The royal family

Any Americans on Here? What is the consensus in USA on Harry and Meghan?

In the UK the media seems mainly 'against' and aghast about H and M (as are all my friends and family - even the anti royal ones). What is the mood in America - is the media/public starting to turn against them, or do they still have strong support?

I’m American. I don’t know anyone that loves a privileged whiner or views someone raised in extreme wealth as an underdog. I’m mean, Meghan the northwestern educated multi-millionaire actress had to use her credit card to buy IKEA furniture for her boyfriend the Prince’s cottage. That’s a redemption story? We must be living on different planets.

Exactly….I mean it’s hardly Rocky!!

TapertandEdkins · 08/01/2023 01:33

Brit living in the Midwest of America here.
I work in an industry that involves talking to a lot of people everyday. My accent is often commented on. During Brexit I was always asked for my opinion. After the queen’s death people wanted to talk about how I felt. The H&M stuff….not once has it been mentioned.

AliceOlive · 08/01/2023 01:33

I wonder how Harry would feel about being compared to Paris Hilton and Robert Downey Jr. 🤣

onlylarkin · 08/01/2023 01:45

@AliceOlive I wasn't talking about Meghan was I? She is not an underdog.

I also said Harry is not an underdog. But he will be seen as going through much adversity to get out "on top".

onlylarkin · 08/01/2023 01:49

Well, Paris' story did change once the world learned about her fucked up upbringing and look how well she is doing right now.

How is Harry an underdog? He was born on 3rd base and thinks he hit a triple.

I love your baseball metaphor.

I’m also a dual citizen, raised in England, lived in the US for ~6 years now. I live in the Northeast.

Americans really don’t care about them or their story. Sure, you’ll have randoms here and there that have developed an interest in them, but as a whole their eyes glaze over when the news trots out the latest piece that Harry and Meghan have pushed them to air. They are not a topic of interest or conversation.

To demonstrate just how much that is the case, I’ll admit that my mom’s side of the family lives in Montecito within walking distance of Harry and Meghan. I just spent two weeks there over the holidays and did not hear them mentioned once anywhere, in spite of them living in the area.

When I was nine or so I once mentioned the royal family to my American aunt. She smiled at me and kindly said “Darling this is America, no one cares about that here.” 😂Holds true today!

I'm not disinterested, I'm just fascinated by people who form a view based on events that are being reported second hand (not using direct quotes) by a newspaper that is currently being sued by H & M. I'd treat that as a really untrustworthy source. I'll wait until I've read it myself to form my opinion.

he literally wrote a book? (ok a ghost writer) but his own words. I don't know how purer a source gets than a person's own diatribe.

In my experience, Americans don’t like sharing your family’s business with other people. They really, really dislike whining and admire problem-solving. You’re expected to overcome adversity and make a success of your life, IYSWIM

You must know some very WASPy Americans!

Many Americans aren't like that. They wear their heart on their sleeves, will tell their life story to the stranger sitting next to them. Talking about tough times is not 'whining', there's no shame going to therapy. You don't have to be a success, you just try to be a good person and happy.

You really can't generalise about Americans like that.

I don’t know whether I’ve just met a certain type in the years I’ve lived here, but I’ve lived in several states and I’m not married to a WASP. Family’s really important to pretty much everyone I know and most people have therapy at some point.

Talking about tough times is fine, but the attitude is that you have to get through them and move on, because unlike the UK, there’s very few social safety nets to help you ( not that the UK has many of those either nowadays). You can’t really fall apart here, because you literally will end up with nothing.

Harry needs to show that he can also move on and make a success of his life.

I was not trying to reference Meghan, only her credit card.

Harry is not giving off the impression that he views his story as having any parallels with people who sought redemption. He has not indicated he’s believes he’s done anything requiring it.

I have no judgement for Paris Hilton and never did. She did not harm or betray anyone publicly. At worst, she seemed a little silly at times. I think it was obvious that was an act for the purpose of tv. She seemed like a hard worker, actually.

HamBone · 08/01/2023 03:20

@dreamingbohemian I think you do have to be moderately successful just to pay for the therapy, we paid $195/hour; even therapists who take insurance are about $115/hour. Nothing’s free here.

My copay for therapy is $30 a session. And there are places that charge on a sliding scale based on your income.

Pallisers · 08/01/2023 03:27

I live in the US - east coast.

No-one I know talks about it - not even as a conversation filler. It appears in the newspapers as a very low on the totem piece and the vibe generally is "gosh aren't those windsors weird and Harry is very damaged"

The book, the interviews - all of it - really isn't the big deal it clearly is in the UK (and on MN) not surprising really.

