No surprises here. Days before the wedding the dresses didn’t fit. Couture gowns, made by Givenchy from measurements sent in. This tailor worked day and night but they had all six dresses to fix. It’s obvious they couldn’t get it all done. They really needed remade.

I think we can see why Kate was upset and why Charlottes dress and some of the other younger flower girls dresses looked awful.

Who really would have known if the bloody dresses were off the peg with say a bespoke embellishment such as a silk cummerbund/belt thing? No one, unless they are in the trade and/or are very pass remarkable and critical.

The overall picture I got was a clutch of lovely girls in white dresses with flowery things on their heads and they looked delightful.

It really is becoming nit picking territory now.

No-one would have known or most not cared if the dresses had been off the peg - in fact it would be sounds of it been easier and a better results if they had.

Only reason anyone looking now at bridesmaid dresses is because Harry made a thing about it.

MIL and I actually though Meghan's wedding dress was off the peg - it's only when it was made clear it really wasn't that we though much about it. It was a minor detail on the day - she still looked lovely - but I've seen articles written later blaming fabric for the poor fit so I'm bemused at posters saying it fitted well and rest of us are all misremembering.

Meghan was clearly let down with the dresses. I'm surprised she appears not to have had more help with the wedding or that when she was clearly upset Harry didn't ensure she got some more- but I think Harry putting this anecdote in the book is a pattern of trying to throw shade at his family and trying to look as if he's keeping his hands clean at same time- this time it is 3 year old niece and 3 week post both SIL.

I think people who come out looking bad are Givenchy and Harry for being a petty jealous man.

I also don't agree white tights or sock or even the foot tights that with most shoes won't be seen would be usual in a UK wedding - but I'm also getting impression tights may have subtly different meaning in US or LA.

@Theheartmustpausetobreathe

Im not sure. The dress on the Canadian bffs daughter (Ivy) fitted perfectly. So I think it’s more the fit but it could be that this was part of the problem. They would have wanted to reflect Meghans fabrics choices, so perhaps chose something sturdier and maybe more difficult to work with

It would be like half the threads about the NHS spent arguing over years about whether Mrs Smith in 2014 wore appropriate clothes for her interview on TV about the NHs. It is bloody crazy.

Sugarfree23 · 11/01/2023 11:53

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 11:45

@AliceOlive This whole thing started because of a leak alleging wrongly that Meghan was so awful she even made Kate cry over tights and bridesmaids dresses. Harry and Meghan were responding to this. They did not start it.

And this is prime example of why HMQ's mantra Never complain, never explain is a good one.

If they hadn't said anything it would have blown over and been forgotten about. Instead it's been dragged back up again and now the Taylor has waded in.

For what it's worth the lady who altered my junior bridesmaids dress, decided it was easier to take it apart and shorten it from the waist than to shorten the hem.

Shelefttheweb · 11/01/2023 11:54

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 11:27

@AliceOlive No one has ever said the girls feet hurt.
My DD has worn shoes without socks or tights and they have been fine. If shoes are well made and well fitted they are fine without anything. The shoes will have been hand made to fit.

So were the dresses...

GloomyDarkness · 11/01/2023 11:55

And this is prime example of why HMQ's mantra Never complain, never explain is a good one.

Very true.

Serenster · 11/01/2023 11:57

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 11:51

@Serenster I know we will never know the whole story. But honestly it is a storm in a teacup.

We have in the Royal Family one man who has avoided going to court over allegedly raping a sex trafficked teenager. A King who has accepted donations of large amounts of cash in a suitcase.
And instead of being concerned about this people spend hours and hours, days, months and years arguing over whether some bridesmaids dresses fitted properly or not and over whether they should have worn white tights with the dresses or not. It is totally warped.

I agree. When the story first broke, the Palace response was “That never happened”.

Meghan couldn’t live with that however and since then it’s been covered in Finding Freedom, majored on in Oprah as one of their key grievances, mentioned in her subsequent magazine interviews and now covered at length in Spare. There’s only one party flogging this particular horse…

I believe the original source was given as someone working in the room where the alterations were occurring.

It does not make Kate look good and it is very unlikely that she was happy about headlines describing a petty issue between two women, and an emotional reaction in front of staff. The palace said none of it happened, why is that not enough? She was a victim in this, also. But there is zero camaraderie from H&M, they (and their fans) hate her so can’t see it.

