Tiara-gate unveiled (shameless pun)

The fact that meghan said, and Harry believed, she had spent “hours and hours” with dressmakers getting the original scalloped tiara to match the scallop veil edge shows, IMO, one of two things:

  1. meghan is a wild exaggerator and Harry is stupid. I had a high end dress custom made for my wedding. For this type of thing she would just need to hand over to the extremely experienced professionals. Meghan would have no input to this.
  2. meghan is an enormous control freak who stood over them for hours to make sure it was perfect

Harry trying to paint this unbelievably first world issue as arduous is yet another example of how ludicrously out of touch with reality she is. Poor Meghan, she went with another diamond tiara and hours of her time were wasted. I mean she had to take off time from her busy schedule of borrowing lipglosses and battling Willy’s finger to boss dressmakers around.

there is also an amusing quote somewhere about how Harry reassured Charles Meghan would not be a large cost addition for him as she “makes her own clothes”. Did she borrow her entire character from Snow White? Seal singing, dress making?

You missed off the and doesn't eat a lot.

I’ve now read twice that a woman’s disrespect is a “look” something without witnesses is nothing more than a perceived feeling.

Not just a look, a look that made him shiver.

LittleBearPad · 07/01/2023 18:25

But then why change her mind.

Wearing the Tiara that was synonymous with Diana would have been a huge deal.

Maireas · 07/01/2023 17:49

Well, I'm impressed with Angela Kelly.
A man that could take out 25 Taliban reduced to getting the shivers by a single look from that woman. Kudos.

That was my exact thought too Grin

Maireas · 07/01/2023 18:26

You're right, @Serenster . The Queen owned about 17. Your tiara facts are of course spot on!
The whole story though is very odd, I agree.

Yes, I would have thought that was so recognisable, it would have been more significant than wearing an unknown one belonging to the late Queen Mary.

LittleBearPad · 07/01/2023 18:28

Serenster · 07/01/2023 18:23

The Queen had about 17 that we knew of. Camilla was given three available to get to use as Duchess of Cornwall that came from the Queen’s Mother’s stash (plus she had a one from her own family she could use). Anne has four available to her, Kate currently has three, Sophie also three. Fergie had one. There are very likely more in the vaults that we don’t know of - some of Princess Margaret’s collection may have come back, for example. Eugenie’s wedding tiara had never been seen in public before she wore it and Queen Mary, the Queen’s grandmother, had an absolutely massive collection (she lived in a time where she wore a tiara and a formal gown to dinner every night, even apparently when it just her and her husband dining!).

Anyway, I found this story a bit odd. The story says that Harry’s aunts, Earl Spencer’s sisters offered him the use of the Spencer tiara. But it’s their brother, Earl Spencer, who actually owns it. And it’s a Spencer tiara, worn by women in the Spencer family. Hence Diana Spencer wore it for her wedding - some thing the Queen was perfectly happy with.

So it seems odd that it would have been offered to Meghan (not a Spencer) when it’s not like she’d be lacking in options. And even if she had, why would the Queen have begged her to wear one of her own ones? And if she had gone to all the trouble to have her veil match the tiara, why would she have changed her mind?

Sophie’s tiaras are all a bit rubbish. Justice for Sophie!

Maireas · 07/01/2023 18:30

Sophie's wedding tiara was upgraded by adding two diamond bands, which definitely improve it!
She has a nice aquamarine one, and another which is part of a parure.

DuchessOfPort · 07/01/2023 18:31

I thought that the emerald one that was included in the five was the Vladimir Tiara and that she picked it, then was told after that it couldn’t be worn because of the history of it and a bit of dodgy lack of certainty as to how it appeared in the collection of the BRF anyway.

But who knows! So many details are left out. In the Big Picture, not getting the tiara you want is definitely a first world problem BUT if you did pick the Vladimir which is a corker, then were told you couldn’t have it then that’s a bit irritating.

Well colour me cynical but maybe "recollections vary" about which tiaras were offered.

Candleabra · 07/01/2023 18:32

Very odd story. It’s like there’s a gap of information and the punchline is missing.

I could (sort of) understand the whinge if it was: Meghan had lovingly made her veil to match the spencer tiara as a tribute to Harry’s late mother, then the royal family stepped in and made her wear one from the royal collection….

(Even then, a whinge about choosing priceless jewels to is a bit hard to swallow)
I also can’t understand anyone who looked as lovely as Meghan did on her wedding day having a beef about what she wore. The tiara was perfect.

Maireas · 07/01/2023 18:35

No, had Meghan been offered the Vladimir she could have worn it. The Queen wore it often! That rumour was proven to be false.
The emerald tiara worn by Eugenie was the Greville Emerald, her choice.

Florissant · 07/01/2023 16:18

Marrying in a long white dress and a veil is crass when you are divorced and your ex-husband is still alive.

It isn't! You can wear what you like when you're getting married.

Oh I think I can match your cynicism about the whole story…

Gunpowder · 07/01/2023 18:40

Poor Sophie Wessex has more than a tiara to worry about. Does anyone remember the necklace that Edward very sweetly made for her for her wedding? She always looks beautiful but it was the equivalent of a pasta necklace made with pearls.

Forthelast · 07/01/2023 18:41

I have to say, there is something rather good about thinking someone was able to give this entitled, self absorbed character a 'look' that stopped him in his tracks for once.

Oh, lord. Poor Sophie. She gamely wore it then and on another couple of occasions.
It's hard to imagine how pearls could be made to look ugly....

Poonicorn · 07/01/2023 18:46

Ultimately he is complaining about which diamond tiara his wife was lent for her wedding. Does he really think that will attract any sympathy at all?!

DuchessOfPort · 07/01/2023 18:48

Ahhhh - thank you Maireas - so might there be another emerald tiara that isn’t in the public eye ever, that got put out and shouldn’t have been? So we don’t know what the one she originally wanted looked like?

On the day I must say I thought the one she chose was perfect for her. Very chic and not too curly wurly which is what I assume she didn’t like about the Spencer one.

The Vladimir is one of the true “big guns” of the British Royal family tiaras in terms of both its size and impact and its historical provenance. It has only been worn by Queens in the past, and it was worn often by the late Queen. It’s genuinely highly unlikely it would ever have been one of the options offered to Meghan.

Justnot · 07/01/2023 18:48

I’ve done a quick search and quite a few sources say it was the Vladimir tiara and that maybe it was to do with status ie the other royals who had worn it were Queens (or at least senior royals)! So maybe Meghan too junior and entitled

This link may help with the ‘rules’ around tiaras! Was an interesting read.

And this one is just because it always makes me smile:
