Harry had little access to money

Harry was given Nottingham Cottage a 2 bedroom cottage presumably rent free. He was given security paid by the taxpayers. He was also given a clothing allowance from Charles to pay for clothes for formal public occasions.

But he obviously had little access to money. He bought his casual clothes cheap from TK Maxx and talks about drying shirts on radiators.

When he told Charles he was going to marry Meghan Charles said he could not afford to pay for Meghan and Harry as he was already paying for William and Catherine. Charles suggested Meghan continued working to pay for Garry and Meghan. Meghan paid for furniture from Ikea and sofa.com to improve the furnishings in Nottingham Cottage.

Charles paid for Harry and Meghan's wedding. Although Meghan paid for her own wedding dress. The taxpayers paid for the security.

Remember Harry and Meghan were working Royals.

The taxpayers paid for the renovation of Frogmore Cottage. A cost that Harry and Meghna paid back when they left the Royal Family.

The Civil List used to give a defined amount to each working Royal. But that was changed and all the money went to the heir to dole out.

The Queen and Charles appear to be remarkably stingy towards their own child and grandchild.

@GloomyDarkness They say they bought a secondhand sofa.com sofa, but not that they bought it directly from sofa.com/
I bought a secondhand ikea sofa and say that. The fact that ikea do not sell secondhand sofas does not mean I am lying.

Well that's convinced me.

A multimillionaire living rent free who written a book full of many obvious inconsistences who admit to drug taking in his own book - must be believed when he recounts anecdotes about being poor but not when he talks about his drug talking.

We had to wait to afford sofas - in fact my kids go to school with many others who parents really are choosing between heating and eating - so it come across as crass to say the least.

ittakes2 · 13/01/2023 12:23

Are you kidding me? Harry's book includings details of their trip to Africa, going out to dinner, nights in a hotel - how do you think this was all paid for? Harry did these things before he met Meghan too.

@RedToothBrush He took cocaine. Lots of people on MN take cocaine.
Taking cocaine at some point in your life does not make you a drug addict.

That is like saying William got really drunk once so he must be an alcoholic who should have little access to money.

It is a ridiculous claim. And illustrates perfectly what Harry has talked about.

Lots of people on MN do cocaine. Is that what that thread I've seen that is running is really about? How normal Harry is to be snorting coke. When was this again? When he was at school still? Or when he was studying at Military College? Or when he was in the actual army? Or when he was a fully fledged adult after having served in the military for ten years?

Cos my recollection is that not only is cocaine illegal and it might land you a jail term, but if you are caught doing it in a position of authority or responsibility you lose your job. Even if it's a one off. Cos that's normal. And that's why it's only bellends that do coke. And only bellends that normalise coke and say it's just a one off and they won't ever do it again. Until the next opportunity.

He came from Windsor she had a thirst for drinking out of anything you acknowledge
He studied helicopters at Sandringham College
That's where the bin
Caught his eye

He told me that his granny was loaded
He said, in that's why he got away with blagging everyone else coke
He said its fine

And then in thirty seconds time he said
I wanna live like common people
I wanna do whatever common people do
Wanna sleep with common people
I wanna sleep with common people
Like you
Oh what else could I do
I said I'll, I'll see what I can do

SpookyBlackCat · 13/01/2023 12:26

Wow, Meghan really fell for that one!

I'm a British Prince and esteemed member of the Royal Family, however I cannot currently access my vast inheritance. If you could kindly send me 500,000 pounds, then I will personally reimburse you 2 million pounds in the next fiscal year. This is not a scam!

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/01/2023 12:26

Poor Harry, free house in central london and tens of million in the bank and his dad has the nerve to want him to buy his own stuff😂

I wish I had a free house in london and tens of millions of pounds.

NoSquirrels · 13/01/2023 12:27

Who cares if he bought his clothes from TK Maxx and dried them on a radiator? What’s the problem?

00100001 · 13/01/2023 12:27

"He bought his casual clothes cheap from TK Maxx"

oh yes, he swept through , did all his buying in 15 minutes, in the non-existent annual sales.

Tripofalifetime343 · 13/01/2023 12:28

Agree with PP that there does seem to
be a tight control over money within the institution.

