Nott Cogg - 'frat house'

The father-of-two wrote: 'I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed. Nott Cott was no palace. Nott Cott was palace adjacent - that was the best you could say for it.'
As he watched Meghan walk up the garden path to his home, Prince Harry says he was 'relieved' that she 'gave no indication of disillusionment'.
However, that changed when the duchess stepped inside the cottage - where the ceilings are 'dolls' house low'.
He added: 'Then she said something about a frat house.'
Prince Harry says he had never noticed how 'shabby' the furniture in his home was before - with the then Suits actress appearing particularly unimpressed with his beanbag chair which matched his brown sofa.
After Meghan moved in, Prince Harry recalls how the couple purchased some Ikea lights and ordered a second-hand settee from sofa.com, which they'd bought with his future wife's credit card.

Is this petulant and ungrateful spun for a laugh?

I thought they were more in love than anyone has ever been in love before. Surely their love eclipsed the crappy brown sofa and fugly bean bag 🙄

I don't understand the whinging about Nottingham Cottage, which apparently is 1300 sq foot, hardly tiny.

It was only temporary, no one expected them to live there long term. William and Kate also lived there and it was the first place Prince George lived as a baby. So he can't claim inferior treatment with this one.

I don't know, my house is 2100

SpideyCraw · 11/01/2023 18:01

Meghan is obviously entitled to an opinion about Harry’s furniture and to want to have a day in the furnishings of their home, but the way she has expressed that to him is incredibly rude.

They we’re privileged to have that place to live and sound like ungrateful spoiled brats.

hellsbells99 · 11/01/2023 18:02

What a twat.

bakalava · 11/01/2023 18:04

Straight out of a certain diary, so much of this drivel. 🙄

They didn’t sofa.com only sells new sofas.

They’re such liars

1300 is bigger than the average UK house, which is apparently more like 1000. And there were only 2 of them

NottCott is a kind of royal starter home/bachelor pad. William and Kate lived in it both before and after their marriage, until their apartment in the main KP building was ready which wasn't until after Prince George was born. So at one point that wee frat house was housing two future kings.

H&M were also offered a big apartment in P - the Gloucesters were politely nudged out and hugely expensive renovations well under way when they decided they wanted to move to Windsor instead.

They were treated very similarly to W&K really in this regard.

I wonder how much nott cottage would be worth? Given a 1 bed flat in outer London goes for around 450k or 500k, I'm guessing a gorgeous cottage like that in its position would be a couple of million??

He doesn't realise how bloody lucky he is! Many people can't afford a property worth a quarter of the value of notts cottage

The two of them are loaded, they could have furnished it however they liked.

And did I imagine this, or wasn't it Will and Kate's cottage for a bit before H&M moved in? Didn't hear either of them complaining.

I'd be thinking 2+ given it's detached, has a garden and is in the grounds of a larger "stately home" which they have access to. Plus parking...

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 18:26

William and Kate had Amner Hall at the same time.

William and Kate had Amner Hall at the same time.

They got it as a wedding present. So at the point they were at the same stage as H&M, no they didn't

MudLady · 11/01/2023 18:27

Perhaps if she spent a bit less on clothes after they got married, they might have been able to afford fancier furniture? Apparently she spent more on clothes than Kate (or any other royal) did in 2018 & 2019.

I can't feel a lot of sympathy for someone who whines about having to buy lots of stuff from TKMaxx. Even if half of it was returned, he's obviously spending a big chunk of money if he just goes round chucking anything that looks OK in his trolley. I go, I buy one item of clothing. I have to choose which will be most useful... I can only dream of chucking loads of items in.

It sounds like Meghan was unnecessarily rude about the house, & Harry hadn't bothered to make it particularly welcoming TBH. It doesn't reflect well on either of them.

watcherintherye · 11/01/2023 18:31

If anyone hasn’t watched ‘The Windsors’, then I would recommend it. Uncanny!

eggandonion · 11/01/2023 18:33

TkMaxx often has nice homewares, perhaps he should have nipped out and bought some throws and vases before Meghan came over.
I like the Gloucesters and most of the Kents. I liked Princess Margaret too, she had a fabulous lifestyle as spare!

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 18:26

William and Kate had Amner Hall at the same time.

Whoa! Just hold on there a minute... Harry and Meghan were only given one home?
How they have been mistreated.

Minusthree · 11/01/2023 18:44

That really makes me dislike both of them on top of the really petty things he has been saying. There is a 2 bed detached mews in W11 and its £11300 per month with a £15k deposit. Two and half months rent equals the average UK wage.
But very stereotypical American being rude about UK small properties whilst not appreciating the incredible history or the cost of real estate in London.

And the interior furnishings are down to Harry's crap taste. no one else.

Georgeskitchen · 11/01/2023 18:46

I can't help wondering what the market rent would be on Nott Cott.
Eye-watering is my guess 😁

bakalava · 11/01/2023 18:46

Definitely an upgrade from her rented starter home in an unfashionable suburb of Toronto.

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/01/2023 18:49

Cheapest period property of that sort of size in W8 on rightmove is this - £2,050,000
www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/126796313#/?channel=RES_BUY

This, at £3m, is probably closer - 1300sqft, detached, small outdoor space, bigger communal garden

Minusthree · 11/01/2023 18:51

His comments certainly make it crystal clear why they could never have been half in and half out of the monarchy. They would have completely wound tax payers up and caused more strife than they are now.

I thought it was far fetched, but now I realise it was a fly on the wall documentary.

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 18:56

I'm not seeing it as a winge at all?
Wouldn't anyone who met a prince in the UK think they lived in luxury?

I just see it as an honest description of where he lives and it doesn't look fancy does it?
It looks plain.

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 18:58

Eg the photo of him in uniform show's a basic clothes rail and plastic box, and a plain but nice piece of " brown furniture" .
I'e no amazing antiques or how I would certainly expect it to be furnished.

If you don't think that a detached historic cottage with its own grounds next to KP is not luxury then fair play to you - you are on a different plane to me and most people in the UK

HaroldeVwilliam · 11/01/2023 19:03

No.

I didn't say that.

I don't appreciate that wrongly founded inference either.
