The royal family

Harry had little access to money

Harry was given Nottingham Cottage a 2 bedroom cottage presumably rent free. He was given security paid by the taxpayers. He was also given a clothing allowance from Charles to pay for clothes for formal public occasions.

But he obviously had little access to money. He bought his casual clothes cheap from TK Maxx and talks about drying shirts on radiators.

When he told Charles he was going to marry Meghan Charles said he could not afford to pay for Meghan and Harry as he was already paying for William and Catherine. Charles suggested Meghan continued working to pay for Garry and Meghan. Meghan paid for furniture from Ikea and sofa.com to improve the furnishings in Nottingham Cottage.

Charles paid for Harry and Meghan's wedding. Although Meghan paid for her own wedding dress. The taxpayers paid for the security.

Remember Harry and Meghan were working Royals.

The taxpayers paid for the renovation of Frogmore Cottage. A cost that Harry and Meghna paid back when they left the Royal Family.

The Civil List used to give a defined amount to each working Royal. But that was changed and all the money went to the heir to dole out.

The Queen and Charles appear to be remarkably stingy towards their own child and grandchild.

"My family literally cut me off financially,” Harry said.

Well he did choose to leave and live a more private life. Does he believe that parents are there to fund their children for the rest of their lives.

I imagine how much you receive from the Queen, now Charles, is very much tied in with your status within the institution and therefore an indicator of how much you are valued by them. In Harry’s case the institution obviously got their sums wrong!

It’s a very toxic set up really having your role and wage determined by your father or sibling. None of us would like it! I think he’s done the right thing to get away and make his own way.

Plus all the trips to Africa

I can't believe anyone is suggesting he was short of dough!!!

I thought the taxpayers paid for those.

You conveniently forgot his multi million trust find, left to him by Diana.

I totally agree. The Civil List gave each member a set amount determined by their status in the hierarchy. But that was a fixed set amount.

@RedToothBrush Why would your dad get involved in your marriage and in what furniture a married couple have in their home? Sounds very strange and that the dad should keep his nose out.

Yeah why would you when you have your own inheritance which your dad isn't a trustee for?

Why wouldn't you work out how to use online banking on your phone or order online using special royal bank transfer with your personal banking assistant or other members of your household staff that you employ?

He didn't like Meghan's choice of cushions but was too gutless to tell her so she went and got them herself anyway

shard5 · 13/01/2023 12:48

Has op ever shopped at tkmaxx?
It's he classes it as cheap clothing he should look at Primark prices!

00100001 · 13/01/2023 12:49

and so what if he bought his clothes in sales?

Kate does the same thing - buys high street clothes ...

clyspa · 13/01/2023 12:50

I don't know who paid for his gap year in Africa and subsequent trips (including his hol with MM in the tent in Botswana) but isn't the point ultimately that if he is able to live the life he has he can't expect us to believe springing for a sofa or some pants from TK Maxx is a hardship!

Timelines don't matter to Harry.

He was cut off financially when he left the family business which was before or after he got Notts Cottage and was unable to buy furniture?

Consistency of the story? Meh what's that's matter. They wouldn't let me have a palace I'm so hard done by. Wah wah.

Harry added: "I was particularly fond of their once-a-year sale, when they'd be flush with items from Gap or J.Crew, items that had just gone out of season or were slightly damaged."

But the retailer has confirmed their stores do not hold annual sales.

Harry continued: "If you timed it right, got there on the first day of the sale, you could snag the same clothes that others were paying top prices for down the high street!

"With two hundred quid you could look like a fashion plate."

The 38-year-old continues to share his unusual method for shopping, which involved getting to the shop 15 minutes before closing time and hurrying up to the top floor with a basket in hand.

Seems tkmax doesn't agree but so what. Maybe it's his just his reality, visiting sales that don't exist.

I shop at TK Maxx. It is quality things sold cheaply. It is a cheap shop. No its not Primark which is much more cheap disposable clothes.

They also, apparently don't sell Gap at TK Maxx

babsanderson · 13/01/2023 12:55

@BigFatLiar I have already said. TK Maxx do have sales every year about the same time. TK Maxx do not call them annual sales. But they do happen every year about the same time.
People are sharing on twitter tweets from TK Maxx about their sales.

They do when Harry shops there.

Teatime55 · 13/01/2023 12:56

The issue is and always will be, Charles wasn’t showering them with money.
He clearly wasn’t sat home every night on his own, he had a social life, where did that money come from. How did he take all his girlfriends abroad.
Harry really can’t have had an issue with Frogmore. 2 future kings have lived there and he knows it.

Meghan clearly had this idea that royalty meant palaces and jewels and endless money. It’s not. We know how many aristocracy live and have done for centuries and even married Americans for their cash in the past.

If Harry didn’t have enough money he should have dipped into his massive inheritance.

LeavesOnTrees · 13/01/2023 12:59

If they were struggling, they could have applied for Universal Credit.

Also lots of tips on the money saving expert site for managing a tight budget.

There WAS help for them out there, but they seemed to have not chosen to access it.

Although, to be fair they probably wouldn't have been given a larger place if they'd put their names down on the council housing waiting list.

babsanderson · 13/01/2023 13:00

Actually Harry said their once a year sale, not even annual sale. TK Maxx do have a once a year sale.

He had large legacies from the queen mother and his mum. Both were in the millions. What did he do with it all?

His inheritance from the Queen Mother was supposedly greater than William's because William would ultimately have access to the Duchy of Cornwall funds and all that goes with being Prince of Wales and, later, KIng. The idea of Harry being broke is laughable.

Honeyroar · 13/01/2023 13:03

I wish I had as little access to money as Harry had/has.

Charles suggested Meghan continued working to pay for Garry and Meghan.

To be fair why should Charles pay for Garry?

Maybe Garry is Charles' long lost love child that featured on "The Windsors"?

babsanderson · 13/01/2023 13:04

@Teatime55 If I married the brother of the heir I would expect him to live in a large house that was well furnished. Andrew lives in an enormous palace for example.
