This was in a yougov poll. Support for the monarchy is at an all time low amongst younger people.

As I think right to buy is to a large extent the cause of the current housing crisis, I can’t see anything wrong with that personally.

That's a totally separate point though and one I am totally in agreement with you on. He tried and succeeded in pulling rank secretly to benefit his own interests. Indeed he has been accused of profiteering as a landlord in that respect.

So the only examples are women who were not then members of the Royal Family?

Not sure of your point. Diana and Kate were both brought to tears by media harassment. Isn't their experience worthy enough for you?Meghan and Harry, in their docudrama, didn't have footage of themselves being harassed by the media so they had to use footage of the media with other celebs. So they don't appear to have been that badly affected.

clyspa · 20/01/2023 14:41

Don't care

There’s been much derision at YouGov polls here, babsanderson, when they have demonstrated Harry and Meghan’s precipitous decline in popularity. So it’s quite the whiplash moment now seeing them being presented as an authoritative source. 🤣

(And is that a surprise? I wouldn’t have thought so. People tend to become more in favour of a monarchy as they get older, that’s been a trend for a very long time now).

I think the point being made was if M&H are no longer working royals and not even in the country - and very unlikely to come back why have them on the UK gov polls anyway. It doesn't seem like they are working their way back anytime soon - And the view was it seems it is to ensure that Camilla is not just one up from Andrew. So in effect to make Camilla look more popular than she is.

Anyway ... why do we have them on the UK polls?

I think they think there is no issue as she was 17 years old and poor. So does not matter.

“They” didn’t pay for Andrew’s security, we did. Now we’re not. As a taxpayer I’m not prepared to pay for security for a multi millionaire couple who don’t live in the U.K.

As to the Queen’s behaviour, if I was in my mid 90s knowing how short my time was I wouldn’t want to cast out one of my children either. I don’t suppose many people would if they were honest.

urrrgh46 · 20/01/2023 15:06

yeah - they'll grow up and realise that a constitutional monarchy has to be better than having a president. i would absolutely hate to be like USA!!

Happyvalleyfan · 20/01/2023 12:04

Please can you point out other members of the RF who do not get security but got harassed like H&M did? Would be interested to know if there are others being left to defend themselves against the wolf pack of paparazzi to the same extent they were.

Can you show us a picture of Meghan and Harry on British soil being surrounded and hounded by the paparazzi and having to defend themselves? I doubt it very much seeing as neither Meghan or Harry could find anything either for their Netflix show and had to show footage of Katie Price being hounded whilst trying to pull it off as themselves.

That picture is of Meghan at her baby shower in the US and the other is the public with their mobiles on official duties in the UK! Try harder.

Soontobe60 · 20/01/2023 15:46

babsanderson · 19/01/2023 18:57

It costs way less.
We could have voted Andrew out.
Doubt Charles would ever have been elected either.

Voted him ‘out’ of what, exactly? You can’t vote a person out of being someone’s son FFS. He wasn’t voted ‘in’ to start with.
Some people have weird ideas 😂

Serenster · 20/01/2023 15:52

That picture is of Meghan at her baby shower in the US

Which was set up with barriers and a carpet at the front of the hotel for Meghan’s arrival despite there being a secure and private underground car park entrance. And moreover leaked to the US press in advance.

babsanderson · 20/01/2023 15:58

I know it is at engagements. The papparazzi take photos all the time. But the security look after them.

OP posts:
Serenster · 20/01/2023 16:01

The papparazzi take photos all the time

Not at UK engagements they don’t. Due to the Royal Rota system they only have a few reporters and photographers allowed to cover them.

Novella4 · 20/01/2023 16:25

Why in earth have Harry and Meghan been included in a 'royals' poll when they left the country 3 years ago ?

Could it be that they are being used to attempt to bump up popularity of the remaining dullards ?

Oh and as for the election of a president being expensive- what bullshit

Even if it wasn't added on to general elections the costs are dwarfed by the costs of the monarchy - never mind trying to add in the costs the 'royals ' keep hidden .
Plus the added revenue of all the palaces being open to paying visitors
So if you are a royalist - pick a different argument as you'll never win a cost effectiveness argument , never mind the ethical argument of representation and the fact that there is no law that you must have a president at all!

Source?

If true, I think that probably reflects on how poorly educated and ignorant of our constitution and history young people are today.

Rubbish

It shows the young are less brainwashed by mainstream media

babsanderson · 20/01/2023 16:37

@Novella4 I agree. Harry and Meghan are no longer Royal Family members. They are irrelevant.

No they either don't consume news at all, or get their 'news' from social media Hmm

They certainly are Grin

However, as they seem to want to maintain their titles and monetise their rf connection, they obviously see themselves as royals still.

rookiemere · 20/01/2023 17:02

That means 48% of young people don't want the monarchy abolished, which is a higher percentage than I expected.

I'm no great RF fan to be fair, but surely experience has taught us not to make sweeping reforms on the basis of a 52/48 count.

By the number of MN RF threads relating to M&H as well as tabloid news, comments and Twitter - I don't think you actually believe they are irrelevant- wishful thinking maybe.

When Posters stop starting duplicate threads on them and restrain themselves from commenting on anything they do or don't do - idiotic threads such as "Where is Meghan ???"Hmm then they may be heading towards being irrelevant - until then you will continue to ensure they stay relevant

But 20 something percent of those actually said they dont know, which isn't really the same as support

Rubbish

Even more mature adults I've come across are surprised how much power the monarch technically has and when it's been used as well the more nebulous soft power.

Our unwritten constitution is a tangled mess that evolved over time and has entwined in it is the monarchy - it's not really taught in UK schools very well if at all - and there's so much UK history it can't all be covered - I was taught more about Tudor's than English civil war or act of settlement and the chartist movement is only something I'm really aware of in last decade. In the year of the recentish suffragette anniversary DD1 as teenager was shocked her peers had no real idea about the movement.

DH and I sort of picked up a lot of knowledge as we pass though life - as it hits news as we read or see TV programs on history topic or law.

Harry is still in line of succession though I don't know who had paid for these polls or why I image they are there because they are in the news at the moment - and including them also raises profile of polsters as they get quoted in newspapers - free publicity.