Yet here you have H&M gossiping on Oprah and writing books about it. Happy to openly try and make Kate a villain in order to attempt to make themselves look like victims. Happy to directly cause her embarrassment and pain. She’s never done that to them. Do you think she doesn’t have stories of her own about their behavior?

Harry accused many of his friends including the Beckham’s of talking to the press about him. Perhaps a marijuana induced paranoia. We also know the press lies and fabricates stories. We only have Harry’s accusations against his own family, but no proof or even evidence. They made their staff angry by treating them poorly. Is it not possible that it was their own staff telling the press about these petty interactions?

It did fit well but the hem was still a mess, you can see in one of the photos posted here.

I totally disagree. It was talked about for years on forums like MN before they responded.

Can you? I noticed the waistband was sitting correctly etc but hadn’t noticed the hem. It was certainly the best of the lot

When I mentioned the form, I was not referring to a free range childhood in the sun. At all the London prep schools and public schools you wear tights or socks as a bare minimum (my mum favoured tights). That is what Charlotte would already have been used to. This also applied when attending internships, job interviews, weddings, funerals.
At Henley, you would be adhering to a different dress code altogether so a bare legged look could work with certain dresses but on all formal and semi-formal occasions, it was definitely tights for us (while most of the other girls wore socks). I remember trying socks on one occasion and absolutely hating it.
If you were on holiday abroad in the Caribbean, then you would be in different footwear anyway, so tights would not be suitable. Ditto skiing.

SingingWithSeals · 11/01/2023 12:17

Here you go @Orangefir

Looking at it, I don’t think the hemline of Ivy’s dress is polished either.

How ever many times I look at photos from the wedding, I truly can't see any of the bridesmaids, or Meghan, looking awful. Everyone looked gorgeous.

Theheartmustpausetobreathe · 11/01/2023 12:23

Thanks @Orangefir for thoughts on fabric .I agree Ivy Mulrooney does look as though the dress fits her better ,she's petite and it seems less relaxed and more fitted on her .
I'm going to put this link here as it has some footage of the bridesmaids in action .

@Lampzade

Perhaps your dresses weren’t bad enough to be remade because not everything can be altered with a nip and a tuck.

And whilst I’m sure you had a lovely wedding I’m pretty sure it wasn’t televised around the world for many millions of people to see.

Your outfits didn’t have to be perfect. These dresses did. Or as near to perfect as they could be after they’d been hashed by the original maker.

Perhaps Ajay is being tactful and the dresses were as good as remade.

If Ajay really did leave Charlotte's dress with an uneven hem, then the palace should have sued.

Agreed! I’m not a royalist but I watched the wedding and just remember it being sunny and happy and everyone looking wonderful and glowing. Much as I’m also enjoying the celebrity gossip angle of the Netflix show and Harry book, I do think it’s a shame that one of those great days has now been marred by all the petty bickering. Meghan looked wonderful; Charlotte looked adorable; Kate looked old-fashioned but great as per her style and not at all like a newly postpartum woman (I write this covered in baby sick, in pyjamas). Meghan’s evening look was iconic. And now it’s all a bit sad.

I suppose that is in keeping with royal tradition: the fabulosity of Diana’s voluminous 1980s wedding gown undercut by all the tragedy that followed; the formal elegance of Kate’s followed by the Wills affair rumours plus all this. Perhaps the royals get cursed when they marry?

Diverseopinions · 11/01/2023 12:40

Sounds like it.

There were 6 dresses.

4 tailors worked 3 days until 4am and 1 day until 10pm.

Harry said Meghan said that on at least one of those days, Ajay had started at 8am.

That is a LOT of man hours for alterations on six small dresses.

Orangefir · 11/01/2023 13:02

Suing the person who worked day and night to try and sort out six dresses that didn’t fit? ok? That’s normal

On what grounds? The royals never sue anyway: never complain, remember? If they had an issue with the hem they would leak a story to the press about issues with the bridesmaid dresses… oh, wait.

BradfordGirl · 11/01/2023 10:30

I also agree that no 3 year old cares about the exact fit of a dress.

My DD wouldn’t have given a shit but from about 2 my DS hated if clothes didn’t fit properly, they’d make him uncomfortable and he’d get very upset. Clothes shopping was a total nightmare.
