Nott Cogg - 'frat house'

The father-of-two wrote: 'I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed. Nott Cott was no palace. Nott Cott was palace adjacent - that was the best you could say for it.'
As he watched Meghan walk up the garden path to his home, Prince Harry says he was 'relieved' that she 'gave no indication of disillusionment'.
However, that changed when the duchess stepped inside the cottage - where the ceilings are 'dolls' house low'.
He added: 'Then she said something about a frat house.'
Prince Harry says he had never noticed how 'shabby' the furniture in his home was before - with the then Suits actress appearing particularly unimpressed with his beanbag chair which matched his brown sofa.
After Meghan moved in, Prince Harry recalls how the couple purchased some Ikea lights and ordered a second-hand settee from sofa.com, which they'd bought with his future wife's credit card.

Is this petulant and ungrateful spun for a laugh?

Does the book mention anything about the other "cottage" they moved to.

Whinge whinge but conveniently forget to put some balance ah

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/01/2023 21:32

I don't understand why harry didn't buy the sofa on his credit card?! He can't have had No money?!

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 21:33

Maybe her buying the sofa's was a token gesture?

LadyVictoriaSponge · 11/01/2023 21:38

I would so love a look inside the real royal residences, the one that really appeals to me is Adelaide Cottage, the one I don’t like the look of is Bagshot Park, it’s obviously huge but looks like it was an old hospital or something, I find it looks a bit depressing.

@StatisticallyChallenged

I get that too and if you are talking about a mews house in London I'm extremely jealous.

I'm simply not getting the moan off him...its a description of what's he's living in and I must admit I'm surprised also.
I've seen outside photos and I guess I was expecting a more homely place.
It has the air the of a less well decorated air b n b or holiday let. Impersonal?

To be honest I don't think the pics we saw of the Obamas at Kate and will's place look that much better really.

It's a bit like these beautiful stately homes that are turned into colleges or school/ old folks homes with fire exits and no smoking signs.

Edinburgh rather than London, so somewhat cheaper!!!

This is from the DM, so possibly out of context
"The wallpaper, the ceiling trim, the walnut bookshelves filled with volumes of peaceful colors, priceless works of art. Magnificent. Like a museum.
'We congratulated them on the renovation without holding back the compliments while feeling embarrassed of our IKEA lamps and the second-hand sofa we'd recently bought on sale with Meg's credit card on sofa.com.'"

Think they also went on in Netflix about how small it was, how Oprah couldn;t believe it, etc

Perhaps if she spent a bit less on clothes after they got married, they might have been able to afford fancier furniture? Apparently she spent more on clothes than Kate (or any other royal) did in 2018 & 2019.

I can't feel a lot of sympathy for someone who whines about having to buy lots of stuff from TKMaxx. Even if half of it was returned, he's obviously spending a big chunk of money if he just goes round chucking anything that looks OK in his trolley. I go, I buy one item of clothing. I have to choose which will be most useful... I can only dream of chucking loads of items in.

It sounds like Meghan was unnecessarily rude about the house, & Harry hadn't bothered to make it particularly welcoming TBH. It doesn't reflect well on either of them.

What about the 100k she spent on her engagement dress, which was paid by Charles and that probably prompted him to tell Harry that he was not made of money? He could see the expense coming 😅

That and not being able to keep the freebies. Enough reason to leave!

I think Adelaide looks beautiful. Love the look of Gatscombe.

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/01/2023 21:42

Not a million miles off re Bagshot btw - it was designed as a private home but...

"following the Duke's death, Bagshot Park was requisitioned by the Army for the Auxiliary Territorial Service (later to become the WRAC) to use as their Staff College. This closed at the end of the war.
In 1946 George VI offered the house to the Royal Army Chaplains' Department to be used as a Church House and Chaplains' Depot. The Army Chaplains were in residence from 1947 but relocated to Andover, Hampshire, in April 1996, shortly before the Earl and Countess of Wessex took over the tenancy. The Army Chaplains famously placed a notice by the pond reading "Please do not walk on the water". The original sign was removed when the chaplains left, but a new one, made by J. M. J. Holland Chairmakers and given to the Earl of Wessex, has replaced it."

@AdventFridgeOfShame

Have you been there?
I have and yes it looks smart in the photo, I wasn't fond of it at all.

I didn't find it beautiful or interesting. Infact the pics from the actual garden at nott cott I think are rather sweet.
For a so called palace I don't rate those gardens.

I think you have quite high standards. If that was my back garden, I'd be pretty impressed, even more so considering I didn't have to lift a finger to keep them looking like that.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 11/01/2023 21:47

Very interesting @StatisticallyChallenged I wonder why Edward and Sophie wanted to live there, it’s obviously vast, but so unappealing, to me anyway.

Bloody numbering went wonky, you get the drift

The formatting on this site recently has become somewhat bonkers!

Yes, it says they loved it. Sounds like you've already decided for yourself what's in the book though!

Coronateachingagain · 11/01/2023 21:54

Oh good for them, since they still have it. £2m for a life lease on a house like that, not a bad deal. Of course not as posh as Windsor Castle like Meghan wanted 😅

The detail in this room is insane.

I do know that most people in here haven’t read the book because they are so many examples of people saying things that aren’t in it! Eg. That Meghan didn’t think Nott Cott was good enough. H just says that he was embarrassed about it because he hadn’t made an effort to update it. M’s frat house comment was to do with the things he had lying around. And, when they moved to Frogmore he said he was very grateful to the Queen for giving it to them and very happy with it when they moved in.

Cath667 · 11/01/2023 22:11

I know it's not the subject of this but I can't get past 'embarrassed of'. Shouldn't it be 'embarrassed about'? I can't believe the grammar would be wrong in the book so I'm doubting myself although I'm normally good at grammar.

It's very much implied in Netflix by her talking about how shocked people were and how small it was.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 11/01/2023 22:14

Goodness me! Obviously it’s beautiful but I just couldn’t imagine it being a family home, presume they must just live in a small part of it.

They are referring to her comments in TV show and interview.

I'd guess so. There's a few more pictures online which show similar interiors, it looks to be a very interesting property internally.

Now for royal gardens, can I have Highgrove please?

StartupRepair · 11/01/2023 22:23

Surely the frat house reaction is about Harry's lack of maturity, still living like a teenager in semi squalor. Seems like he never properly grew up. Emphasises to me how little they had in common - she was very knowing about 'lifestyle' and he was clueless.

torquewench · 11/01/2023 22:24

Maireas · 11/01/2023 17:41

Yes, it also came with security, housekeeping, cleaning and maintenance staff.
The royals are such bastards, eh?

Just imagine if he didn't have a cleaner. There'd probably have been beer cans, takeaway cartons and roaches from his spliffs lying around everywhere as well as his turd coloured beanbag 🤢

Velvetween · 11/01/2023 20:04

If I met a bloke who was living in one of his granny’s houses (for peppercorn rent in central London) and when he first took me home it became apparent he hadn’t properly furnished the place…I wouldn’t feel sorry for him. I’d think he was a spoilt, tight-arsed man child. And when he let me pay for the ikea tea lights and new sofa on my credit card when it was apparent he was sitting on a huge trust fund and inheritance, I’d have run like the clappers.

On that note, on another thread a poster said that one of the reasons that Cressida Bonas finally gave up on Harry was when he told her to pay for her own expensive air ticket to a wedding to which he wanted to take her as his 'plus 1'/girlfriend. Apparently she felt there was an air of tightness about him in the way he dealt with it.

I remember it stuck in my mind because I'd always assumed she left because she didn't like the limelight, but it seems there were, as with so much in life, a combination of reasons at play.
