Nott Cogg - 'frat house'

The father-of-two wrote: 'I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed. Nott Cott was no palace. Nott Cott was palace adjacent - that was the best you could say for it.'
As he watched Meghan walk up the garden path to his home, Prince Harry says he was 'relieved' that she 'gave no indication of disillusionment'.
However, that changed when the duchess stepped inside the cottage - where the ceilings are 'dolls' house low'.
He added: 'Then she said something about a frat house.'
Prince Harry says he had never noticed how 'shabby' the furniture in his home was before - with the then Suits actress appearing particularly unimpressed with his beanbag chair which matched his brown sofa.
After Meghan moved in, Prince Harry recalls how the couple purchased some Ikea lights and ordered a second-hand settee from sofa.com, which they'd bought with his future wife's credit card.

Is this petulant and ungrateful spun for a laugh?

It is not available on the open market because it is on the Royal Estate. If it was not on the Royal Estate it would be less desirable although still expensive.

And the £3m place in the same postcode, with the same square footage, linked upthread wasn't on a royal estate either. You are splitting hairs

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/01/2023 20:03

Andrew doesn't own it, it's leased.

They're not on the same estate, Royal Lodge is in Windsor

I've posted a link upthread to what a similar sized property in the same postcode would cost to buy.

There's a big difference between the agreed RENT to family members and what a property would be worth on the open market

The first one you posted is in W8 but very much the Earls Court end of the area - not comparable really

The second one is a better location, but it has no parking, no garden (just that side passage) and is very heavily overlooked.

I think Nott Cott would be worth vastly more - for context in the immediate area, 2-bed flats are on for the £6m, and if you go down towards Chelsea rather than over towards Earls Court the prices stay that high.

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 20:48

@StatisticallyChallenged ..so my post didn't mean that.

My post wasn't implying that not cot has no working loo.

Can you imagine 😂

I was drawing on the idea that the beautiful outside and the architecture doesn't impact that much if the inside doesn't match up??

Like approaching the most cosy thatched inn with smoke swirling from the chimney outside and cute benches with Holly hocks and flowers and you get inside with horrid plastic floors and bar Mats and fruit machine etc

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 20:49

I'm sure that old bf flat would have cost a very pretty penny to acutually rent or buy.

BunnyFantastic · 11/01/2023 20:51

@StatisticallyChallenged

Splitting heirs more like!

I talked about Meghan's Toronto home because a poster said Nottingham Cottage was a step up from her tiny Toronto flat. That was totally inaccurate.

You are making yourself look utterly ridiculous.

I think so too - these were the cheapest possible comparitors in the area. Cos if I put a more expensive one I'm sure someone would have immediately linked the cheaper ones...

I do get you, my old house was a very pretty little mews but when we moved in it was...well...bleurgh

I think it's the way that he has a very expensive property to live in for bugger all, and he's so tight he resents furnishing it properly then when the crap furniture is pointed out he's all woe is me, big bro has nice stuff. It's not like he couldn't have got an interior designer in- small quirky places like that can be fabulous and have major wow factor if done well

I wonder if its the gripe that dare not say its name

It had been completely done for the Cambridges. Which didn't bother Harry as a single man

@BellePeppa 😂 snorted at that

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 21:05

@BellePeppa That is a disgustingly misogynistic comment.

susan12345678 · 11/01/2023 21:05

Predictable that Cressida and Chelsea, who both grew up in luxury, had no issue with the house yet Meghan saw it as beneath her.

Thought snorting was Harry's speciality?

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 21:06

@susan12345678 Cressida and Chelsea did not live there.

@susan12345678 Cressida and Chelsea did not live there.

I expect they spend a fair bit of time there.

JustWhattheDoctorOrdered · 11/01/2023 21:12

Why are so many people on here commenting on a book they haven’t read?

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 21:12

Blossomtoes · 11/01/2023 21:09

I expect they spend a fair bit of time there.

You have zero knowledge of that. For all you know Cressida may have said I am not coming back to your bachelor pad!

Are they? How would you know?

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 21:06

@susan12345678 Cressida and Chelsea did not live there.

Cressida was his girlfriend 2012 - 2014, and Harry moved there in 2013, so she may not have been cohabiting but she would surely have been there frequently.

Chelsey probably would never have seen it - they dated 2004-10. So that was before the Cambridges moved in, let alone Harry

Why do you assume that?

Casting nasturtiums?

AdventFridgeOfShame · 11/01/2023 21:21

Low spec garden

If her house in Toronto was so much better, why did they not go and live there?

I always thought the concept of Nott Cott was that you could run around naked, have sex in the kitchen and a quiet cup of coffee in the garden in your PJs. Not the sort of activities that are easy to do in palaces.

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 21:22

@StatisticallyChallenged

I get that too and if you are talking about a mews house in London I'm extremely jealous.

I'm simply not getting the moan off him...its a description of what's he's living in and I must admit I'm surprised also.
I've seen outside photos and I guess I was expecting a more homely place.
It has the air the of a less well decorated air b n b or holiday let. Impersonal?

To be honest I don't think the pics we saw of the Obamas at Kate and will's place look that much better really.

It's a bit like these beautiful stately homes that are turned into colleges or school/ old folks homes with fire exits and no smoking signs.

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 21:25

@AdventFridgeOfShame

Have you been there?
I have and yes it looks smart in the photo, I wasn't fond of it at all.

I didn't find it beautiful or interesting. Infact the pics from the actual garden at nott cott I think are rather sweet.
For a so called palace I don't rate those gardens.

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 21:31

@susan12345678

Where is the quote that Megan actually saw it beneath her? .

Don't you think classic old money types are more used to stately homes and endless cottages on those estates done up like this?

I imagine and esp in London they were very used to Such modest bachelor types pads owned by the " family" and they would probably realise the actual cost of the square footage? Esp the duke of Westminster and family.

I don't think Megan thought it beneath her. I can imagine she realised the historical significance of the place. I can imagine she was still taken a back by how humble it was considering he's a prince.

I mean does anyone have photo's of say princess Micheal of Kent's children's homes?
Harry didn't have a mum to help him i can't imagine Freddie windsor flat being quite as sparse.
