No surprises here. Days before the wedding the dresses didn’t fit. Couture gowns, made by Givenchy from measurements sent in. This tailor worked day and night but they had all six dresses to fix. It’s obvious they couldn’t get it all done. They really needed remade.

I think we can see why Kate was upset and why Charlottes dress and some of the other younger flower girls dresses looked awful.

On what grounds? The royals never sue anyway: never complain, remember? If they had an issue with the hem they would leak a story to the press about issues with the bridesmaid dresses… oh, wait.

But they did not. They leaked a story that Meghan made Kate cry over tights.
Nothing was said about the dresses.

Here you go @Orangefir

Looking at it, I don’t think the hemline of Ivy’s dress is polished either.

You can clearly see the difference in fitting for the two girls. The dress on the right has a lower, looser waist. The dress on the left is better fitting on the body and the skirt is fuller and more even.

queenofarles · 11/01/2023 13:30

Why sue Ajay? He offered to work non stop for four days, he deserves a medal for doing his best to save the beyond saving dresses,

I’m just wondering why no one from Givenchy was ever called to fix the dresses they designed ?
.

i have a theory as to why Meg feels so strongly about the whole saga , it’s not to do with dresses .
Kates comment that her top designer Sarah Burton , the one who always designs faultless and perfectly fitting clothes for Kate , thought the brides made dresses were so bad, Meghan perhaps took it too personally that her choices were not as refined as Kates.

I did think the Canadian girl had a better fit so perhaps Kate then thought that it was deliberate that Charlottes dress was ill fitting ,

both are petty and hysterical I think .

Absolutely it is better fitted, I wasn’t saying it wasn’t.

I was saying the hem wasn’t brilliant. Even though it’s better than Charlotte’s.

We also have to bear in mind that Ivy is older, so maybe she was less fidgety than the younger girls when her measurements had been taken and when her dress was fitted.

You clearly weren't there when my almost 3 year old GD was fitted for hers. I can't imagine what anyone hearing her would have thought.

Gosh, I agree with you. Kids do care and can be quite fractious, and difficult to deal with as a parent, especially if just having given birth. I'm assuming that people on here who suggest otherwise (e.g. @BitOutOfPractice doesn't have children or have forgotten what it's like. ;)

I realise that the text messages are Harry's recollections/reporting but when I read them, I thought that Meghan was brash and Kate a bit curt. Didn't Kate also have to wait for a response for 24 hours - even though the wedding was only 4 days away?

Why was the wedding so rushed btw? Was it because she was pregnant at this point (didn't they say she had suffered a miscarriage; was this maybe the reason?).

But I thought Meghan looked beautiful in that dress. Very simple and not body fitting which was lovely.

@AliceOlive No one has ever said the girls feet hurt.
My DD has worn shoes without socks or tights and they have been fine. If shoes are well made and well fitted they are fine without anything. The shoes will have been hand made to fit.

Well if the fit was as good as the dresses they probably hurt like hell. We all vary, you wouldn't have a problem, I would. When I got married my DH refused to believe I always have a period with new shoes when my feet bleed, he just said it isn't possible. Once he'd seen it a couple of times he changed his mind and accepted that surprise surprise his feet aren't mine.

I don't wear shoes anymore, it just isn't worth it. I wear sandals in summer and boots in winter and life is much better.

I thought those text messages were just recreated and not actually authentic...?

In the book they’re not text messages, it’s at a meeting in person.

AliceOlive · 11/01/2023 14:16

I took from the made up text messages that the conversation had happened multiple times already and that Meghan was not grasping just had badly the dresses were made. “And I told you…”

It’s very odd that they were dealing directly with one another on this at all. I would have expected measurements, fittings and second fittings to be handled via a coordinator or the atelier directly. Not the bride! Even in the best of situations the bride wouldn’t have time to deal with this.

There had to be a reason this was happening so last minute and for the lack of involvement by Givenchy.

