothing store in Canada - which would have paid her some thousands.

I have no idea what her net worth would have been when she met Harry, but I doubt she was a multi millionaire.

MrsFinkelstein · 26/01/2023 09:39

Also, she was in a couple of Hallmark movies - I have no idea what they pay but its not millions.

And her divorce settlement from her 1st marriage.

She would have been very comfortable (& well off in my eyes) but not uber rich IYKWIM (not couture fashion level spending).

Trousers draping on the floor. Terrible. Oh no, wrong person. Stylish and classy.

I don't understand why no one told him not to put this kind of shit in the book. I mean a grown man who is financially supported by his father and pissed off he is having to ask for his wife allowance is really weird. I mean, yeah it happens but to admit it 😬

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 26/01/2023 15:16

Why can't Haz bring Megs to TK Max with him, and fill up their baskets in there?

The story about her being wealthy was spun by the Sussex camp to promote her as being 'good enough' to marry a wealthy Prince.
If they had been honest about her financial situation then the claims about using him for his money and status would have been wilder.

Well, you seem to be leaving out quite a lot there.

You have no idea how much she was paid by the shop, she had her own clothing capsule. Was she also not a face for some car company? Anyway she did a lot of adverts.

She had over 2M followers and made money on that and was invited to the likes of NYC mayor event to cook etc. on the back of that. Big events that would have paid a lot.

Also, you have no idea if she actually spent money on her accommodation, living expenses etc. since she would have been hired as expat in Toronto by Suits - who later paid for her security. TV shows will usually cover your costs if you are overseas/another country.

While unconfirmed, on the internet a cost of closer to 100K was quoted for her short appearance as a bartender. I did believe it , because a non-talking walkby extra will get 2-4K. Short as her role was, it would have taken days to shoot, with cuts and editing making it seem shorter. Sometimes people get paid for an appearance, that annoyingly ends up on the editor's floor.

On her Tig, MM also had an extensive wardrobe, from freebies she would promote. Did you see her shoe collection?

She had agents etc. I can see how her accountant can invest her money.

notanotheroneagain · 27/01/2023 10:49

Posters are pretending Charles thought she was costing a lot money.

The conversation was before they got married. Harry clearly says, 'oh, she will be working with me'. Charles says he has no money.

Harry goes on to say, C was not funding them out of largesse. That was his job. That was the whole deal. We agreed to serve the monarch, go wherever we were sent, do as told, surrender autonomy, keep within the gilded cage who would in turn feed and clothe them.

Considering how rich the Dutchy is, Harry thought it was more than just about money. Bet there was 'advice' given to Charles.

H&M had concluded that his inheritance was for their DC. I can see how they could feel like that about MM's money too.

At the point when H is cut off financially he laments that, after a lifetime of service, he was suddenly cut off without redundancy pay. He says, people don't understand that Charles was not just his father, he was also his banker/employer/controller.

BlackFriday · 27/01/2023 11:04

"lifetime of service," my arse!!
Meghan racked up about 18 months and Harry not much more once an adult and outside his military service, for which he was paid.

notanotheroneagain · 27/01/2023 11:07

Harry was shepherded in as a baby like the Cambridge children. That's work! (as far as you will say royals work).
He should not have been followed around then if he was not part of it. Just like Margaret's children - no one should have known or cared who he is then.

Maireas · 27/01/2023 16:20

So, he stopped working for them, he stopped getting the money.
Your employer wouldn't keep paying you if you went for a new life in California.
It's Harry's choice not to spend his mother's millions or the inheritance from the Queen Mother.

She owned no property. Property is the most stable investment one can make.

I didn't say she wasn't wealthy - but she was definitely at the lower end of the scale.

2M followers isn't THAT high level.

A local figure skater in my area has 1.8M. I guarantee she's not making much money from them.

karamazing · 27/01/2023 18:58

She was not wealthy. It is positive spin by her supporters to make it seem like Harry had landed a prized goddess. It helped to quash legit concerns about gold-digging. It doesn't matter now. She doesn't need to address that she faked it because she is now legitimately rich through selling out Harry's family.

No, my employer would pay my severance. Based on how much they used me.

Figure skating has to be the most niche sports you can think of, do they get invited to NY mayor's do. Are face of car and clothes companies. While at the same time acting in movies and series. I wish them all these, tbh. But that is not what real life is.

2M was also on one platform.

She even had an agent for her SM presence.

Maireas · 27/01/2023 19:44

Really? I'm a teacher and wouldn't get severance. If you leave your job normally you only get paid up until you quit.

Maireas · 27/01/2023 19:45

Well if Meghan was so rich, why is Harry complaining? Between his millions and hers you'd think they'd be ok.

BlackFriday · 27/01/2023 19:47

Well, she must have been earning quite a lot because it's not cheap to go holidaying on yachts, is it?

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 27/01/2023 19:48

Powertoyou · 25/01/2023 20:21

I think Megan proves that money can’t buy taste. Her clothes never looked ‘wow’. Dress hemlines longer than the coat. Trousers draping on the floor. Heavy canvas dresses tied in the middle. Brown trousers and polo neck to visit the Canadian embassy. Nothing special.
Ah well Harry loves her.

She never seemed to be able to buy a bra that fitted properly either!

And then there was that hideous couture dress she wore whilst heavily pregnant, when visiting an Arab country I believe it was? Was an ugly, beige, shapeless tent that apparently cost £120,000. I always got the impression with Meghan the clothes weren't bought with looking good in mind, but more with saying to people "look what I've got".

That depends on how you define wealthy. She had assets worth somewhere between $3-5 million based on various estimates, some of which are verifiable via the public record. And she earned it herself so in that since, she was "self-made."

Snort. You do love making pronouncements about things you clearly know nothing about. Yuzuru Hanyu has been internationally lauded and was the sixth most-google searched sports figure last year, just behind Djokovic, Nadal and Serena Williams. He has a huge global fame with loads of endorsements, campaigns and projects. Ever heard of Yuna Kim? Katrina Witt? Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding? Torvill & Dean?
