Harry claiming that Meghan can make her own clothes...

"He asked, “How much could it possibly cost to house and feed Meg? I wanted to say, ‘She doesn’t eat much, you know! And I’ll ask her to make her own clothes, if you like’.”"

(Page 370)^

For me, this was one of the strangest passages in the whole book. How could a self-made millionaire (Meghan) be so poor she would either need to have her FIL buy her clothes or she'd have to make them herself?

I'm not slagging off Meghan here BTW, as these are Harry's words, not hers. Why didn't Harry take responsibility for buying Meghan what she needed? Any decent husband would get a job to support his wife rather than see her not eat much and make her own clothes!

After she’s fashioned her clothes from some old, sturdy but practical (bit of a 70s garish pattern but no one’s looking too closely) curtains in Buckingham Palace she’ll sweep the yard…She’ll stitch carefully by hand. No sewing machines for her!

Later, she can cleanse & refresh them in the palace well, those washer/dryers have a v negative environmental footprint…Shows green credentials!

She’ll sing & dance as she does so & bluebirds will gently come to rest on her head & hands…puppies will frolic & gambol, if you listen, very closely all the seals in the world will chorus ‘AROO’ together…Where is her prince, her love today? Notes to herself she must hide/destroy all the dog bowls in kingdom - ancient Legend tells ‘he who toucheth or falleth on ye old ceramic dogbowls shall fall & die & necklace shall breaketh & shall needeth therapist as shards shall be injurious and enchanted’. Does she spy the sexy suave shame I didn’t have first dibs King in waiting, Willy the Wicked on the horizon?…

Oh this is brilliant! More please! Grin

Context us everything. In the book Harry made this comment in response to his father saying he couldn't support H & M as he was already paying for W & C. It was meant to be sarcastic. He thought it but didn't express it.

Yeah, people on here would rather pretend that he actually said it though

comrad · 24/01/2023 21:42

No one’s pretending, it’s in black and white in his book, the sentiment is quite clear to most of us. Him meaning it sarcastically doesn’t make him sound good btw. It makes him sounds petulant and entitled. And kinda pathetic. Why wasn’t their first instinct to provide for themselves? The royals had already suggested she continue working rather than become another hanger-on.

Coronateachingagain · 24/01/2023 22:01

Harry forgot to mention that his father forked out 100k for his wife to be engagement dress.... talk about making her own clothes 😅

Capri3 · 24/01/2023 22:14

I don’t think that PC’s slimmed down monarchy was necessarily going to include PH. It maybe seemed to appear to include him (balcony appearances) when he was single as that would have seemed harsh, but I think that the idea was that if he was married, he wouldn’t be a senior working royal. Indicated by the suggestions by PC and HMTQ that H&M have a smaller wedding and live somewhere else in the commonwealth? Or possibly because both PC and HMTQ could see that neither PH or MM would be happy working as senior royals?

I think that was the initial (poor) translation from the Spanish book. The quote in the OP is the accurate one.

That makes a lot more sense, thank you.

I can’t believe PC even said this. He’s a rich bastard and makes no sense. Just another imaginary stick to beat his father with perhaps

Oodieoodieoodie · 25/01/2023 02:02

@Peverellshire 😂

HelloBunny · 25/01/2023 02:09

I think she has a penchant for posh frocks, which KC was not willing to bankroll. Kate re-wears things. Has same shoes on rotation. Not always top designer gear. I know Kate wears v experience ball gowns to events etc... But I think Meghan was taking the piss. Her baby shower extravaganza seemed to be the turning point for her with royal family / public approval.

I’d also say that she “didn’t eat very much” at all of the top restaurants.

pilates · 25/01/2023 07:01

@Peverellshire hilarious 😂

SilverGlitterBaubles · 25/01/2023 07:07

Of course Saint Meghan is just a simple California girl who identifies a lot with Cinderella

grumpytoddler1 · 25/01/2023 07:18

Yes, it was obviously meant in a sarcastic manner. But it fell completely flat on its face didn't it, because she spent more of Charles' money on her wardrobe than any other royal. I seem to recall it costing several hundreds of thousands to clothe Meghan each year.

PinkTonic · 25/01/2023 07:32

You can’t take seriously anything Harry says about his family’s reaction to Meghan because Harry is completely and utterly besotted with her and doesn’t grasp that it could even be possible that anyone could see her differently. Any response to her other than adulation and awe is perceived as an insult. Any caution towards the relationship, which was clearly covered in red flags, is a slur on them both. He actually moaned elsewhere in the book that it was unfair that in order to become ‘a household’ like the Cambridges did when they got married, his only option was to get married. Shock, horror. It’s entirely probable that a perfectly sensible conversation about their living expenses went down like a lead balloon with Harry.

milveycrohn · 25/01/2023 07:44

Meghan had expensive tastes in designer wear, that Charles was paying for.
No way was she going to make her own clothes, as she always had to wear a 'label' of some kind.
Making your own clothes is expensive, anyway.
It is another example of Harry not having a clue what he is talking about.

MrsFinkelstein · 25/01/2023 07:58

Didn't Charles make the comment to Harry after Meghan spent $75k on an engagement dress?

I'll put my hands up and admit I could be misremembering, and could have gotten my timeline mixed up ( & I can't be arsed rereading any of that again).

MrsFinkelstein · 25/01/2023 07:59

An engagement dress that Charles had paid for - forgot to clarify that part.

mixedrecycling · 25/01/2023 08:04

I read that as C trying to raise the subject of M's expensive tastes and the unrealistic expectation that C would continue to meet them.

H completely missing the point, and then being sarcastic (in his head, which didn't help resolve the misunderstanding).

stevalnamechanger · 25/01/2023 08:05

It was sarcasm ...

This really struck me in the book. He is adamant that she (and he) was just lovely to everyone and so many people just took against her for no reason. You don't have staff leaving, bullying complaints, William saying she's rude, staff complaining to William etc. if you are lovely to everyone. You just don't. Maybe the pair of them were in a very stressful situation and took it out on the staff, but I think it is clear, even from his own account, that they were not very nice to people.

It was loaned no?

It’s a sarcastic joke.

Poppingboba · 25/01/2023 09:56

It implies that he really, really believes that she was marrying him for love and she would be happy living in a treehouse dressed in animal hide to prove her love for him. She has been forced to live in a humble mega-mansion for an abode and wear a multi million pound wardrobe.

stevalnamechanger · 25/01/2023 08:05

It was loaned no?

Not that I can see - from all the information I can find online it gives the cost of the dress, designer & collection. Nothing that I can see says it was loaned.

If you have a link that clarifies that it was loaned that would be appreciated.

AttentionAll · 25/01/2023 11:36

It cost £56,000, it was 70,000 dollars.
The articles say the photographer was getting Meghan to try on various dresses for the photo. It is certainly implied these may not be hers, but just ones provided for a professional photo.
But if it was Meghan's dress, she can spend her own money however she wants.
