Strangest bits in Spare…

i haven’t quite finished it yet but I wanted to read a thread about some of the weirder bits of Spare, and I haven’t seen a thread where people were discussing those without the ‘H&M’ vs the rest of the RF debate. There are definitely some parts which have made me really question why they were included, and I was wondering if anyone else had any similar thoughts.

The inclusion of the imagery of the poppy fields, and how heroin funds the Taliban. Fair enough. We all know that. The rest of the book is one long ode to posh people taking drugs. Does Prince Harry think the cocaine he takes is gently knitted by fairies and delivered to him by unicorns? Do the drugs he takes not contribute to war and terrorism and misery across the rest of the world (and indeed misery and crime in the UK, where he is 5th in line to be monarch!) I found this quite a strange passage and I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts, or am I just over thinking it?

Elizabeth Arden cream. ‘Mummy’s lips’. ‘Todger’. Why? But really, why? Why was this included? Why did anyone think it or commit it to paper, and then publish it? Why did I read it? Why am I typing it here? ARGH.

What he actually thinks the relationship between the royal family and the press should actually be. Only reporting true things? Someone had a photo of him taking cocaine. Dressed as a nazi. Calling his colleague a ‘P*ki’. He wasn’t happy, but it was all true. Should journalists not be allowed to report true things? Or should they only be reporting things he wants them to report? Does Andrew get to choose that too? What about everyone else?

What the actual royal family should look like. This was mind bending. He seems to be perfectly happy with the idea of the monarchy, an institution which is predicated on the idea that they’re inherently superior to the rest of us, and that’s their birth right, but seems to massively struggle to apply that to himself and William. If a monarchy is the best system, why shouldn’t the heir be treated differently to the spare? (I don’t believe it is the best system and wish we could abolish them all but I don’t understand how one can believe one but not the other!).

Anyone else have any interesting thoughts?

It's really odd - especially considering that he has never actually been the "spare". Throughout his life he was number 3 - Charles was the heir and William the spare and ever since George was born, almost 10 years ago, he has had almost not role as a "spare".

So since his late 20s he could have carved out his own role ... but didn't

@Lunde it’s a form of hypersensitivity & jealousy & entrenched bitterness, sadly. I think it’s because he was often fall guy & painted blackly. He wanted to be first & favoured.

He needed Charles, or someone who loved him, to have a v serious chat on it post Diana’s death. It prob didn’t help Eton being wrong fit & him feeling dim there (shades if Diana).

Added to that, the longevity of monarchs tends to delay the moment of ruling, until old age and a hot water bottle beckon.

The sneering at the History teacher and the matron are just horrible. It really gives an insight into his character. Snobbish, arrogant , unpleasant .

This is the man who sets himself up as a modern day guru, come to teach us all how to live. No thanks.

I was flicking through some first edition commemorative stamps in a box at Oxfam earlier. There's a set from 2000 commemorating the Queen Mum's 100th birthday and depicted her, Liz, Charles and William - the line of succession. There was another set from 2003 depicting William on his 21st birthday - looking very much like Diana. Harry (and all the other spares) must have been very used to this sort of thing - the line of succession being paramount. It's so odd that Harry got so mad at the picture Elizabeth had on her desk in her last years of the line of succession.

I watched the Neflix programme about his mother's step mother Raine at the weekend, which helps explain how Dian and then her son were/are in a sense.

We all say silly or personal things in private that might be considered weird things if exposed in print. I can hear DH downstairs talking to the dog in a funny voice for instance.

I asked about the singing on another thread - I heard a clip but it must be a spoof? It's so bad, surely nobody would willingly let that see the light of day.

Nope, it’s for real. That’s how deranged this guy is, suppose it’s what happens after a lifetime of being literally applauded for just being being born and continuing to survive, he believes his own hype. Despite his railing against the monarchy Harry still believes he is special because he was born a prince. Unless he rejects the whole institution he cannot escape that inherent hypocrisy.

Yes it’s the hypocrisy that attracts all the criticism. I don’t doubt that the rest of his privileged family are also entitled, but they have the good sense not to start complaining about their station in life and lecturing us plebs.

The singing leads me to believe he’s surrounded by sycophants. It’s so bad but you can tell he thinks it’s good.

I want to find it on You Tube but I bet there are so many piss-takes ...

Gawd, his singing is actually worse than mine, which is saying something.. And I haven't tried to sing on an audiobook that people have paid good money for.