I think because I have 4 children and half a dozen GC I am all to aware of the things kids get upset about and that something that will upset one child won't bother another one. It always amazes me that on here people can be so convinced that X is fine for them or their child that it means every single person in the world must be the same.

I thought Meghan and the children all looked lovely, having followed this thread I can now see all the faults in the children's dresses which is a shame. Maybe ignorance really is bliss.

stillavid · 11/01/2023 14:33

I am way more interested in the PP who was told by her half sister no little bridesmaids and yet had what sounds like a bridesmaid dress made for her DD and rocked up at the wedding.

Surely there was a mn AIBU about that?

Regards the bridesmaid dresses - honestly I love a bit of Royal gossip and fashion/tiaras but it is all getting a bit tiresome now.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 11/01/2023 14:38

Regarding the tights thing. I would have wanted them for warmth. It was a lovely day (luckily for them, I also was married in May and it rained all morning for mine) but it was still only an average of about 14° as is fairly normal in May. It would have been even colder inside the church as it always is.

GentlySobbing · 11/01/2023 14:39

I've just seen a screenshot of the page of Spare that describes the Bridesmaid Dress Incident.

The conversation that Harry goes through between Kate and Meg was actually spoken.

Kate sent a text saying there was a problem, then she and Meg arranged a time the next day to speak, and it's that conversation that Harry is recounting. Not verbatim texts.

So not really possible to judge the tone of either woman here.

Especially as Harry wasn’t present so his account was based on Meghan’s report?

queenofarles · 11/01/2023 14:43

was this part written by the ghost writer ? Or was it Meghan’s contribution? It seems so trivial , to be included , since it was covered on Oprah

Charlottes dress

I can just hear Esme from GBSB saying the hem is wrong.

ancientgran · 11/01/2023 11:18

I think Kate had every right to advocate for her child. I wouldn't have let my daughter be forced into shoes with no socks/tights as I knew it would hurt her. I'm not going to keep quiet about my child being hurt and I don't see why Kate should.

Agree.

Let’s not forget that Catherine will be very aware that having a daughter in the public eye for life means Charlotte will spend her entire life being shamed for fashion choices. She probably didn’t fancy starting it off as young as 3

But nobody has ever said the children's feet hurt. This is a narrative you are all making up.
The disagreement was about a style choice. And at a wedding the bride gets to make that decision.

Nonsense. This Bridezilla attitude - “It’s My Day so it’s my way” - is ridiculous. People being your bridesmaid is a favour they are doing for YOU. Not vice versa. It’s common courtesy to ensure they’re comfortable and on clothes that fit.

www.newsweek.com/meghan-markle-did-make-kate-cry-famous-flower-girl-argument-tom-bower-revenge-oprah-1726684

"Melissa Toubati, Meghan's assistant, and the dress-fitters employed by Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller, witnessed Meghan emphatically reject Kate's observation. Compromise was not a trait Meghan embraced."

Hardly a leak from the palace if Meghan's own staff and the dress-fitters are the ones talking.

Madcats · 11/01/2023 15:06

I'll just leave a radical thought here, but do you think these were NEW/2nd-attempt bridesmaids' dresses?

I can't understand why it would take soooo long to unpick and remake 1-6 bodices etc. and re-fit the skirts That's 2 (wo)man days per very plain dress.

The Royal Household must have accomplished needlewomen on speed dial, if not directly employed.

Odd

How ever many times I look at photos from the wedding, I truly can't see any of the bridesmaids, or Meghan, looking awful. Everyone looked gorgeous.

Same!!

Then again maybe you have to ‘know’ what to look for to spot a ‘fault’. This is why I don’t watch Strictly - I always think they’re really good dancers, all of them, and suddenly they’re getting low scores and judges are going into detail about why they cocked up and I am just thinking “They looked great” 🤣

You can’t see that? I get if you don’t think it’s that bad or a big deal, but you can see it?

I know what to look for, thank you. But you see, I saw the happiness, the cuteness. I wasn't there to pick holes in really relatively small details.

If you just saw everyone looking awful that says an awful lot more about you.