And it does seem to me that if money was an issue for M and H, being one of the richest families in the country with immense private wealth, why couldn’t they quietly pay them off, give them a very generous settlement, and avoid all of this trouble?

What I want to know is when are we going to hear Garry's side?

Garry Windsor, the Untold Story.

UpendedPineapple · 13/01/2023 12:31

Harry is arguably more privileged than every other person in the UK bar his father and brother.

He's concentrating on the fact they get more, while being blissfully unaware that the only reason HE gets anything at all is the same ridiculous system that gives them more.

Crazy and utterly tone deaf.

I reckon MN users could rustle up some spare Billy bookcases for them.

I'm not sure Harry would have much use for a bookcase, let alone several of them.

TK Maxx do have sales. I think this is an example of how they get called liars. TL Maxx every year have sales about the same time of year. I have been to them. But TK Maxx do not call them annual sales. So TK Maxx has said we do not have annual sales.
Technically they are correct, but it is a pedantic point.
And on twitter people are sharing TK Maxx tweets about their sales. It makes them look stupid.

*Agree with PP that there does seem to

As it should be.

Having read his book, Harry is very clear that anything and everything needed for his work as a royal was freely paid for by his dad (wardrobe etc).

And if we'd wanted to use furniture kept in one of the family's many royal abodes, he only had to ask.

He chose not to spend his money on furniture. His brother opted otherwise. That's on him, not his family.

babsanderson · 13/01/2023 12:35

@Tripofalifetime343 I think Charles is tight. I agree it would have been very easy to pay them off with a large sum of money and an NDA. But he had to be tight and this was the inevitable result.

I dunno. He could have a whole wall of them with copies of nothing else but 'Spare' on them to help him with his positive affirmations and journey into his past. It would help him focus...

... whilst he disappeared up his own arse and fed his narcissism.

I'm sure Meghan would approve.

TiaraBoo · 13/01/2023 12:36

Imagine Charles writing his AIBU about giving DS2 a free house in an amazing location, clothes allowance for work and a job, he’s also inherited a lot money now he’s complaining that he has no money

babsanderson · 13/01/2023 12:37

@QueenSmartypants Taxpayers paid what he needed to be a working royal i.e. travel and security and we paid for the rent free 2 bedroom cottage, Charles paid for his working clothes.

How did he afford to play polo, the Vegas holiday and the back and forth from Canada (when they were dating (as just some examples)?

I think your answer is given by Harry himself in the Oprah interview - he lived off what he was given for his entire adult life up to leaving his rf role and when that stopped (evidenced to have been after he left in Q2 2020 with a lump sum he then got from Charles) he then started using his mums money:

My family literally cut me off financially,” Harry said. When Oprah pressed him on the point, he amended it to “the first half, the first quarter of 2020,” leaving open the question of whether any money had arrived after that.
In any case, he said, speaking of his life in the United States, “I’ve got what my mum left me, and without that, we would not have been able to do this.”

Harry had little access to money

Probably should be 'Harry had little access to his dad's money'.

clyspa · 13/01/2023 12:40

Plus all the trips to Africa

I can't believe anyone is suggesting he was short of dough!!!

Agree. Last time I was out with Charles at the local Wetherspoon's, I bought all the drinks.

This is a bonkers thread. People are writing as though they personally know Charles, Harry etc.

My girlfriend doesn't like my furniture but I was never bothered by it. I told her that Dad says I can't buy new furniture cos this is perfectly good because I didn't want to trail around IKEA for hours. Now she's threatening to go by herself and pay for it on her credit card instead? Now I'm starting to get embarrassed that she thinks there's something wrong with my taste and might leave me. AIBU to carry on with the lie or should I just come clean that I was a slob before I met her?

He may have some spare Spares.

Whitewolf2 · 13/01/2023 12:42

Oh please, more lies from Harry.
Bet he was just embarrassed and didn’t want Meghan to know he couldn’t be bothered to furnish his free cottage with his millions, too busy travelling and partying!

babsanderson · 13/01/2023 12:43

@RedToothBrush Why would your dad get involved in your marriage and in what furniture a married couple have in their home? Sounds very strange and that the dad should keep his nose out.
