This was in a yougov poll. Support for the monarchy is at an all time low amongst younger people.

Source?

If true, I think that probably reflects on how poorly educated and ignorant of our constitution and history young people are today.

Precipice · 19/01/2023 16:41

You think support for democracy is indicative of poor knowledge of history? What an odd view.

Serenster · 19/01/2023 16:46

There’s been much derision at YouGov polls here, babsanderson, when they have demonstrated Harry and Meghan’s precipitous decline in popularity. So it’s quite the whiplash moment now seeing them being presented as an authoritative source. 🤣

(And is that a surprise? I wouldn’t have thought so. People tend to become more in favour of a monarchy as they get older, that’s been a trend for a very long time now).

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 19/01/2023 16:48

Good for them. Won't happen.

yep made me laugh as well!

MrsFinkelstein · 19/01/2023 16:56

This is also from the most recent YouGov poll.

Harry & Meghan's popularity at an all time low.

52% of 18-24 year olds want monarchy abolished
babsanderson · 19/01/2023 16:57

"Young Britons were still clearly in favour of the monarchy as recently as two years ago. Across our polls in 2019 – the year of Prince Andrew’s catastrophic Newsnight appearance – approaching half of 18-24 year olds (46%) were in favour of the monarchy. Only a quarter (26%) preferred an elected state head."

Interesting how those who voted Leave in 2016 are only half as likely to be positive about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex than those who voted Remain.

Ncgirlseriously · 19/01/2023 16:59

Honestly I’m surprised it’s only 52%. I do think with the Queen dying a lot of people are thinking about the point of it all.

babsanderson · 19/01/2023 17:03

It has dropped substantially in only two years. I am guessing that is with the death of the Queen.

Coxspurplepippin · 19/01/2023 17:12

The same poll shows 67% overall in favour of the monarchy. Perhaps people change their minds as they get older and wiser.

babsanderson · 19/01/2023 17:22

@Coxspurplepippin Maybe? Or maybe as older people die off the number of people who want the monarchy abolished will increase?

If we're talking polls, seems like H&M need to work on their popularity in the US.

In my late teens / early 20s I didn't get the point of the RF either. I mean I never thought what I'd replace them with or how that would work. I never gave consideration to the positives of a RF. Cos you don't when you're so young. Then you grow up and you start to see problems with elected politicians, other elected heads of states. You start to appreciate the stability of a monarch.
Only on MN is there such an obsession with how wise our young people are. When actually they are just as narrow minded, uninformed and easily influenced as we all were at that age.

babsanderson · 19/01/2023 18:12

@MarshaMelrose Wow that is so patronising towards young people.
When I was young I was meh about the Royal Family. Then I got older and learned more and realised what a bunch of crooks they are.

You say patronising. I say realistic.
Even you say you changed your opinion when you grew up.

Exactly my thoughts. Was ambivalent when you young, thought Queen seemed a good sort. Now I think its a fucking con. 36 palaces ffs. Andrew living the life of Riley and Charles waffling on about sustainability whilst heating said palaces and flying about in a helicopter. Nope.

Agree, except it’s not just on MN. This idea that the youth know best and their immature, excitable ideas should take precedence and lead to actual law and policy change, is everywhere and has been for a couple of decades. Beyond tiresome.

Yep. Their popularity is tanking. What do you think of that poll OP?

Sugarfree23 · 19/01/2023 18:22

@MarshaMelrose I agree with you. People at so ignorant to the role the Monarch plays.
And young people are especially easily influenced not really understanding how the world works. That's exactly the reason SNP dropped voting age to 16. More young people to vote for independence without thinking through all the issues it would cause.(10x worse than brexit)

IntentionalError · 19/01/2023 18:24

That’s a depressingly low figure. What hope is there when even half of young people don’t think the British people should be able to choose their head of state, like they do in France? Or Ireland. Or Germany, Poland, Austria, Italy, the US etc etc.

EnglishRose1320 · 19/01/2023 18:27

It's depressing that it isn't higher.

Maybe because they look at France, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Austria, Italy and the US and don't their system is any better than here. We already elect tons of politicians, why elect more?

babsanderson · 19/01/2023 18:57

It costs way less.
We could have voted Andrew out.
Doubt Charles would ever have been elected either.

Coxspurplepippin · 19/01/2023 18:59

Well someone elected Boris Johnson, so anything's possible, no?
