Tiara-gate unveiled (shameless pun)

The fact that meghan said, and Harry believed, she had spent “hours and hours” with dressmakers getting the original scalloped tiara to match the scallop veil edge shows, IMO, one of two things:

  1. meghan is a wild exaggerator and Harry is stupid. I had a high end dress custom made for my wedding. For this type of thing she would just need to hand over to the extremely experienced professionals. Meghan would have no input to this.
  2. meghan is an enormous control freak who stood over them for hours to make sure it was perfect

Harry trying to paint this unbelievably first world issue as arduous is yet another example of how ludicrously out of touch with reality she is. Poor Meghan, she went with another diamond tiara and hours of her time were wasted. I mean she had to take off time from her busy schedule of borrowing lipglosses and battling Willy’s finger to boss dressmakers around.

there is also an amusing quote somewhere about how Harry reassured Charles Meghan would not be a large cost addition for him as she “makes her own clothes”. Did she borrow her entire character from Snow White? Seal singing, dress making?

According to the excerpt there was also an expert there who knew the history of the 5 tiaras.

So unlikely an "unsuitable" one was put out imo.

Familycrapti · 07/01/2023 18:54

Whatever the rights or wrongs of this, the late Queen’s dresser served her loyally for over 30 years.
The poor woman has just lost a friend and employer, she should be treated with more respect, kindness and gratitude by the Queen’s grandson.

Stop it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Sophie’s tiaras are all a bit rubbish. Justice for Sophie!

Absolutely justice for Sophie, she's tried revamping her wedding one but the 2 she's got still show the frame too much. I'd love to see her in Queen Alexandra's kokoshnik as a reward for her patience but I can't see anyone wearing that great wall of diamonds for a while as so much associated with the late Queen. Possibly Kate when she is Queen.

Re: Tiaragate. If this is accurate, why after hours pondering matching the edging on her veil did she suddenly not want the (very meaningful) Spencer tiara? The one she wore was great, but it doesn't make sense, as said above she/Harry could just have said "thanks so much, honoured and touched etc but has agreed to the Spencer". I suppose little of all this makes sense, so no change there.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/01/2023 18:57

But her dress looked like it didn’t fit in places. It was stiff and odd around the neck. The tiara was perfect. Can’t even remember which British designer made her dress…

@Maireas

'Well, I'm impressed with Angela Kelly.
A man that could take out 25 Taliban reduced to getting the shivers by a single look from that woman. Kudos.'

I wonder if he fell & landed in her sewing basket, as a change from a dog bowl 😁

CoffeeBoy · 07/01/2023 18:58

Yes not only does she make her own clothes she also doesn’t eat a lot so won’t cost Charles a lot when it was thought he might end up paying for her upkeep. I mean is Harry not a tad embarrassed asking his dad to pay for his wife’s upkeep? I wonder how many of the clothes we’ve seen her in since her marriage are ones she’s made? 👀

gulliblestravels · 07/01/2023 18:58

@DobbyTheHouseElk

Maybe she made it herself 😉

diddl · 07/01/2023 18:59

If this is accurate, why after hours pondering matching the edging on her veil did she suddenly not want the (very meaningful) Spencer tiara?

Well often the simplest answer is the correct one...

Are we actually believing Harry’s version of events? I’m not.@ily0

Me either. She was the ghostwriter

I’ve done a quick search and quite a few sources say it was the Vladimir tiara and that maybe it was to do with status ie the other royals who had worn it were Queens (or at least senior royals)! So maybe Meghan too junior and entitled

I’m fairly sure that it Omid Scobie who said that Meghan wanted to wear the Vladimir tiara, on the basis that Princess Diana had also worn it, but she was told no because of concerns about its Russian heritage.

