"He asked, “How much could it possibly cost to house and feed Meg? I wanted to say, ‘She doesn’t eat much, you know! And I’ll ask her to make her own clothes, if you like’.”"

For me, this was one of the strangest passages in the whole book. How could a self-made millionaire (Meghan) be so poor she would either need to have her FIL buy her clothes or she'd have to make them herself?

I'm not slagging off Meghan here BTW, as these are Harry's words, not hers. Why didn't Harry take responsibility for buying Meghan what she needed? Any decent husband would get a job to support his wife rather than see her not eat much and make her own clothes!

How does that compare with what Kate spent? Or rather, what she spent in her first year of royal engagements, if it costs more to set things up from scratch?
And how much did the Queen spend?

trucklebrunch · 25/01/2023 14:40

It definitely costs a lot to start setting up a royal wardrobe from scratch, first couple of years (especially with royal tours) would cost a lot.

It's not really about comparing costs of royal wardrobes though, the point is that her expensive wardrobe was well funded and Charles paid for her to be very well dressed - referring to Charles not being willing to pay, or Meghan making her own clothes is just silly and clearly not accurate (the price tags speak fir themselves!)

The dress she wore for her engagement photos was estimated to cost £56K, double the average national wage in UK....makes me balk at Harry's words 'She doesn’t eat much, you know! And I’ll ask her to make her own clothes'

SenecaFallsRedux · 25/01/2023 14:44

I have read the book. The comment is meant sarcastically, which is pretty obvious from the context.

trucklebrunch · 25/01/2023 14:47

It certainly is a ridiculous statement.

And saying Charles refused to pay for her clothes is obviously untrue....she had an amazing designer wardrobe.

BlackFriday · 25/01/2023 14:48

Yes, of course it's meant sarcastically but it just comes across as snarky, petulant and immature. I'd expect that sort of response from Kevin the Teenager, not a Duke approaching his 40s.

Remagirl · 25/01/2023 14:50

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story though. He didn't actually vocalise his sarcastic thoughts either. The story is a bit 'poor me' however I get how bitter he must feel being shafted by the press and his own family. Can't help feeling there is a lot of payback for his mum's treatment too.

BlackFriday · 25/01/2023 15:03

"He didn't actually vocalise his sarcastic thoughts either."

He literally included it in his book!! And his attempt at "payback" looks very much to me as though it is back-firing.

entirelyesspresso · 25/01/2023 15:07

He published these sarky thoughts in a book - if that's not vocalising then I don't know what is!?

Remagirl · 25/01/2023 15:10

I can't say I blame him. I have done a complete u turn in terms of my thinking. I hope the exposure brings a new perspective for people. I also hope the media focus shifts to the dodgy uncle who should be in prison.

pilates · 25/01/2023 17:40

It’s definitely changed my perspective on people and that is H & M. In the current climate, how they have the gall to whinge and moan when people are struggling to put food on the table and heat their homes is beyond me. Let alone a war going on in Ukraine. I find their arrogance quite breathtaking.

coodawoodashooda · 25/01/2023 17:53

I'm so sick of him and that book.

BlackFriday · 25/01/2023 19:32

I often find that when people say, "Ah but you'd change your mind if you knew what I know," I rarely do. Their supposed slam dunk of evidence is never what they think it is and so it has transpired with Harry's "revelations."
He's dug deep to find a whole load of trivial bits of nonsense, tried to dramatise them and failed miserably.
He's revealed a lot, but not what he thinks. We can now just see him for the spiteful, petulant and paranoid brat that he really is.

Also, he's literally voiced them in umpteen interviews!

GOD NOT AGAIN !!!!!

Bit of an overreaction 🙄

Powertoyou · 25/01/2023 20:21

I think Megan proves that money can’t buy taste. Her clothes never looked ‘wow’. Dress hemlines longer than the coat. Trousers draping on the floor. Heavy canvas dresses tied in the middle. Brown trousers and polo neck to visit the Canadian embassy. Nothing special.
Ah well Harry loves her.

Bit of an overreaction 🙄

For some reason lately there's always one person who comes onto RF threads, expresses exasperation that we're still talking about PH and The Book and then disappears. No idea what, if anything, they get out of it.

TimeToFlyNow · 25/01/2023 21:37

Well if it was said it sounds like it was before they got married so nothing to do with her spending at that time. Seems like Charles did pay after all, although I'm sure I read that she bought her own engagement dress.

I do not know much about Royal wardrobes but I'd expect that they cost a fair bit to start off. But it's not like the RF are short of a few bob

She couldn't really have kept working on suits after moving over here , if she did I'm sure she would have had negative comments about it. I think all the media interest would have made it really hard if she had managed to get an acting job over here .

trucklebrunch · 25/01/2023 14:06

On 2019 Meghan spend £947 000 on clothes - paid by Charles from the Dutchy of Cornwall.

All of which appeared to no longer fit after she had had Archie. I can definitely identify with the difficulties of a post-baby body but imagine having a million quids worth of stuff that you've worn once and now can't squeeze into.

Heronswater · 25/01/2023 23:20

Well I think they should both now make all public appearances dressed in handstitched dirndls and lederhosen made out of floral curtains, Sound of Music-style.

Possibly accessorised with a few brown paper packages tied up with string.

LadyWithLapdog · 25/01/2023 23:41

I can’t believe the ongoing bitchiness about MM’s taste in clothes. Ok, maybe you wouldn’t dress in brown for an invitation at the Canadian embassy. But how about you wait till you’re invited, put some photos up, and let the bitchfest begin.

Also, it sounds like this is the first book some of you have read in quite some time if you don’t get sarcasm and context.

If you willingly go into the public eye abd are happy to accept plaudits, and awards, then I don't see why you shouldn't be liable for criticism too.

People understand sarcasm, but they also recognise its just a cover for yet another load of hard done by whingeing. Did anyone ever have a more miserable life than Harry?! (Ooop, sarcasm there - I'm whinging about Harry. See how it works?)

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/01/2023 01:07

How is she a self made millionaire? (Other than by marrying him)

TimeToFlyNow · 26/01/2023 01:31

She was worth an estimated €5 million before she met him