HamBone · 08/01/2023 03:30

@steff13 That’s great. Where we live, very few therapists take insurance at all, you usually pay the full whack.

I’m sure it depends on your plan as well-lower premiums and no copays-=higher deductible. That’s how we paid $115/hr even with a therapist who took insurance.

NumberTheory · 08/01/2023 03:31

I’m on the West Coast and socialise mainly with West Coast liberal elites. My friends know I don’t give a shit about the royal family but they occasionally slip and ask me about the Queen/Charles/ Diana. The only bit on Meghan most of them have been interested in is whether or not I think the press are anti- her because she’s black. One friend (who is a total sleb follower and probably more representative of most of America than the rest of my circle) asks me other stuff from time to time, and seems to take the view Meghan is being badly treated because she’s American and Black. But she’s hasn’t said anything for months. Don’t know if that’s because she’s beginning to pull her support or because she’s just not read anything lately.

Geebee12 · 07/01/2023 10:08

Aren't they just? I find it interesting that they are clearly so disinterested in the RF/Harry that they click on a link clearly about Harry and Meghan!!!

I clicked because it was on trending and nothing about H&M showed and while I don’t give a shit about them, I understand they have an impact and I don’t put down people who are interested. But go ahead and be a total fucking dick to people who answered your question in good faith why don’t you…

chocolateflapjacks · 07/01/2023 10:02

All the people that feign disinterest are so tiresome.

It doesn't make you superior at all, by the way.

In Canada we've got other stuff going on, as does the USA (Speaker votes), and it's just lower-level celeb stuff really, so we're not feigning anything. It is big news, however, to my English friends, who keep messaging me about their TOTAL OUTRAGE!

HamBone · 08/01/2023 03:47

We like self help, we like overcoming adversity, we like therapy. H & M may be down now, but it wont be forever.

@onlylarkin That was my point though-i feel that he has yet to overcome and find redemption. I would like him to, but I’m not sure if it’ll happen.

QueenSmartypants · 08/01/2023 03:48

Around the time of the Oprah interview, my stateside friend brought them up in conversation and asked if they were as big here as they were there lol At the time, she said they were everywhere (meaning in the media) and as a talked about as the Kardashians.

The US is such a huge country, I imagine there's huge variability between communities and states as to how much attention they get from the public.

frostnippedtodger · 08/01/2023 04:11

I'm in Australia. It's been in the newspapers since the Spanish version leaked, but only because the writing is so terrible and the stories are 'unexpected'. And not front page as far as I'm aware, a few pages in and not big articles. I mentioned something to DH and he had no idea that there was a book (or an Oprah interview for that matter). He and the boys have been using 'mounted' quite a bit in general conversation though, after I told them that story! None of my friends are talking about it, can imagine any of them would buy it.

AnotherBritInTheUSA · 08/01/2023 04:25

I’m in Connecticut. The only people who have mentioned them to me are two women in my book group in our group text on Thursday. One said she’s no expert but she didn’t think they need to wait by the mailbox for an invitation to the Coronation and other other commented that the New York Post reported that #ShutUpHarry was trending on Twitter. Conversation then turned to the health update of a football player who went into cardiac arrest during a game on Monday night and Jeremy Renner having been run over by his snow plow.
Harry is on tv here Sunday evening, interviewed by Anderson Cooper.

Aussie here too. My experience has been pretty much the same - lots of varying opinions online but it still amazes me just how invested people can be in this stuff.

An Australian forum I'm on has a thread that's been going for ages and there are supporters for both "sides" but when it comes down to it it's all just a bunch of opinions.

LanternGhost · 08/01/2023 04:37

I've never heard anyone talk about them in real life. I have one friend that likes TOWIE though.

Ericaequites · 08/01/2023 04:48

It has nothing to to do with being WASPy, but nice Americansdon’t talk about money, sex, or family business. I’m an American who thinks Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sussex have disgraced themselves and worked to discredit the Royal Family. King Charles III should instruct Parliament to remove their titles. They should not be invited to the Coronation. H & M should go back to their Fake house and stay well away from the spotlight. What sort of person names their son for a vapid comic character?

Endlesssummer2022 · 08/01/2023 04:53

How could there be a consensus in a nation of 300million? Are Americans a hive mind now?

Hopefully though they aren’t as hysterical as Daily Mail readers though. People reacting as though this was their own family falling out. Properly embarrassing.
