The royal family

Any Americans on Here? What is the consensus in USA on Harry and Meghan?

In the UK the media seems mainly 'against' and aghast about H and M (as are all my friends and family - even the anti royal ones). What is the mood in America - is the media/public starting to turn against them, or do they still have strong support?

I have family on both coasts. They know very little about them. They care to know very little about them. Everyone can recognize (yet another 🙄 ) hypocritical, new ager convert from a mile off but still, nobody cares.

Jimmy Kimmel spoof of the fight

Oh Lord. Yeah, they are going to be facing a great deal of derision in US. Once the late night shows start up it’s all downhill.

More Jimmy Kimmel. Spoofed wedding dialogue about the frozen todger.

How do you know they are feigning? Most people I know aren’t at all interested and barely know who they are. I’m vaguely interested.

Same here. I talk about it on mn because there are so many threads on it. In real life I've only heard one person mention it and they are huge royalists. No one else I know cares, it's just gossiping about other peoples lives.

Must say, I will read the book though because I am nosey!

crosstalk · 07/01/2023 12:07

@Menstrualcycledisplayteam I came to that conclusion - that the red tops had paid money to the Spanish bookshops - but it turns out it was the Guardian, generally considered left of centre and not keen on the RF. I could be wrong again ....

As for tax funded this and that, who pays for Presidents? eg the upkeep of the White House, Camp David and AirForce One? and the security details? I'm not sure what's done for Macron et al.

There's also the fact that elections also cost the tax payer - and with any President anywhere you have another level above parish council/county council/MPs - indeed since we don't yet have elections to the House of Lords (boo hiss) we don't yet even have the level of Senate election expenditure.

To say nothing of relieving another level of pork barrel politics.

Josette77 · 07/01/2023 12:12

Canadian and everyone I know finds them embarrassing. They have become a joke on late night TV.

MajorCarolDanvers · 07/01/2023 12:25

Doesn't mean anybody in real life was actually speaking about it

Maybe not in your circles but its unrealistic to speak in behalf of the entire nation.

@AliceOlive sarcasm Alice

Thank Goodness. One never knows on here. Particularly when reading comments about the US.

Kim K met with Trump about getting a few people who had been sentenced to life in prison released. So I thought maybe that caused some confusion.

SingingWithSeals · 07/01/2023 12:36

I'm British and was on holiday in the US for the past few weeks. I was having a chat with a shop assistant (African American, for context) and she asked me what I thought of Meghan and Harry. I diplomatically said I wished they'd stop talking and was rather surprised that she wholeheartedly agreed. She said she couldn't stand them, thought she was a social climber, and that they were both self-obsessed whiners.

This was pre-leak. And obviously just one anecdote.

Not American, just shocked all your friends and family talk about it! I never hear anybody mention them in real life and I'm also in the UK! I see it on news and on here obviously but never ever in real life. I thought it was a celeb gossip type thing, everybody hearing things but not really a topic in real life

She's probably the one who brings it up with everybody. I can't be think of a single person I've spoken about them to in real life

i wonder about opinion in europe

a laughing stock no doubt as was liz truss and boris

Britain is a laughingstock, full stop

MarshaBradyo · 07/01/2023 12:45

I’m sure other countries have their own issues to think about

People are weirdly obsessed with everyone focusing on Britain.

Started in the pandemic and they can’t let go of it.

Asked my American family (in Boston, California and New York) and they said it's not much of a topic of conversation other than general gossipy scandal, for older ones it reminds them of Fergie toe-sucking/Prince Charles tampon transcript and for younger ones/in general it just tends to be talked about as another example of the declining state of the UK post-Brexit

This is what I would expect. The whole saga is just yet another nail in the coffin of Britain on the world stage.

Swissmountains · 07/01/2023 12:48

The telegraph have printed the reaction around the world today. It makes for interesting reading. US papers on the whole think he is 'washing his dirty laundry in public' and seem to think it is 'gauche' (not a word we use often)
NY times have held off saying anything at all.

It does not appear to have set the US on fire, or even a small flicker.
It will be yesterday's news here soon enough too. He needs professional help and I hope someone can reach him.

creamcoffee · 07/01/2023 12:50

it doesnt really affect the world though, doesnt affect america
it affects the uk and the monarchy

mondaytosunday · 07/01/2023 12:50

But it's interesting how the reports here of W and Ks recent US trip was met with 'ho hum' reception, when my family in Boston said there were crowds wherever they went and people were excited to see them.
I think it's true about anything - some people will be keen on all their news, others it will barely register. I know a few anglofiles who are curious, but most view it as a soap opera they are only mildly diverted by.
There was definitely more interest in the Queens passing.

Swissmountains · 07/01/2023 12:50

Their Netflix docuseries bombed in the US in terms of viewing.

I hope they don't come back! I kind of want them to be successful there, as the last thing we need is for them to bring back all their toxicity.

creamcoffee · 07/01/2023 12:51

The French media were not much more supportive. "The first leaks of Prince Harry's explosive memoirs annoy more than they soften across the Channel," said French radio station RTL.
It said the British people it had questioned "regret this washing of dirty laundry in public" with one telling the station: "I would just like these two brothers to patch things up. The family matters most, surely?"

BlueKaftan · 07/01/2023 12:52

@AliceOlive yes, the first six years were ones of loneliness and isolation, and many times I was “othered” as soon as I opened my mouth and spoke. Since 2016 things have changed a great deal for the better. I have friends, largely enjoy the culture, and hopefully have a long-term job. I love England now.

You're so 'shocked'.,,,, that you're talking about it?, 🤣 actually getting quite worked up 😆

2FelisCatus · 07/01/2023 13:09

Most of our American friends and family don't really know who they are. The ones that do had some sympathy for them after Oprah but now think they are completely blind to their own privilege. The Afghanistan excerpt has gone down particularly badly as he's clearly just put everyone near him in danger. Divulging the part about King Charles' teddy bear was also seen as very mean. I think they will really struggle to get much interest from mental health charities after that one.

Agreed. So sad and ironically BREXIT was voted by a lot of people, who thought this would regain power / wealth to their region.

I have a family member in Italy who watched absolutely all of the coverage of the Queen’s passing. I’ll have to ask if she follows the H&M activities.

Blueblell · 07/01/2023 13:21

I would think this book has blown Megan’s chance to get into politics or serious philanthropic work. Bragging about killing and taking drugs isn’t really a good look.

Nah, US politics are such a shitshow. It feels like no scandal can stop anyone here, at this point. It’s all about getting the $ and support of one party or another behind you. If they think MM can win and will do as told, she’ll be funded and promoted.

Fundraising is a different thing. That might be a little more difficult.