I think Omid was getting muddled here. The Vladimir tiara is Russian, yes - it came from a Romanov (Grand Duchess Vladimir, indeed - an aunt of the last Tsar) who escaped the revelation and had it later smuggled it out of Russia. Queen Mary bought it from her family, and left it to the Queen when she died. The Queen wore it throughout her whole reign, so there surely can be no concerns about the optics of wearing it?

Also, only Queen Mary and the late Queen have ever worn it. I think Omid/more likely Meghan saw this (very good) photoshop of Princess Diana which comes up online and assumed it was accurate - but it’s not.

I imagine the Megan ‘makes her own clothes’ is a mistranslation from the Spanish and meant she styled/sourced them herself (it must have been a shock not being allowed to borrow samples or accept gifts anymore.) I don’t reckon she was running them up on the singer.

But the context is that she makes her own clothes and therefore costs less money for Charles. That doesn’t really make much sense if it’s really that she doesn’t have a stylist - her clothing choices aren’t exactly cheap!!!

Marrying in a long white dress and a veil is crass when you are divorced and your ex-husband is still alive.

WTAF?!

Royals aside, MM aside, like, what now?

What are you expecting people to do whose first marriages break down for whatever reasons? I know tons of people whose have!

Do you make any exceptions at all? My cousin was married at a registry office aged 19, wearing, as far as I remember, something copper-ish in colour. Does she get to wear white and a veil the 2nd time around, or does one have to achieve perfection the first time around? If the latter, would it help if she murdered the ex husband? I can see how this might not be perfectly above board in legal or moral terms - but as per your rule set, would she get to marry in white if she did?

Seriously, though!

Maireas · 07/01/2023 18:28

Yes, I would have thought that was so recognisable, it would have been more significant than wearing an unknown one belonging to the late Queen Mary.

Maybe when she was head to tombstone with Diana, the guidance Diana gave her was to wear another one? I too am surprised given how close she is to the ghost of Diana that she chose a different tiara

I thought that the emerald one that was included in the five was the Vladimir Tiara and that she picked it, then was told after that it couldn’t be worn because of the history of it and a bit of dodgy lack of certainty as to how it appeared in the collection of the BRF anyway.

But who knows! So many details are left out. In the Big Picture, not getting the tiara you want is definitely a first world problem BUT if you did pick the Vladimir which is a corker, then were told you couldn’t have it then that’s a bit irritating.

I didn't think the provenance of the Vladimir was dodgy (the Queen wore it enough) but another emerald one, not the Greville obviously. I don't think she'd have been offered the Vladimir though.

Yes!!! I have always thought this!! I thought the fit of her wedding dress was awful.

Meghan is a really beautiful woman but so often her formal clothes don't seem to sit on her properly. They look stiff, wrinkly and gape in the wrong places. That green outfit she wore on their last engagement is another example, and even the white coat/dress thing she wore to the Queen's funeral was ill-fitting and unflattering.

I don't get it. She has access to the best designers and fitters in the world.

In direct contrast, when Meghan dresses casually she nearly always looks great.

Remember this is a very small world where he Harry and his nearest and dearest family all had to ask their granny for permission to propose, for permission to keep a beard if marrying in army uniform (it’s the navy that allows beards). Veils are symbolic. The colour white is etc etc.

The now King was not allowed to marry in a church as a divorcee. They take all this seriously. It doesn’t apply to you or Tony down the road.

Yes on the wedding day I also was confused by her dress. As I said in my OP I had one made. It fit me perfectly. It was expensive but a fraction of what Meghan’s cost so I can’t understand the weird fit and why it seemed like you could see a bra at times etc

she should have made it herself

@Legrandetraitor "head to tombstone" 😂
Anyway, this whole account is very odd.
It certainly was a swift change from making her own clothes to custom Dior and Givenchy.

Ultimately this book is hilarious and providing so much comic relief and food for gossip and discussion that it’s really brightened up an otherwise quite grey and dull month. Hurrah

Meghan's dress was an exact copy of the one designed and worn by Angela of Liechtenstein. Except hers fit.
