The royal family

Any Americans on Here? What is the consensus in USA on Harry and Meghan?

In the UK the media seems mainly 'against' and aghast about H and M (as are all my friends and family - even the anti royal ones). What is the mood in America - is the media/public starting to turn against them, or do they still have strong support?

We do not have any sort of consensus in the US. On any subject.
put 3 Americans in a room, get 5 opinions.

While not representative, I watched Harry on the Stephen Colbert show with a live audience (I know from experience, it's a skewed demographic (wealthy New Yorkers/New Jersey types), but they won't have queued up to get tickets to see Harry - once you have tickets, it's pot luck which guests you see).

The crowd loved him. And I don't think Harry could go in front of a live audience in the UK.

Sister married to american in the US armed forces. Furious about H talking about numbers of taliban he's killed. Big no no. General consensus amongst their american friends is that H is a total (frozen) dick and and she's a social climber.

I’m also a dual citizen, raised in England, lived in the US for ~6 years now. I live in the Northeast.

Americans really don’t care about them or their story. Sure, you’ll have randoms here and there that have developed an interest in them, but as a whole their eyes glaze over when the news trots out the latest piece that Harry and Meghan have pushed them to air. They are not a topic of interest or conversation.

To demonstrate just how much that is the case, I’ll admit that my mom’s side of the family lives in Montecito within walking distance of Harry and Meghan. I just spent two weeks there over the holidays and did not hear them mentioned once anywhere, in spite of them living in the area.

When I was nine or so I once mentioned the royal family to my American aunt. She smiled at me and kindly said “Darling this is America, no one cares about that here.” 😂Holds true today!

Once you have kicked a royal family out no one wants them back.

Tina Brown another royal author saying that they are more loved than the royals in America and that they have won.

Saw Tina Brown live in conversation last year. Wonderful erudite and witty woman. She knows her royal stuff inside out and is a big royalist so if she says so believe her. Harry's reception on the Late Show was ecstatic and I've been watching Stephen for years and all the rest and never seen anything like it before

How is Harry an underdog? He was born on 3rd base and thinks he hit a triple.

Showing my age here but I loved the Abbott and Costello sketch. Who's on 1st base...

Coxspurplepippin · 12/01/2023 07:41

What Tina Brown said is that people (in the US) think their (Harry and Meghan's) victim narrative is correct. Not a ringing endorsement. She said the RF have been damaged by the NF soap documentary, Harry's book. That is, damaged by the distinctly one sided, half baked 'truth' put out by Harry and Meghan.

She also says Harry's book has enough self sabotage for their popularity in the US to be dented.

When I saw Tina Brown in conversation at the Kite Festival she let slip that there are secrets that if revealed would ruin the royals. God only knows what they would be. www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/others2022/2022/kitereview.shtml

Coxspurplepippin · 12/01/2023 07:53

Did she have a book to sell? Funny 'bout that. You seem to be a Tina Brown superfan all of a sudden Grin it's amazing how anyone who says anything against the RF is immediately, in your view, intelligent, erudite, etc etc.

She didn't say bad things about the RF and merely hinted in conversation at that and wouldn't be drawn by the interviewer who if I recall was the ex head of BBC News. She spent more time talking about the loss of her husband and what he meant to her rather than majoring on that. She did do book signings though as did the rest at the festival and Waterstones had a big tent.

That's ok then, drop a few completely unsubstantiated hints, a bit of salacious rumourmongering, move on, no being held to account. That's the sign of a good journalist now?

It's telling that the blog piece you linked to upthread contains a couple of sentences regarding Tina Brown's appearance at Kite festival. The writer also doesn't seem to share your enthusiasm for her talent.

'Sandwiched between these two great speakers was Tina Brown Grin talking about the Royals. While not a subject of great interest to me, she did so with sufficient gossipy candour that even hard boiled republicans could find interest in what she said, not least the revelation that if “secrets got out” it would ruin the Royals'

So no mention of Ms Brown's husband at all. Just a bit of the salacious, unfounded gossip.

Blip · 12/01/2023 08:59

Harry seemed very well received on the Late Show.

He claimed it was fine to talk about his kill count as he had not said it boastfully and that any increased security risk would be solely the fault of British media for quoting him out of context.

That reviewer is a very close friend of mine hence the ticket , he cherry picked the 'best bit' !

Coxspurplepippin · 12/01/2023 09:32

So the 'best bit ' of Tina Brown's appearance at the festival was a couple of minutes unsubstantiated gossip. Yet you admire her. Can totes see why - she's obviously a giant in the literary sphere. Have you told your 'very close friend ' what a Tina Brown fan you are. I'm sure they'd be impressed.

Branleuse · 12/01/2023 09:35

Most people i know either do not give a shit, or are marginally pro megz/hal

He rolls his eyes at my mild obsession with trivial gossip, he is a writer and appreciates more meatier fare. My point was it was the best bit of her appearance for me at least and had never seen her before. She is quite raconteur and isn't shy of criticizing him as she makes clear a couple of days ago. She is of the more in sorrow than in anger camp.
